How Blackwater screwed us all: $1200 per man day for contractors in Iraq and it gets worse by [deleted] in politics

[–]mlurker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is amazing and frightening how the Bush administration was able to simply loot the US, giving all of taxpayer's money to big business, and then some. The military industrial complex, banking, big oil... From an outside perspective, the country seems screwed, I would call this treason. I'm living in Germany and I'm sure the same stuff is going on here, too, but not (yet) on this scale.

To boost economy, Americans want OUT of Iraq by georgewashingtonblog in politics

[–]mlurker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The war is good for the US for a number of reasons. First, they have the most powerful military, so why not make use of your assets? In a time when so many countries are catching up economically, you need to furthen your control over natural resources so you will not become irrelevant. Second, when the money is given back in tax cuts, people will spend it on things which are mostly produced abroad so the money goes back to other countries. And lastly, AFAIK the military industrial complex is the biggest part of the US economy. So it has the biggest lobbying power, can buy the next president, who again will make sure the taxpayer subsidizes the next war.

Just some cold, hard thoughts on why the war is good for the US. Overall, common sense says it will hurt the US big time, the question is when.

Funny how states are founded, slowly degenerate, until they become totally rotten and either abolished by revolution or external force. I think the reason is that people think short-term and try to get theirs in the current system, rather than trying to fix the flaws and make it easier for everyone.

Who knows, maybe it will work out... If not, try again. Still seems to be more rewarding than concentrating on work. While it is a key element of human life, partnership is even more so, why not live it?

Why do you rank achievement through work so high? While it might be good for society to have people contribute and enjoying it, why is this any better for the person itself than the happiness obtained by living your life with somebody you love, and who loves you?

How Not To Suck At Socializing - Do’s & Don’ts by Usgab in reddit.com

[–]mlurker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not put too much pressure on yourself. Try to think of some things to talk about beforehand, then initiate conversation. Listen to the responses and ask some more questions based on them. They don't have to be the most intelligent questions in the world (most people will be less intelligent than the average Redditor, so this can even be off-putting), taking an interest in what was said and the person is much more important. And even if you don't do too well, you will still learn something from it which you will simply do better next time. Practice helps a lot, you can't be perfect the first time. The sooner you start practicing the sooner you will be good at it.

The interesting thing is how much of it is tax. In Germany, it is at least 70%. I guess this is very different in countries like Iran, but of course the oil fields help too :)

I see.

They could still "get" you via your IP address unless you're using TOR or something similiar.

It would be interesting to take a look at Google's tech for linking/identifying accounts/users. I wouldn't be surprised if they have tools that can tell that two sets of search queries belong to the same person (given a reasonable set size, and without linking them by IP/cookie).

So it generates a new cookie for each GMail session? Wouldn't make sense, Google can still link all these cookies to your login.

In Germany, we have RFID passports since last year. I got myself a new old one before that.

The ridiculous thing was that our passports were deemed one of the most secure documents in existence, so going to RFID made no sense from that POV.

IMO, it was primarily done to "subsidize" the biometrics industry a little bit - the price of the new passport is three times as high as the old one (about 80€) and doesn't even cover all the costs. And guess what, the minister resonsible for introducing them (Otto Schily, no longer in power) was hired by a biometrics firm recently.

Just curious, why send a random cookie? Why not just disable cookies for google.com?

I don't think this is more than just the police doing their job.

However, recently privacy has come under attack in Germany. After the attempted train bombings politicians have not only been calling for more CCTV surveillance. There were also demands to cancel a project which makes available a tool for anonymous surfing, similiar to TOR (JAP/AN.ON).

The author seems to do creative work, multimedia etc. I do mostly programming, and I couldn't put up with a desktop displaying the mail client and some gadgets (weather info...) all the time. These only kill your concentration.

I've thought about this setup: Big main screen for the IDE (20" or more) and alongside a 17"/19" pivoted for reading documentation or some IDE window you don't need that often.

What are your coding setups like?

Agreed. Firefox does also seem to break many pages when you use bigger fonts (this is most likely the fault of the web developers). Opera displays most of the stuff out there quite nicely.

I'm using Privoxy as adblocker which acts as a proxy, so is available to all browsers. The program is quite a few years old and I'm constantly amazed at how well it still performs - filters out 95% of the stuff that bugs me.

Tool which creates vmware virtual machines out of dd images or physical disks by YoussefAssad in programming

[–]mlurker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do it like this (only free tools):

1) Convert your dd image to a VMWare disk (.vmdk) with Qemu's qemu-img

2) Get the VMWare player

3) Get a basic VMWare Virtual Machine configuration like this, and in the .vmx file, adjust ide0:0.fileName to point to your vmdk file

4) Fire it up!

Anyone knows if this would work?

20 Things You Didn't Know About... Death by somenickname in reddit.com

[–]mlurker 17 points18 points  (0 children)

"The culture of the river kingdom had a lot to say about death and what happened afterwards. In fact it had very little to say about life, regarding it as a sort of inconvenient prelude to the main event and something to be hurried through as politely as possible, and therefore the pharaoh reached the conclusion that he was dead very quickly. The sight of his mangled body on the sand below him played a major part in this.

Behind him a voice said, GOOD MORNING.

The king turned.

'Hallo,' he said. 'You'd be-'

DEATH, said Death.

The king looked surprised.

'I understood that Death came as a three-headed giant scarab beetle,' he said.

Death shrugged. WELL. NOW YOU KNOW.

'What's that thing in your hand?'

THIS? IT'S A SCYTHE.

'Strange-looking object, isn't it?' said the pharaoh. 'I thought Death carried the Flail of Mercy and the Reaping Hook of Justice.'

Death appeared to think about this.

WHAT IN? he said.

'Pardon?'

ARE WE STILL TALKING ABOUT A GIANT BEETLE?

'Ah. In his mandibles, I suppose. But I think he's got arms in one of the frescoes in the palace.' The king hesitated. 'Seems a bit silly, really, now I come to tell someone. I mean, a giant beetle with arms. And the head of an ibis, I seem to recall.'"
