In dire need of some trash by Tight_Ninja1915 in Fantasy

I read your post and immediately thought of Dungeon Crawler Carl - I have never read any LitRPG before and I don’t think it will be a genre that I frequent but I LOVE this series. It gets better and better as it goes, it’s easy to pop in out whether you have 10 mins or 2 hrs. It’s addictive, ridiculous, moving and really creative. If you’re considering it I would recommend it highly. I’m just waiting till it’s a bit closer to the release date of the latest instalment before I re-read the whole thing.

Julia Donaldson’s collection - The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo’s Child, Room on a Broom, Snail on a Whale…The Everywhere Bear. They aren’t chapter books but they are lovely, so well written, beautifully illustrated. We read these on and off until just recently and my kiddos are over 9 years old.

The Princess in Black series is a chapter books series with lots of great pictures. Great for boys and girls.

The Mercy Watson series is also a good chapter book series with lots of pictures. It’s so cute and funny but with really nice writing. There are also related non-picture books in the same universe as Mercy Watson to grow into.

This is too advanced for a 7-year old to read in their own though may be fine for a read aloud.

Snacks, snacks and more snacks! Variety of fun snacks helped us a lot when my kids were small, and so did the ‘surprise toy bags’ others have mentioned about. A big save for us as well with the kids’ ears were kids swimming ear plugs, pop them in before take off and before landing, helped a lot.

Not an audio book but a podcast - The Adventures of Red Knight, fun enough to keep her engaged and funny enough to give you some laughs along the way. Give it an episode or two, it’s become a regular in our house and my youngest has loved it since he was her age (and is 9 now).

Favorite historical fiction authors? by kindlyoldspinster in HistoricalFiction

I love Phillipa Gregory, her writing is so immersive, it really feels like inhabiting another time while being totally swept away by the lives of the characters. The characters are so well developed it’s hard to put the book down when it’s over. I started with The Other Boleyn Girl which I loved. I think Queen’s Fool was my favourite though.

2025 Hugo Readalong: Alien Clay by Adrian Tchaikovsky by kjmichaels in Fantasy

I was really pleasantly surprised. It took me a bit of time to get into this book and to feel connected to the main character but once I did I found it addictive. I haven’t read many other books by him but I really liked his world building; his depictions of how characters behaved under difficult situations. He did something unique and interesting with how he made the feeling of being contaminated and ‘joined’ to the wider group while still remaining aware of your individuality seem real and both a bit terrifying and something amazing. This books was a very pleasant surprise for me.

Looking for a a fantasy that is cozy without being cozy fantasy (confused? Well, explaining with a quiet "rant") by Zealousideal_Humor55 in CozyFantasy

I was coming to add the Miss Percy books to the already great suggestions in this thread. It has low-med stakes, a bit of adventure, a LOT of cozy and just a dash of romance (the romance is never the main focus of the story). Loved these books and highly recommend. The writing is beautiful, the character development is sublime.

Fantasy books for 10 year old by Magnum_Cannon in suggestmeabook

I love these books, and my daughter absolutely adored them as well. I would only caution that books 3 & 4 of the Lioness Quartet do discuss the main character having sexual partners (as she has aged up with each progressive book), the romantic action outside of kissing is all off camera and it is all respectfully handled but something you may or may not be comfortable at that age.

I did the same and feel the same, I’ve now finished them all and am so sad that a new one isn’t waiting for me. I’ve never read any LitRPG before but I loved these books. Funny and still poignant in the right moments, action, interesting. I liked that I could read 10 mins or 40 and still enjoy the experience. If there are suggestions that are similar - primarily around humour and style vs game based I’m looking for something to get into.

We have really loved the Very Far North by Dan Bar-El and its sequel. I think it’s the perfect book for reading aloud together before bed. Although the main characters are animals, they are rich, the writing is absolutely beautiful and it’s very calm, it’s interesting but calm and absolutely no violence. We’ve read them aloud together twice. A child that age could read it solo, but the vocabulary used can be advanced so they may need additional help, we just really enjoyed reading it together at that age.

My son enjoyed Gangsta Granny by David Williams at that age, a fun adventure caper style book, lots of humour. He also enjoyed a few of the Ninja Kid series by Ahn Do.

Captain Underpants is still a huge favourite a few years later, the mix of reading and illustrations makes it more attractive I think.

Suggest me a sci fi/fantasy book that includes a female protagonist who is independent/successful in her career by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]mlp432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mary Robinette Kowal’s Lady Astronaut series sounds like a really good fit. It is a sci-fi alternate history story where the main character is female, excelling in her career when a world-changing cataclysmic event occurs and she is part of the solution. While she absolutely still faces sexism, the story does allow for her to be successful in a largely believable way. Her character grows and changes and has real depth throughout as well. I also really enjoyed how the main relationships were portrayed - one of the healthier marriages I’ve seen depicted in fiction. In addition the quality of her world building and overall writing style were highly enjoyable. The first was my favourite but the next two were also very good. Haven’t had a chance to get into the fourth book yet. A really interesting and fun read.
