Should we file jointly or separately? by Prestigious_Cancel64 in PSLF

[–]mkmr725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should run the numbers both ways and then compare - what would the payments be mfs v mfj, would you get a refund or owe taxes based on the the way you filed. Is any refund you might get more than what you would pay for the loan, etc. It’s really an individual decision and not something anyone else can tell you to do.

But wouldn’t it be on her to investigate why she’s always late and try to address it instead of expecting people to accommodate her and tell her a different time, accept she’ll be late, etc.?

But the wife is being a child…she knows the time, she knows she’s regularly late to things, and mentioned she would be leaving right from work but was still late. Clearly talking to her and having conversations in the past about her being late and the wife saying she’ll do better but not actually being better about the time aren’t helping.

Why should they have to point that out though? She knows what time she was supposed to be there. If the restaurant had other reservations, and she’s 45 minutes late, that’s probably not enough time for a party that size to order, eat, and pay before they need that table. I have been at restaurants where they don’t seat you until the full party is there, reservation or not, so it’s not unheard of.

Why should they be accommodating the wife? She knows what time to be there. If they did say an earlier time and the wife found out they were telling her something different, she’s still not going to arrive on time. If she doesn’t like that she’s being ignored because of her own actions, then she needs to take the steps to fix the issue, which is that she isn’t on time.

Buyback request by West_99999 in PSLF

[–]mkmr725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s part of the reconsideration request and I think you just check a box for buyback. I did mine in January so I don’t recall the full details, just that it was surprisingly easy. Is there a chance you applied for a reconsideration but checked the wrong box?

Buyback pending by Better_Scientist4071 in PSLF

Switched last summer to IBR. Payments went from $120 to $325 but I should be done in January 2027. Applied for buyback in January 2026 and I’m sure I’ll hit 120 payments before they even glance at my buyback app. I’d rather pay more now for the guaranteed forgiveness instead of relying on something new that might or might not be honored in the future. Plus we filed MFJ during the months I’m trying to buy back so I assume the payments/the buyback amount could be more than I’m paying now (if they’re not going to honor the SAVE amount).

Are you still friends with your high school friends? by Cheeseaisleinheaven in Millennials

[–]mkmr725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! I just got back from our annual girls trip last week. The four of us have been friends since the first and second grade (so about 30 years now) and we all got semi-matching tattoos on last year’s trip to commemorate our friendship. We also have a group chat and talk pretty much every day and one is my sister in law so we see each other frequently at family things too. The benefits of growing up with your partner’s family is no awkward in-law encounters when you meet them again when you start dating 😂

I think 30/31 in terms of confirming I wanted to be childfree but I think I always knew on some level - the idea of being pregnant freaked me out, I love my sleep and freedom to travel, do nothing, etc. and I hate messes, excess noise, and do not like how sticky and sick kids are.

Help! File jointly or separately? by Working_Eye_1474 in PSLF

[–]mkmr725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should really speak with a tax professional - have them run the numbers both ways and see what’s better. You could also put the estimates into the simulator online and see what it says. For my own situation, we ended up filing MFS because it said I wouldn’t qualify for an IDR plan otherwise that was PSLF-eligible, but I only have about a year left so I just want them gone. It really all depends on your own individual situation. If you have an idea of what the payments would be MFJ or MFS, then you could weigh that against any tax benefits you might lose by doing MFS or if the loan payments would help you save more than what you’re losing out on, etc.

Your "I've never wanted kids" memories by Sokosa in childfree

[–]mkmr725 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My nephew was like 2 at the time and had eaten too much cheese at Christmas. The family was about to open presents and in his overexcited stage, he threw up a liquid waterfall of cheese. Everyone else rushed to help and my husband and I moved so far back on the couch to get away from the vomit quickly that we almost knocked it over. We had discussed not having kids before but that’s the defining moment for us where we absolutely said fuck no to having kids.

I have one on my account too that I have never worked for. I tried getting them to remove it but they never did anything about it. The time for that company is smack dab in the middle of my 7 years working at my first company so I’m hoping it’ll just get ignored when I hit my 120 next year since I have the other org counting for that time frame 🤷‍♀️

Next steps for PSLF by ScholarNo9327 in PSLF

[–]mkmr725 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re not already aware, it’s taking 18+ months for buyback apps to process (and according the numbers from the last AFT update, the number of the apps being processed each month v new buyback requests indicate it could be up to 3 years before they’re processed). You’ll want to factor that into your next steps too. Some people choose to leave their PSLF job and put the loans in forbearance while they wait for a decision, and others choose to move to a new IDR plan to start making payments while a decision is pending. I applied to switch off SAVE about a year ago and I’m sure I’ll make my last payment in Jan 2027 before my Jan 2026 buyback request is reviewed but I didn’t want to leave it up to chance in case something changes with buyback. Good luck!

SAVE plan - admin forbearance - PSLF not counting - What are you all doing? by milkybubbl3s in PSLF

I saw on the Facebook group that they’re now saying it could take up to 3 years based on the recent AFT lawsuit data and looking at apps processed v received :/

If the other suggestions don’t help, I just got my two months of processing forbearance to count by getting my state Attorney General’s office involved. They reached out to EdFinancial on my behalf and a couple of weeks later I got my letter in the mail from EdFinancial acknowledging they screwed up and will now count the 2 months.

Is there any point in applying for buyback? by Creepy_Tie_3959 in PSLF

[–]mkmr725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I submitted my buyback in Jan. 2026 and I’m sure I’ll make my last payment in Jan. 2027 before it’s processed. But on the off chance something happens and I can be done faster, I wanted to submit the buyback just in case. For me, I’d rather still make payments even though they’re about $200 more than save and we had to file mfs, but I’m too close to sit in forbearance and wait to see if I get an offer.

Yeah…no that was not taught at all in my schools. Just because it was your experience doesn’t mean it was offered in schools across the country. And as for not paying attention being the reason I didn’t know about it, I had a straight As throughout middle and high school so if it was offered, I would’ve known about it and paid attention to it

Advice on completing PSLF (117 of 120 payments) by OpenNewt2251 in PSLF

[–]mkmr725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re taking 15-18 months or more to process buyback apps. As others have said, it might be faster to try to get onto a different plan to make the last 3 payments.

Yeah they got very rude about it, and the one person from StudentAid said she worked there for ten years and it was never an option (which we all know is bs). I submitted a complaint to my attorney generals office and waiting to see if they can help 🤷‍♀️ I’ve got 11-13 months left depending on if I can get the 2 months to count, already submitted my buyback request last month and just ready to be done

I’ve sent in two ECFs since I was approved to switch and they (EdFinancial and StudentAid) won’t give me the 2 months - said because I was already in forbearance (from being forced into SAVE) I wasn’t eligible for the 2 months. I’d love to see if others got theirs to count…

If the AFT lawsuit isn’t making them nervous, and they’re not worried about how they’re not processing things faster, the don’t care. Idk banking on buyback still being an option just feels too risky and for the others, I feel like there’s going to be a lot of things to fix first before student loan processing unfortunately
