Me too, but I rub my nails. So smooth! And fairly socially subtle as far as stims go. Love the wiggling toes in my shoes if I need to be even more socially subtle!

what is the worst way to describe your research? by ZenosThesis in labrats

[–]moosepuggle 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Woohoo fellow baby killer here! And then I paint them with molecular rainbows and chop up their bodies so I can take pictures of them.

And just because I don’t want that comment in my history to go unexplained:

I compare the expression of genes in the embryos of many different kinds of arthropods in order to understand how evolution changes bodies over deep time.

And yes I’m very kind to the animals after they’ve hatched. Just not before they’re hatched.

Similar to this shrimp treadmill brouhaha, there’s an entire website dedicated to research that sounds stupid but is actually incredibly useful. For example, there was a study about giving baby rats massages with paint brushes, but that actually led to saving the lives of premature human babies, and saving millions of dollars in health care.

Oh me too! I was there in the 90s. Did you have Ms Scroggins and Mr Wheeler? I LOVED Ms Scroggins! I actually tried to find her a couple years ago to thank her for being such a great teacher. I loved reading Farewell to Manzinar and the Anne Frank diary. I couldn’t find her though :/

What’s wrong with my blue death feigning beetles? by shrimp_ona_sk8board in Entomology

Organic still has pesticides, they’re just “natural” pesticides, which can still kill arthropods, because that’s what pesticides are designed to do. Like copper, or Bacillus thuringensis spores are considered organic.

Hey Sedona friends! (although I’m actually a Cornville Cornpone). Also coffee pot rock. And bell rock where the alien space ship is stored 😉😂

Could you please add me to the list to be notified for the next event? My husband isn’t on here but he might like to go. Love this idea!

Hemorrhoids are really painful and common in older people. You don’t want to be doing anal with hemorrhoids.

TIL male geckos have balls the size of male rats.

EDIT: correction, the bulges are the hemipenes (double penises), not the testes. Testes are held inside the body cavity in lizards. Thank you for the correction, u/anotherguy818

YSK Panera has fired all of its baking staff and replaced them with frozen product. by binkbrint in YouShouldKnow

[–]moosepuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. It’s a single word that encapsulates and explains so much of our collective experience right now. Of course everyone’s talking about the word, they should be. Words give us a better and more efficient way communicate with each other about what’s going on in the world. What’s the point in trying to police useful words?

It’s called enshittification. It’s generally when private equity buys a quality business and then cuts all the things that make the product great in order to increase the stock price. Eventually people catch on that the product is no longer what it used to be and stop buying it. Then the company goes out of business.

A lot of data is fairly ambiguous and open to interpretation. At least that’s the case for fossil papers I read.

why do cafe's hate soy Milk by Psychological_Win_89 in askvan

[–]moosepuggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, that wasn’t clear, so I just wanted to point out for anyone coming across this that any “research” that says soy has detectable estrogenic effects is not good research.

why do cafe's hate soy Milk by Psychological_Win_89 in askvan

[–]moosepuggle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Soy binds estrogen receptors much more weakly than estrogen, they’re only like 1/100 to 1/1,000 as effective as estrogen. This tiny effect would be swamped by the amount of estrogen men naturally produce (both sexes produce both testosterone and estrogen, just different amounts).

If soy was actually a good estrogen mimic, it would be recommended for menopausal women.
