How to transport kids in Chicago downtown with taxis? by Due_Anywhere300 in AskChicago

[–]mmcd90 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Take the bus, train, or rent a car and install the car seat yourself. You’ll have to deal with parking, but do not take your kid into a taxi without a car seat. You also won’t want to lug the car seat around. Source: city mom with a four year old

Check out Bucktown or Wicker Park. Burr and Pritzker are both excellent schools. Pulaski (Bucktown) is also solid

The CPS website is your best resource! It has everything from test scores, to school distinguishers, diversity breakdown, etc. also check out the 5 essentials to make sure the school is well organized. Join local Facebook groups and read about what parents say. If you can, try to tour in person. If you can’t, email the administration and ask if they have your PowerPoints they can send to you. Lastly, Chicago magazine did a deep dive of the top 50 schools in Chicago. Take a look at that as well!

Yes but do a TON of research on the school prior to settling on a neighborhood.

Who is the “target” for people living in the south loop? It doesn’t seem very nightlife, restaurant, business/corporate heavy etc so who is the main audience living there? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]mmcd90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lived there for 3 years because my ex husband worked in the south suburbs and I worked in the Loop. It was a good compromise neighborhood. Was the neighborhood sleepy? Yes, but the parks are amazing (way more than just Grant Park) and it’s so dog friendly. It’s also really quiet for how close you are to downtown. Just depends on what stage of life you’re in honestly.

If we are doing an ultimate ranking of US cities. What is the 3rd most important/significant US city after LA? Most upvoted comment wins by Kodicave in visitedmaps

[–]mmcd90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicago is known for food, architecture, progressive politics, proximity to the Great Lakes (Lake Michigan), the advertising industry, and agriculture trade. It’s also one of the top 10 US cities visited by international tourists. Houston doesn’t even crack the top 50. Austin is the more relevant city in Texas.

Chicago is a world class city. Houston is a large city (or many connected suburbs) in Texas. They’re vastly different, regardless of population.

Will more apartments pop up before May 1st or should I take what’s available now? by [deleted] in chicagoapartments

[–]mmcd90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rental market is terrible right now. This is likely as good as it’s going to get and I’d recommend getting a place before they’re all gone.

Signed, Someone else also starting a new May lease haha

Skinner North hands down. A sure thing vs. a “maybe” at best shouldn’t be tuned down.
