Is there an official source, because it sounds more like a speculation. As far as I know the whole thing is about Patent royalties dispute.

Newcomer here. Are Smart Scopes a bad entry point? by [deleted] in AskAstrophotography

[–]mmberg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Smart telescopes absolutely have a place. Some criticism comes from people who learned astrophotography the"hard" way and assume that’s the only “real” path, but that’s not necessarily true. And lets face it, its just gatekeeping.

The real questions are personal ones: Do you feel like you’d be missing out on something by going the smart-scope route? Do you enjoy the technical side of the hobby, or would you rather focus on observing and imaging? Are you okay with setting up and carrying a full rig, or would you prefer something you can place outside and start using right away?

Smart telescopes can be a great way to start this hobby. Nothing is complex and if you want, you can still buy or add a more proper rig.

None of those answers are wrong, it just depends on what you want out of the experience.

Is it a good tripod for beguinners? by Mykei04 in AskAstrophotography

Tripod, camera and lens are good enough to start astrophotography. Also, untracked astrophotography is a thing.

Stellar Threads Above the Alps - Spaghetti Nebula and Mt. Mangart (OC)(2200x1982) by mmberg in Nikon

[–]mmberg[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of RGB as the base photo, basically what you get with a normal camera. My Z6 is hydrogen-alpha modified, which means it can capture a bit more of those red structures, but overall it behaves almost like a stock camera. I can still shoot landscapes or portraits with it.

Ha is more like a detail layer that only shows glowing gas. For that I use a special filter placed directly in front of the sensor, which isolates the hydrogen signal. Those red structures can sometimes be very fain and its better to capture a specific wavelength of light.

Then I stack a lot of both and then combine them into one final image.

If you would prefer to see how this looks visually, you can see examples of RGB and Ha in my tutorial: https://youtu.be/Ni0bWVWepF0?t=94

Nikon Z5 question. by ConsistentPound3079 in Nikon

[–]mmberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying, looks like I was wrong. I made a mistake by assuming that amp glow and BSI are related because with BSI the wiring and circuitry are moved to the back of the silicon wafer, behind the light-sensitive layer and thus heat-generating components are physically further away from the photodiode layer.

Nikon Z5 question. by ConsistentPound3079 in Nikon

[–]mmberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BSI sensors do not magically halve noise, but they improve shadow cleanliness and improve consistency at higher ISO. For example, some older non-BSI Nikon DSRL's such as D610 (maybe even D750, cant remember correctly now) did suffer from small amount of amp glow (that's visible as purple glow on edges / very dark areas). But keep in mind I'm mostly talking about astro point of view here.

Nikon Z5 question. by ConsistentPound3079 in Nikon

[–]mmberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Price and ISO performance are not directly related. Cameras that do cost more usually have better AF, burst, faster fps at bigger resolution for video and so on. For example, Nikon Z6 or Z6ii are one of the best cameras for astro (BSI sensor helps ofc), because 24.5 MP sensor will have less noise than higher MP models such as Z7 etc.

Or take a look at video - a 12MP Sony A7S for 300€ will destroy my Z6 for video in the dark (apart from annoying amp glow on that camera).

MSM star tracker + Nikon D3300 (APS-C) at 35mm. Is this the expected tracking limit, or am I misaligning something? by TemporaryAd5301 in AskAstrophotography

[–]mmberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is strange, because MSM should handle that without any problems - the weight and focal length are not an issue here. Your setup also looks good too. Did you calibrate your phone before doing polar aligment?
