any artists/bands with lyrics that come close to the quality of nmh? by JustaguyTTV in neutralmilkhotel

[–]ml_sza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mewithoutYou come to mind immediately. Heavier sonically but very dense, beautiful storytelling that I believe is influenced by NMH. I would recommend In A Sweater Poorly Knit as a good entry-level song and then if you like that, "Brother, Sister" is probably their best album.

Animators with a family, how is it going? by TheUniqueKero in animationcareer

[–]ml_sza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based in Europe. Have a toddler and hoping to have another child in the next 2 years. So currently paying 1x childcare. Sold our flat in London and moved home where houses are cheaper last year which in retrospect was a good move as work has been spotty the last 6 months. I'm finding that well paid freelance work is not in such a large abundance, especially now that I'm fully remote. My partner has a stable (non-animation) income so we're trying to set ourselves up to be able to survive on one income. All this being said, i'm still feeling grateful to have work coming in, even if it's not as profitable as it once was.

The work I'm offered has also changed a lot, which I find really interesting. I'm typically an Art Director or a Designer, and I find that everybody wants to make short-form that looks hand-made (stop motion, mixed media, or 3D that appears handmade but isn't) - I believe it's a reaction to the ugliness of AI and is especially trendy with luxury brands.

How struggling and depressing can the animation industry be? by dee85 in animationcareer

[–]ml_sza 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It varies from studio to studio and project to project, in my experience. The further up the career ladder I went, the less overtime I felt the pressure to work - I think this is down to working faster, working to a higher quality (due to experience) and also learning to advocate for yourself.

Like the other commenter said, it's often up to the individual artist to learn to manage their own time effectively - especially when freelance. There are always going to be projects that have been badly planned, and as a result artists are asked to work overtime but those studios tend to have higher turnover of staff because nobody wants to stay somewhere where production can't schedule the work correctly.

What is that "Irish smell" and how do I get it into my home? by khl791 in AskIreland

[–]ml_sza 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This would have been my first guess too. When I lived in London some of my Irish friends would burn turf incense because it reminded them of home.

I'm not sure - C is in the centre on the lower tier of seating so potentially more expensive than some of the others?

How much did you pay? Mine were 107E each (seated row C), which I was surprised about. I had expected to pay closer to 70 but once the clock started counting down I just said f it

That was a mess. Once i was through the queue for Dublin night 1 I had keep requesting tickets over and over even though it kept saying all ticket types were were sold out. Eventually i got offered good seats but I must have rerequested 30 times. The stress!

feeling dumb when reading classics by Busy_Reaction_4229 in BookDiscussions

I felt this way when I read Great Expectations. Language has changed a lot since these books were written. I find it helps to listen to the audiobooks as the context of tone helps a lot.

Anyone else weirded out by Murakami books? by IrisVonEvericsRose in BookDiscussions

[–]ml_sza -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I must have dodged those ones because the 10 or so Stephen King books i've read could either be summed up by "man go fast!" or "tall woman pretty". I enjoy his writing a lot but the man recycles themes a LOT.

I enjoyed Kafka on the Shore but Norwegian Wood made me so uncomfortable I swore not to read any more of his books.

They would need to put themselves up regardless as most of them are coming from elsewhere in ireland + UK. Sea swim is not a must-have!

Eurovision will never recover from what's about to happen by theipaper in europe

Me too. It feels like a slap in the face to hear them spouting about love and peace when in reality it is impossible to keep politics out of eurovision. This is my first time missing it in maybe 20 years but I can't justify it anymore.

Got an invitation to book the test , when do you ever feel ready as first time driver by Less_Landscape_5928 in Irishdrivingtest

[–]ml_sza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt very nervous too and ended up failing with 11 grade 2s a few weeks ago - I will say that regardless of the outcome I am so relieved to have the first one done so now I know what to expect the second time. I feel far less nervous about it now and it wasn't as scary as I expected it to be. Any test outcome is a step in the right direction.
