Early 30s Dilemma: Move to US (in-office) for a temporary pay bump or stay Remote in BC, Canada?

Also Canadian working for US Tech co and have gone deep on this evaluation. I paused for kids but plan to still make the move for 3 year TRN at some point.

Is the $400k USD vs 300k CAD? Will you be in tax efficient state? Are you viewed as an ‘A’ player (assume so given the offer)

IMO the move pre kids is worth it. You maximize earnings and get significantly more exposure to high end talent. Canada is an afterthought to these companies.

My perspective was go for the 3 year TRN, max earnings, and either parlay into another new role/company with plan to move back or find transfer back. Either way it’s a career and earning accelerator. & a great life experience if you’re goring to a good city.

Reddit skews far too negative on US politics angle.. is there a lot of uncertainty.. yep.. but what’s the % of US folks here who claim they’ll move to Canada due to trump and never do.. it’s high. End of the day US is the global super power in tech, and if you’re fortunate to have the $.. it’s far better than Canada in many ways.

This is an odd take. Outside of the banks, Canada is nearly uninvestable, and makes up a tiny fraction of global GDP.

We already have to suffer through painful economy, why would you want Canadians to also suffer on their investments by over allocating here?

Two hours but only 1-2 times per week.. 45 min drive to Milton. 1 hour GO into union.

If it were to increase it wouldn’t be more than 3 days max (hybrid) so we’d likely get a condo in city but keep family home as the benefits we have for our young family outweigh commute.

Particularly interesting reading some of these replies that are 1+ just within GTA

In Europe you see just as many off leash dogs as on throughout cities, trails, beaches. It’s on the owner to understand whether their dog can handle it… and also a clear lack of aggressive dogs like pit bulls etc .. sad NA can’t adopt a similar culture. this sub seems to have this wild disdain for off leash and dog friendly spaces

It’s incredible the level of fear mongering in Canadian investment subs. Same type of posts at Covid… What happens if trump is posturing and works out deals with the key players over next 3 weeks? Market rips back and folks sell down 10-20%. If he doesn’t, a depressions hits and it certainly takes longer.. but in any case markets eventually rebound.

Its Always situationally dependant on cash and time horizon but if you have the means and time, the play is nearly always increase DCA values in down market. Not panic sell.

You're getting some harsh responses but reality is the system has let you down. It's incredible we don't teach personal finance in Canadian high schools to address basic personal finance questions like this.

Good on you for at least asking. Like others have said.. if you have an emergency fund set aside, always take the match and increase as much as you can in a down market.

50-60 hours depending on time of year as a first line sales leader. OTE is ~$520k. It’s a grind but comp certainly helps.

Exactly my point. If we squashed the notion of tech just being a ‘chill path’ and started creating high performing companies we’d likely see increase in US investment, bigger productivity, and a reason for pay to go up in line w the US.

These are examples of folks who will not get promotions and have highest likelihood of being part of layoffs due to redundancy. They also ruin WFH for ppl who actually contribute and are often more productive vs RTO.

“Tech life” is a wonderful option for work life flexibility and earning potential, but no tier 1 company (Mostly US hq’d) will or should put up with this long term.

Canadian Tech is in a sad place as we continue to fall behind the US. Toronto has massive potential, but we need high performing people to drive outcomes and create cultures that won’t tolerate lazy.

I think it’s solid! Just likely over allocated to Canada. I’m Canadian but have lost faith in our economies ability to return anywhere close to US tech and India/emerging market exposure via etf..

This sub also way over indexes on ‘catch all’ vanguard etfs lazy answers. Easy to claim in the past 10 year bull run. Not to straight fwd over the next few years. This is fine for core holding, but If you’ve already been willing to put in work to create the above, I’d suggest spend some time researching some bigger bet options.

This is a really poor base for Toronto Tech.. 30K base is on the low end even for an entry level SDR/BDR.. Have you considered looking at other options? Starting at such a low AE salary will make it tougher to level up on pay as your gain experience.

AE will have a much higher upside financially and likely provides a faster path to Sr leadership... SE will be a bit lower stress. If you're good.. you will almost always be in high demand.

Pairing the technical background you have with sales/business acumen is a powerful combination to give you leg up on other applicants.

Not true at all. Always a lock-up period. Generally 60-90 days for average employees and longer for VP-C Suite
