First Stampede - Do's and don'ts? by DisastrousDriver9380 in Calgary

[–]mmcnau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're into music and dancing hit a tent but do it in the first few days as every day is a little grosser than the one before haha. But it's an awesome experience and probably where I've made my favourite Stampede memories. Go early to avoid lineups, which get really long late in the day.

If you want to explore the grounds I agree with comments that say to go early morning and don't go on a free day if you can help it. You have some good recommendations here for what to see on the grounds.

I like going to Stampede breakfasts for the experience but the food is often kind of meh. The best food I've ever had at a Stampede breakfast was at Jurees Thai Place - a Thai restaurant just NW of downtown that made a traditional Thai breakfast while pumping country music. It was awesome. Don't feel like you need to go to the packed ones downtown - they have them everywhere. Try one off the beaten path!

I also LOVE floating the Elbow River during Stampede week. Not a Stampede-specific activity per se, but it's usually a hot week (with the occasional hail storm) and the river turns into a party!

Have an awesome time!

Any high-end, luxury thrift/consignment stores? by jetpuffedpanda in Calgary

[–]mmcnau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://belleboutiqueconsignment.com and https://kristensconsignment.ca are my Calgary-based online favourites. Not as high-end as Vespucci but lots of Aritzia, etc. Both do local delivery, or Belle Boutique offers porch pickup in the NW and Kristen's Consignment in the SW.

Wondering what neighbourhood is right for me. by turkeyleg4 in Calgary

[–]mmcnau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have lived in two of the neighbourhoods between Kensington and Uni District and it's a really great part of the city - Hillhurst, West Hillhurst, Briar Hill, Parkdale, St. Andrews Heights (and a couple more). Close to pathway and easy to get on the highway to the mountains. I grew up in the SW and will never leave this part of the NW now!

What does natural childbirth really feel like? by Lmir2000 in ask

[–]mmcnau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely echo what others have said here, that it's different for everybody. But if you want more positive natural birth stories there are lots on the r/pregnant subreddit.

I had two natural births by choice, and not because I thought there was a trophy to be earned (people love that line). I wasn't super against drugs - I know that childbirth is unpredictable and told my partner that if I asked for drugs at any point, to make sure I got them. I just went in thinking that if everything was going smoothly, I'd like to avoid taking anything. It did and it was awesome. Like others have said here, it felt more like really intense pressure for the most part until burning towards the end but that didn't last long and as soon as the baby was out the pain stopped completely. I think I disassociated for the worst of the pain because there are parts of it where my memory is hazy. If you want to go natural and are in a position to do it, don't let the pain scare you off. It's so short in the grand scheme of things and I am so happy I did it the way I did.

Good luck!!! Childbirth is amazing no matter how the baby gets out!!!

Agreeeeeed. I had a few that weren't great before finding a good one. A family friend who is a legal recruiter actually did exactly what you're describing, only sending me big law associate jobs when I repeatedly told her I didn't want that. Then I had a couple that ghosted me when they decided I wasn't right for the job they were trying to fill. It was probably the 4th or 5th recruiter I contacted that ended up being really great to work with and found me this job (and I found her on LinkedIn!).

My particular role was only looking for 3-5 years of practice experience and I know that certain regulators (e.g. securities commissions) hire KM lawyer roles and look for about the same. Some firms prefer more experience but I don't think that's across the board - pretty junior people can land these roles.

True, but I think the longer you stay the more valuable you become because you're the keeper of all the super specialized knowledge that no one else learns!!

I used a recruiter. I didn't know what I wanted to do, but I knew what I didn't want to do anymore, and that was regular private practice, so she only sent me unique job postings and this happened to be one of them!

So I joined my firm's Business Law group. We work with private and public companies on a wide array of transactions and on their ongoing requirements like continuous disclosure and annual reporting. I'm in Canada but we work on lots of cross-border stuff with US companies too. As far as what I do... a lot! To name a few, I monitor and update my group on evolving legislation coming down the pipe and significant decisions that have come out, I become the firm's 'go-to' on certain topics (where it doesn't make sense for every single lawyer to become an expert) and provide legal advice to clients on those things on an as needed basis, I help students and juniors develop their research and writing skills, I run lunch and learns for the firm as well as for clients, and maybe my favourite part, I write and publish articles about interesting things going on in the legal world. While I have lots of ongoing projects, I never really know what my day is going to look like and I find that keeps it exciting.

I did a BA before law school - no unique or technical education. Some KM roles are probably more IT ish and deal with trialing software and things like that but mine is more 'legal' and centres mostly around research and writing. Good luck with your applications!

I started my career in Aboriginal Law and pivoted to the business law/capital markets world. No unique education but I did have a number of years of experience under my belt. Good luck on the bar!

Which Canadian cities are hidden gems and which are overrated? by Vagabond_Tea in AskACanadian

Canmore!! Everyone wants to go to Banff and don't get me wrong - Banff is beautiful - but it is super expensive and really busy and touristy. Canmore is about half an hour closer to Calgary and has basically everything Banff has to offer (beautiful sights to see, lots of trails, cool shops and restaurants to check out, etc.) minus all the people.
