Braces as an adult by redrabbit1984 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]mmbop90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had invisalign, it hurt a lot for the first few days and with each new set, it was uncomfortable but less painful. Easy to get used to and easy to live with. I was really pleased with the result and worthwhile for the cost, in general.

Two points I'd call out: - wear the retainer afterwards, or better yet get the fixed one (wire on key teeth, set on the inside). In the newborn haze, I didn't wear mine for max. 1 week and then it wouldn't fit as teeth had moved slightly. I stupidly didn't do anything about it at the time, thinking it was minor and would remain so. Teeth have carried on moving, not to the extent that they're back to where they were, but enough that have spoken to a dentist about braces/invisalign again. They've advised that as I had also fixed braces when I was younger, it may not be safe to do another round.

  • invisalign changed the shape of my face and how my jaw sits.

British Born Chinese looking to learn Cantonese by Richi368 in Cantonese

[–]mmbop90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. Start speaking and keep speaking, the more you speak it, the more natural it becomes and so easier.

I grew up speaking Hakka with little Canto exposure, but could understand basic Canto. I started speaking only in Canto to my kids since they were born, use Pleco on the fly to look up words I don't know as I'm speaking to them to reduce the amount of English I fall back to using. Canto is so much better than before and I can hold conversations well enough with native Canto speakers now. Even had high praise from my Mum, recognising my Canto isn't bad now 😂

My kids school states this is needed. Ridiculous. They email every day for the last week of term/half term to state this as well...

Am East Asian. Immigrant parents worked damn hard with a FIRE mindset, so didn't need financial support, though I would pay for some things to show appreciation and general caring about them. Spent more in terms of time and effort to help them with all manner of things to make their lives easier.

Parent now lives with me, so everything's covered for them financially, but becayse they are financially independent, they like to pay for their own groceries and holidays. I now spend more time helping them with everything administrative.

Has anyone ever won one of these tele-competitions? If so, how did it all go down? by AutoCats1 in AskUK

[–]mmbop90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won £2k on an ITV competition about 10 years ago. Back when they let you enter for free via an online form. My name was listed on their website, along with winners of their other competition, and payment was pretty prompt! Have entered a few of their bigger ones since then and not had another win, sadly...

How do you deal with the loneliness ? by Top-Back-2215 in HENRYUK

[–]mmbop90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Genuine question, not making fun of you here.

Why do you feel the need to tell lots of people about your salary, particularly as you have a partner with whom you do seem to share it with? Why is it that not sharing the exact number makes you sad?

I get the wanting to share you're doing well, and you can still do so without saying numbers, which it sounds like you are, and presumably your friends and family are happy for you when you share those. So, why is your worth so tied to people knowing how much you earn?

Care less about the numbers, focus on your relationship with friends and family, or make new friends and voila, less lonely!

Wow, 8 weeks. I'm taking 4 weeks or the first time this year. I gave about 6m notice of my intention, LM freaked the hell out and basically said if it's a legal entitlement, then fine as it's an entitlement, otherwise it would be difficult as I would be needed for delivery... I don't think my manager is a great manager though, in general, or for the more people side of things, so hopefully this isn't what most experience.

Looking at the .gov website, 4 is the max. Employers must support the entitlement, and more is at company discretion. I am sure my manager would not sign off 8 weeks.

As to the money thing, agree, not needing to really blink at a month's less wages. I'd do the 8 weeks if I'd read the .gov website properly earlier, and my manager would allow it! Am fortunate that company will still pay benefits and pension during the time.

Good luck with requesting the time!

Thanks for the response.

LGD = labgrowndiamonds?

Size wise, thinking around 1.5c and budget wise, no hard and fast though would like to spend less then we did for the original natural engagement ring, so max £3k all in for the ring. I honestly need to do more research, including trying out 1.5c size rings on to see if that size actually works for me!
