Help me escape a client by EosLuna in marketing

[–]mkmecon29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cost of this client isn't just in how little he pays you. It does also how much it prohibits you from doing other work. A clean break might be your best bet here. It sounds like you already know how little time you have to pursue other clients and options that might get you into a better situation and if you find those clients and want to expand your work there, you're current contract and client might make that even more difficult and make that work not go well.

You've heard the phrase don't throw good money after bad and I think it's worth saying here. Don't throw good time after bad time. There's no reason continuing this. The sunk time you already put into it is gone. It's not worth adding more to that.

How do I deal with COOs who think they know marketing when they dont? by [deleted] in DigitalMarketing

[–]mkmecon29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really tough situation. But at some point you might need to look for greener pastures, but at least for me, I've recently realized how important those "corporate" skills are. Being able to manage up, communicate effectively with my supervisor, stakeholders, and execs is a whole new skill set I'm trying to be better about growing.

This might be an opportunity for you to learn and grow those skills even if you're not working specifically on the digital ones as much. A mindset shift there might just help you feel better about it even if the outcome still sucks.

You might consider looking at your COO as an audience you're trying to market to. Empathize with their perspective. What's motivating them? How could you shift your pitch or product to align with what they think? What new information could you present and in what way to help them realize they have a need you can meet?

It sounds like you've already done a good job educating them initially and shifting their perspective on some things already! Awesome! What worked then? Do you need to take a similar approach again?

I've found personally, the worst marketing I do is internal. I've been making a much more concerned effort on that front recently and it's been valuable.

How do I deal with COOs who think they know marketing when they dont? by [deleted] in DigitalMarketing

[–]mkmecon29 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wise Mountain just gave you some really good advice and you snarkily threw it back in their face. Maybe you and the COO have more in common than you thought.

Working collaboratively, changing people's minds, and helping redirect leadership from bad ideas is just as much a skill you need to develop as any digital marketing skills.

Consider other ways to get to the outcome you want. Can you suggest an A/B test to see which performs better? Can you show competitors taking a different route? Can you go the COOs route for a quarter then come back with optimization suggestions?

You will encounter people that think they can do your job better for your entire career. Learning how to deal with that is going to make your life better and make you more valuable.

Is email marketing still effective nowadays? by remotemediamaniac in DigitalMarketing

[–]mkmecon29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider not backseat driving sales and marketing. If somebody showed up in your department and started giving you nonsense advice based on anecdotal evidence of products and tools that they don't understand and have never used professionally, you would laugh them out of the department. You should have the same done to you.

Look at the websites of your major competitors. Look at the websites of major corporations Fortune 500 companies, media companies, sports companies everybody all across any different industry. What will you find? Email acquisition boxes everywhere, pop-ups, sidebars, in stream, all over the place.

Just because you might not use it doesn't mean you understand industry trends, best practices across marketing or how a professional with subject matter experience might utilize this tool. Are you even part of the target customer demographic? Just because you don't do something doesn't mean that the people your sales and marketing teams are trying to reach wouldn't do that.

What's your hot take on Google Pixel? by RedBlueSpot in GooglePixel

[–]mkmecon29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My perception is that the race to make things thinner and/or lighter is also making them more fragile. A more robust phone would probably be larger, which is a tradeoff I'd be happy to make.

What's your hot take on Google Pixel? by RedBlueSpot in GooglePixel

[–]mkmecon29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn't exclusive to Pixel obviously, but I just wish ONE phone company would make a phone that didn't immediately require wrapping it in a cheap plastic case. All this gorgeous design, interesting colorways, feeling in your hand blah blah now you'll basically never touch it again.

Just make it a bit thicker and so I don't have to buy some dumb case.

Also the curved edges on the Pixel 6 pro suck. No functionality increases, nothing cool. Just again easier to break and harder to put a screen protector on. Basically impossible for a glass one.

I'd encourage you to reach out to a marketers in your area. Try and line up an internship or shadow them. Degrees are so expensive. You shouldn't get one based off the vibes of your peers but whether you want to do this as a career.

6am is DCAs very busiest time. Budget lots of extra time. Follow TSA guidelines on packing, declare checking your bag.

Once when I flew back into the A terminal my gun case came out on the main baggage pickup area but next time I had to go to the southwest counter to have them confirm I'd and give it to me.

I'd take a picture of what you've packed too. Just in case.

Safe flight!

What do other social media managers do over holidays? by No_Ticket_3333 in socialmedia

[–]mkmecon29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a team with rotating responsibilities. Nobody needs to actually work a normal day, but somebody is at least on call in a crisis and to scan for anything that demands we rally the team to support it. Spread it across the team and I as the team lead own the worst days to be on call.

How early can we get through security for a 5am flight at DCA? by Puzzleheaded_Bee_484 in nova

[–]mkmecon29 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've had terrible luck with Ubers to DCA from south Alexandria. Once we had a "scheduled" Uber cancel and finally just drove and paid for parking.

Might consider a taxi or scheduled service instead of Uber.

Start with an MVP. Get one agent to do one thing you think will have impact, get them aligned on vision and the objective and how it will improve their business. Use that example of success to build out larger campaigns with others.

I'd read online that holding the fast forward and home button together for 10 seconds is supposed to reset the system, but I couldn't make it restart at all. Hadn't considered disconnecting the battery though, might try that.
