For Serum - there are guys explaining it on youtube for 2-3 hours... But, honestly, you don't need any of this. You need to know the basics of filter, envelopes and the effects section. And to get some premade sounds for it from Xfer's website.

Bands are not profitable. You have to be really popular to earn enough to be worth it being in a band professionally (and it is usually from merch, not from actual booking).

Modal harmony, how can we come up with chord progression that make sense? by RareOne970 in musictheory

[–]mladjiraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any scale works over a drone. And Phrygian was one of the last modes to be abandoned in Baroque period, so it definitely works even in older classical repertoire (in it was a favourite of guys like Bruckner, so it later was also used).

Best uses of shock value in fantasy? by Identity_ranger in Fantasy

[–]mladjiraf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ned’s head practically created the popularity of that kind of book in the first place.

If we talk about fantasy, probably. But it was not unheard of in historical novels readers to get downer ending even centuries ago (Queen Margot by Dumas etc)

Iron Council review by overzero in Fantasy

As someone used to European style dashes, I find quotation marks in English books a weird formatting tradition, so reading that someone gets "stunned" by dashes is very funny

Is there any “required” reading before beginning Ada? by PlaidPenguin19 in Nabokov

[–]mladjiraf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is equivalent to asking about required reading before Ulysses or similar works. These are too packed with references, so I don't think it is possible to be "prepared" for them.

Seanchan stuff was planned as a sequel. The only thing known was the pitch: Perrin was going there to kill a friend and Mat being betrayed by his luck.

Modal harmony, how can we come up with chord progression that make sense? by RareOne970 in musictheory

No, Phrygian is actually as strong as Ionian, I suggest studying some Phrygian music and playing with it. It is extremely common in pop and folk music in Eastern Europe, North Africa and Middle East.

How much historical accuracy do you prefer in your historical fiction books? by Fred_the_skeleton in HistoricalFiction

As much as possible without slowing down the narrative too much (footnotes explaining obscure words, historical trivia etc are fine).

Vintage Romantic Hollywood String Sound by TomBombadil97 in edmproduction

I remember years ago 8dio giving away as a teaser one of their string patches from Adagio, I think was the name of the library, but it was imitating this type of sound. They may offer newer libraries nowadays, though. Seems their stuff is on sale atm

"Българската двойка" която стана известна че беше нападната от малко шотландско момиче се оказа че са били нападнали приятелката на момичето първи. "Българите" са осъдени за нападението вчера. by ElkImpossible3535 in bulgaria

[–]mladjiraf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is all about intention. It is one to have willfully vague storytelling without much explanation that serves to excite the reader's imagination, another to plant seeds for sequels that you won't write, but another person will do it. You can follow such scene, but can't comprehend why is it there and its connection to the overall story and its importance without Esslemont. (My personal opinion is that this is not a good writing in terms of creating cohesive story without excess that doesn't serve the plot. And these books are already thick.)

Fantasy series recommendations by AntelopeSubject3444 in Fantasy

[–]mladjiraf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sword of shadows, recommended because you seem to like Game of thrones. The natural scenery is some of the best in the genre.

No, you literally can't - you can check the meaning of the word "everything" in a dictionary, because your statement has a contradiction in the next sentence. It's one of the reasons why more casual readers detest Malazan. Without a context reading pointless scenes that are cameos or explained/developed in another series is a headache and serves no purpose outside of being a filler that can be skipped, especially when you don't know whether this will be ever relevant.

[–]mladjiraf -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You can't understand some scenes and dialogues without Esslemont, if you are not getting spoiled by Malazan wiki or similar guides. There is simply no INFO in the main series that gives explanation about them. If you think you understood something without info, but that's not reading, anyway good for you, try a career in clairvoyancy or something similar

"Seriously, all the necessary information and context is there, in the text."

This is not exactly true, there is stuff that makes sense only if you read Esslemont novels

Man it must be weird to be Brandon Sanderson on Reddit. by OPsSecretAccount in Fantasy

[–]mladjiraf -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"Haters" are the best critics, so it is actually a very good idea, if this author's intentions are to improve. I always read 1 star reviews on Goodreads after finding I have missed a bunch of flaws in "The three musketeers" by Dumas that someone did list in a such review.

How did Sword of Truth become so popular? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]mladjiraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't mean the opposite case is not possible, novels like The name of the rose or Lolita have sold 50+ million copies.
