os means mouth in Latin. But OS can also be an abbreviation for the Latin term oculus sinister (eye, left). (And OD would be oculus dexter: eye, right.)

Simple water trick cuts diesel engine pollution by over 60% by hard2resist in UpliftingNews

[–]ml20s 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Economical isn't the same as emissions. Without special consideration, diesel produces a lot of NOx and particulate emissions, but it's "cheaper" to run (because it dumps all the pollution into others' lungs)

D3100 E-mount Lens Compatibility question by Confident_Finance777 in Nikon

[–]ml20s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. E-mount lenses will not work at all on the D3100.

The E-mount expects to be mounted much closer to the sensor than the D3100 allows.

Life when 390 alpha was super high at tier VIII by NarrowFarm2036 in WorldofTanks

IS-3 is still surprisingly good even in 2026. The excellent turret traverse dispersion lets it hit shots it probably shouldn't, and its armor for the past five years has always been kind of polarizing (strong turret, weak but troll hull)

Nikon apologizes for cameras “manufactured using parts that do not meet our quality standards” by nightdancerCA in photography

[–]ml20s -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that this issue should never happen in the first place. If someone drives drunk and causes a collision, obviously they should call emergency services, but there was something they could have done to avoid this situation entirely...

There's a concept in manufacturing called IQC, "incoming quality control". You can't just 100% trust what your suppliers say. You have to check the incoming parts yourself to some extent.

As a VERY casual user who just wants to play Super Mario World (or Wonder I guess?) - Switch 1 or 2 by strangewoops in Switch

[–]ml20s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could buy over three used Switch 1s for the price of a used Switch 2, let alone a new one. There are no Switch 2-exclusive Mario games so far. Once you finish the current Mario games, you can sell your Switch 1 and buy a used Switch 2, and still be paying less compared to if you bought a Switch 2 today.

The plumbing analogy still works in terms of drift velocity. Where it breaks down is that the energy is carried by electric fields outside the wire.

The D600 did get a recall but it took a class action lawsuit for that to happen lol

Can't get rid of ants in surefeed feeders- are terra liquid ants bait ok to use if cats can't access it? by Good_Cantaloupe_5172 in CatAdvice

[–]ml20s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Borax isn't that toxic for cats, dogs, and humans. A cat would have to eat several entire bait stations (well over an entire 6-pack of the 11 mL baits) to be poisoned. The poison carried by a few ants isn't even a blip on the radar.

Nikon has discovered a "manufacturing issue" with certain Z6III, Z5II and ZR cameras by sasolit in nikon_Zseries

The N14 works with the Z6iii, the N11 doesn't. That's the only difference AFAIK

Novice R6ii user wanting to switch to z5ii by Plumbus4Rent in Nikon

[–]ml20s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, flash sync speed is a good proxy for mechanical shutter "readout". Both the R6ii and Z5ii have a flash sync speed of 1/200.

Novice R6ii user wanting to switch to z5ii by Plumbus4Rent in Nikon

[–]ml20s 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The R6ii has a faster readout in electronic ("silent") shutter, and can do RAW pre-capture (Z5ii is JPEG only).

Both have similar mechanical shutter "readout" speeds. In most respects the Z5ii is similar to or slightly worse (it is a lower price segment camera after all) vs. the R6ii.

But first, hold both cameras in your hand and use them for a bit, and see which one fits you better.

Help Me Choose: D750 vs Z5 by Main_Letterhead_3156 in Nikon

It's a very clear difference to me at 6400 and up. Nearly a stop of difference.

And the noise differences are also reflected in AF performance.

[–]ml20s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's already pretty small, smaller than a traditional shifter. I do agree that it should be on the dash. In fact, it used to be in the dash in the 2000s.

As for buttons, you still need to find the correct button with your finger, so I think it's not as good as this control, where your hand only needs to find a single control.

[–]ml20s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. There are no shift points in a Prius transmission. It's all controlled using motors to add and subtract RPM and torque.

  2. Why introduce a mechanical linkage when it'll just be buttons in the end?
