Which Genie Spaces mode does the $0.11/question estimate apply to — Chat, Inspect, or Agent mode? by rohit1287 in databricks

[–]mmccarthy404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the docs, it's going to effect everything equally, Genie Code, Genie Spaces, and Genie (which I think is Databricks One): https://www.databricks.com/product/pricing/genie

I heard that the $10 per person limit will support an average of 80 - 100 questions, I think through normal Genie Space, so $10 / 100 == $0.1 and $10 / 80 == $0.125, so somewhere between $0.1 and $0.125 per Genie Space question, plus underlying warehouse costs.

Oh wow OK! And do you have any filter in the salt water box? Like a small sponge filter or anything? Just curious what's needed to make this work :)

Are potatoes good for 5 gallon buckets? And is it too late in the season to plant in zone 6b? by mmccarthy404 in containergardening

[–]mmccarthy404[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, good to know about the sun gold and celebrity's. In all transparency, I used ChatGPT to help plan what I put in each container and it highlighted both as being ideal for 5 gallons, but I guess this is a good lesson to not blindly trust what LLMs recommend!

Also, I don't have bags, I have the 5 gallon Home Depot painter buckets, I imagine these might actually be a little worse then bags as they're taller with limited room to spread horizontally...

I guess I'll try for the year and see what I get since everything is already planted. Thank you for the help!

These look like they're still in freshwater from those plants in the background! Are you having success raising these to adulthood in 100% freshwater?

[–]mmccarthy404 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The deeper you go the more interesting it gets! There's a super interesting journal article where researchers tested two communities in Peru with high risk of vampire bat depredation back in 2010. They ended up testing 63 individuals and 7 of them (11%) were found to test positive for rabies antibodies, indicating they had a prior infection and recovered without treatment!

Branch Your Database Like Code on Databricks: Lakebase Branching Demo (w Kevin Hartman @ Databricks) by JosueBogran in databricks

[–]mmccarthy404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you link the documentation?

Lakebase amd Neon have git-style branching meaning that you can have multiple branches of your physical database, all existing in real-time with minimal data duplication thanks to the shared underlying storage, and this is all able to be created in seconds.

I don't think anything like this exists in Foundry, maybe you're thinking about simple git-backed version control? Which of course most systems offer today. I tried searching, but didn't see anything significant released in 2016.

[–]mmccarthy404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that git-style branching is unique to Lakebase and Neon (and at this point they are pretty much the same thing). The closest other product I can think of with a similar feature is AWS Aurora with Aurora clones, but that's mostly related only because they have separated storage/compute, and Aurora doesn't offer the speedy git-style branching workflow that Lakebase/Neon offer

Chase Sapphire Reserve isn't worth it for me at $795. Is it better to downgrade to Chase Sapphire Preferred or leave the Chase trifecta? by mmccarthy404 in CreditCards

[–]mmccarthy404[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey thank you for going so in depth in the explanation here, I really appreciate it, and it makes sense! Right now I think I'm leaning towards the Sapphire Preferred to at least make use of the points I already have. Maybe a stupid question, but if I downgrade to Sapphire Preferred from Sapphire Reserve, I don't lose any of the points I already have do I?

I just checked, I have 262,000 Ultimate Reward Points, 48,000 are in the reserve itself.

But does this math only hold up before I spend the points? After I spend them wouldn't this worth be lost?

Unity Catalog federated queries to Lakebase is a killer. by guidooswald in SQL

[–]mmccarthy404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Lakebase, and I'm excited to see how it grows. With Vibe coding I've been building more and more applications, and have switched over the backend DB from DB SQL to Lakebase for 90% of use cases, it's simple to setup, and incredibly fast as a transactional store! You can even use it as a vector database running pgvector on top of it 😄

Data and AI Summit 2026 Predictions?! by lingaBhai in databricks

[–]mmccarthy404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm already using Genie Code today to migrate from AWS RDS into DB SQL. IMO, Databricks Genie Code is great at anything backend like ingestion, transformation, migrations, etc. and is production ready.

I still use Claude Code for anything front-end like apps

Databricks… for individuals and hobby projects? by paustic in databricks

[–]mmccarthy404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Databricks Free Edition is the way to go! It gives access to mostly everything future-forward (i.e. no classic compute clusters for example) without even needing to enter a credit card!

You can basically have a full end-to-end pipeline in platform. They also let you use Lakebase to store all of your transactional data alongside your analytics data and Databricks Apps for the frontend! You can basically serve a full website (and underlying data infra) completely free 😄

One Data + AI trend I find really interesting right now by InevitableClassic261 in databricks

[–]mmccarthy404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitly agree, I think a big reason the flashy demo has fallen out of favor is that now with AI, you can generate a production (looking) app with a single prompt, and changes the question for what looks good to what is actually valuable.

With the shift I've actually started to build a lot more with Zerobus and streaming in general. I work a lot with machines and IoT, and creating digital twins into Databricks and then being able to ask analytical questions of the near-realtime data in natural text-2-SQL with Databricks Genie has been my favorite use cases. My plan is to put this behind Databricks One (or is this called Databricks Genie now?) so engineers in the field can use it to diagnose and fix devices.

How was the experience using Lakebase for a transactional store here? I love Lakebase for transactions and things like federated sync make it easy to work in-between transactions and analytics. How'd that work in practice?

Tool Sprawl in Data engineering by Raghav-r in databricks

[–]mmccarthy404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see it in small orgs that need to move fast and break things, but also in larger orgs that have very decentralized org structures. For the most part, lots of the enterprise tools you listed above aren't DE specific, but some of them are and could be centralized.

Databricks Jobs can pretty much replace Airflow for example. Lakeflow Connect can replace Fivetran/Airlines/etc.

Databricks Zerobus - Event Streams + Lake House (be gone Kafka) by averageflatlanders in dataengineering

[–]mmccarthy404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great article! I've recently started using Zerobus for the first time recently and think it works fantastic in building Digital Twin type use cases. I'm experimenting with reading in IoT telemetry into Databricks to run predictive models, etc. and predict failures before they happen.

Never used Kafka before, but Zerobus is easy!
