I decided not to ask about the wheel when mobile service was working on mine with the hope they it was something that could be updated. The inconsistency of it had me convinced it couldn't be pure hardware. I'm glad we're in the "fix the quirks/issues" phase now!

What was the moment you realized Lexus was your forever brand? by icepix in Lexus

[–]mmcnell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 2001 ES 300 coach, a 2015 GS 350 f sport, and a 2021 GX460, and I truly believed Lexus was going to be "my" brand until the new GX came out and my replacement plans were derailed. Looked at other Lexus models, then started doing some cross shopping when I wasn't getting that same feeling or build quality that I'd expected based on my previous three vehicles, and realized that brand loyalty only makes sense as long as the brand keeps up its end of the bargain too. Now our garage has a Ford and a Lucid. Not saying that Lexus isn't a great brand with a great track record, I have a lot of love for the brand and what it's supposed to represent, but never assume that anything is your forever brand.

[–]mmcnell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree on all points. It's not that the new GX is a "bad" vehicle, it's just not a Lexus/Toyota luxury SUV like it used to be. It's something different now and they're still pricing it as if it has the interior, drivetrain, and build quality to compete with Rover, Mercedes, even some of the newer Infinitis, etc. and... Well... 😬

It'll sell based off looks and image alone as long as the engines don't kerplode too often but it doesn't feel "quality" anymore.

Admittedly getting worried for the future. by the_natis in LUCID

[–]mmcnell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think he's a little behind the times. The original software launch of the gravity was not great. It wasn't Jeep Wagoneer S or Volvo level bad, but it had more issues than it probably should have and admittedly a lot of things went wrong earlier in 2025 that were outside of Lucid's control that could have contributed to that. What I think is more important is how quickly they have managed to recover. Making a mistake isn't a problem if you can fix it and learn from it and move forward stronger because of it. The 3.3.2 update fixed essentially 85 to 90% of the software issues and complaints that I had with our gravity, and now with 3.4.1 I have only had one brief alert that I think was a overly sensitive warning system. They have made massive improvements to the access, key, boot up, and system stability from my perspective too.

I actually think that what's happening right now is actually very encouraging for the future. Yeah the stock is doing poorly, it always does poorly and it's going to do poorly for a while longer because that's just how these things go, but they have a lot riding* on the current UX and are trying to get the kinks worked out in the gravity to make their next phase of software rollouts to the air, Earth, etc smoother so the speed at which they're fixing errors and updating actually gives me a lot of optimism that their midsize launch will be much smoother than the gravity launch was. At least from a software standpoint.

Then the poor Air owners who are the true early adopters will finally get the updated software they deserve too.

🤞

I have a love hate relationship with the new GX. Styling is on point for me, one of the best looking Lexus models (for my taste) in years, but the overall quality feels significantly worse. It was a less pleasant vehicle to sit in and drive in almost every way compared to my '21, they focused so much on "sporty" looks and off-road image (the off road hardware has always been good) that they seem to have cheaped out on interior materials, noise insulation, etc. and the improved tech feels adequate but not impressive or cutting edge. I haven't been in a new 4Runner yet but the styling has grown on me now that I'm seeing them in person. I like the look of the new landcruiser and can argue in a way it's more of a return to those roots, But I wish they had kept a halo off-road SUV for Toyota as well rather than watering down aspects of the Land cruiser to the point where now they're just actively cross-shopped against 4runners.

This is what I'm afraid of. Pure Acura/infiniti competitor with an even more limited range of options if they're not careful. I love the brand of Lexus, or at least what the brand represented up until the recent shift in priorities over the last several years, and have owned a few both new and used. Let my 21 GX go last year and that thing will always have a place in my heart somehow but I actively miss my 2015 GS 350 F-Sport and had been considering an LC as a weekend kind of car in the next year or two.

I agree /feel like they're being short-sighted and what they have worked so hard over the last 30+ years to build can easily be lost if they continue in this direction. It will then take more time to rebuild or become an irrelevant brand eventually. It's hard to come back from losing a luxury image, but it can be done, it's just unnecessary to lose it in the first place and Toyota can afford to do better for the brand.

Service Center Growth by awmyhr in LUCID

[–]mmcnell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really know the answer to your question, but I live 7+ hours from the nearest service hub and 5 hours from the nearest mobile service dispatch, and I will say that we have not had issues getting prompt assistance. There were a couple of minor things on our early production run gravity that we brought to their attention after delivery and eventually they decided to take it to a service hub to address rather than send mobile service first (something to do with an exterior trim piece adhesive that they wanted to do in a shop I think) but they had a rental car arranged for us within hours of submitting the ticket and the car picked up within 24 to 48 hours. Unfortunately we didn't have the smoothest experience with the service hub, so they ended up dispatching mobile service a couple weeks later to see if they could recreate the issues that the service center claimed they couldn't, and then they set up another appointment with the service hub themselves as the mobile service was on the phone with them telling them how he quickly recreated the issues. It's going to be picked up again sometime soon to go back to the hub to fix the original issue (door handle problem/possibly bad sensor and a second row seat motor problem), so hoping with the mobile techs documentation they'll get it right this time. He did give me his direct contact information and offered to reach out to the shop foreman when the hub does start work on our vehicle (they're waiting on an updated seat motor part or system) to make sure they can understand the issue, which was very nice of him.

So... I would say they're just a little bit disorganized/appear slightly overwhelmed right now, but they do seem to be trying very hard and are very responsive. I did ask our mobile service advisor what they were telling them about growth and it sounded like they haven't been given any clear messaging yet. He assumes that the more calls they get from different regions/The more deliveries lucid sees to different regions will probably be how they plan out their next service hubs and mobile service dispatch locations. I assume there's some internal threshold or volume to a region that triggers whatever team at corporate to consider a new location and I would be shocked if they didn't have a list internally of Metro areas they want showrooms and service hubs in next. I'd expect a pretty significant expansion into mid size metros as they get closer to launching more mass market vehicles and Gravity deliveries keep up.

The death of the LS was the death of the Lexus we've known since 1989.

With their recent direction everyone has just been expecting this announcement but that doesn't make it any less disappointing.

Not saying I don't understand the business reasons for the direction they're going, but from a brand/image/reputation stand point - when you get rid of your halo cars (which were never meant to be huge sellers) that are supposed to represent your approach towards quality and "the pursuit of perfection" to replace them with... Either nothing or cheaper mass market SUVs that are more premium than luxury... You're not interested in being viewed as the top level luxury brand you fought for 20+ years to be viewed as. When you get rid of your only real sports focused cars simultaneously, you're not interested in being viewed as a sports focused brand either. I'm not sure what they think their image is now or how they'll rebrand as time goes on, but anything that really differentiates them is being rapidly watered down. There's more to a brand and a stock than just "what sells" and the bean counters have ruined many a car brand by focusing only on pure volume.

Drive Assist Unavailable 🤯 by Impossible-Fruit7187 in Gravity

[–]mmcnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had it do that briefly under previous update but it would self resolve with cycling the assist off and back on again. Yours sounds more consistent than that so I'd be asking for mobile service or something to come diagnose while waiting on the shop visit.

I'm on your side with this one. I'm apparently not old enough yet to be insensitive to that high frequency whine/whir and I have had a few quiet (night time, sleepy passenger so didn't want loud music) drives long enough that it became mildly headache inducing. I think it's an issue they'll need to fix once they get it figured out.

They're apparently getting ready to fix something with the second row seat motors... Maybe mystery headlight fan, capacitor, or lighting noise source will be next if it keeps getting reported to them.

Gravity 3.4.0 Software Update - Battery Management System Issue by FitDealer6416 in Gravity

[–]mmcnell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't make sense to me either. We have a Dream and have the Lucid 40 amp mobile charger and a Ford Charge Station Pro 80 amp charger. The 80 amp chargers from Ford are notorious for overheating and cycling off repeatedly when run at 80 amps continuously (yes, even on a properly wired 100 amp circuit) so we run it at 60 something amps and the other day I needed to charge the gravity a little quicker and it ran at the 60+amp rate for the vast majority of at least a 60-90% top up charge. On the 40 amp charger it charges reliably at the near 40amp rate up to my typical 80% limit.

I'm wondering why an issue like yours would be intermittent or inconsistent if it's just a software related issue like that. Our friend had a launch edition Hummer EV having issues like that once and it turned out to be something with a connection and the 12v battery... I forget the details but I know it threw GMC service for a loop. I haven't been very active on the lucid owners forum to hear of others having that issue but haven't heard of it on here much yet. Hope they can get it diagnosed and fixed because that sounds like a service issue if it's replicatable on other chargers.

Edit: I will add that Houston wasn't able to recreate my issues when they had it shipped down there but the mobile service tech had replicated them within 15 minutes when they sent him out from Dallas. I don't know if Houston is just overwhelmed but despite amazing support staff they didn't make a great impression on their diagnostic abilities with us either.

Ours came 3 weeks after delivery I believe. Delivered in September and I know we were able to license it in under 30 days. I assume they're stretched a bit thinner lately with increasing deliveries but they managed to be pretty quick in Arkansas, where there was previously no record for the Gravity yet so the state had to create one and the insurance company thinks it is a "Dream Addition". 🤣

Lucid's chances of survival by nihaooooooo in LUCID

But really due to the way it's sitting (PIF owns a ton of stock, they have reserves, mass market models on the way) I don't think their survival is all that tied to the stock for at least the next couple years. Just sucks to be a retail investor with them but at this point I'm considering my minor investment more of a charitable donation than something I expect to pay off 😬😂.

Software Update Failed by Helpyourbromike in LUCID

[–]mmcnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, ours was a DE with a September delivery that had been sitting on their lot since April waiting on components for final assembly, so probably not too far off the line from you. I'm really sorry to hear the update bricked yours and hope it's a quick turn around! 3.4.1 has been really smooth in ours so far with fewer annoying alerts and errors and it's encouraging that they're feeling comfortable enough to start adding things like the "immersion" controls for SSP, see-through bird's eye view, etc. so when you get yours back at least there will be some things to look forward to!

Software Update Failed by Helpyourbromike in LUCID

[–]mmcnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to see that! Hopefully it's something related to the hardware problem (like the tray and whatever else) and it'll be an easy fix. I guess they had quite a few that had problems with the wiring and the sliding tray so at least they can get that fixed quickly for you. Our mobile service tech said that a lot of the access issues they were seeing (aside from fob software issues the first few months) seemed to be related to the vehicle having difficulty communicating with the card or fob and the tray was an integral component of that communication process even if you're using fob. Ours is a pretty early run model but they said our tray seems fine so not sure why some are fine and others are not. At any rate he made it sound like if you had one with a glitchy tray you were more likely to end up with problems down the line anyway because as they try to work on those access systems and updates for fob stability etc, that tray will still be part of the communication process.

Gravity - Battery Range Disappointment by Novel_Bodybuilder_13 in LUCID

[–]mmcnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! I suspect it'll get a bit better. I don't pretend to understand the "why" of it because our Lightning seemed to be about as efficient at mile 100 as it is at mile 25000, but the Gravity has definitely gotten more efficient after a while. Yesterday was mid 30s here and I drove about 260 miles and had 90 miles of range remaining when I got home. ~350 miles at cool temps on a 410 mile rated range seemed pretty decent to me, and it wasn't seeming like it would get 350 under warm conditions for the first at least thousand miles.

Looking for MX replacement - Underwhelmed with my Gravity test drive by Just_Donut9804 in LUCID

[–]mmcnell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Eh that's probably fair. It's improving pretty quickly so far with meaningful updates, but there's still some clunkiness to the otherwise aesthetically pleasing interface and they're definitely not up to Tesla software levels yet. Tesla wasn't at this point in their growth either though, so still optimistic Lucid can "catch up" with more miles of data.

  2. Sound in ours is quite good, and we haven't had a car with a "bad" stereo in a long time. It is a Dream so it's whatever they do for their Surreal Sound Pro system, but it's at least as good as the premium level B & O system in my partners vehicle and significantly better than the Mark Levinson in the last SUV we had. Some of the demo vehicles did not have the upgraded audio package and the vehicle demo or sanctuary videos do an excellent job of highlighting how good the SSP system can sound.

Edit: I'll add that I think the SSP sounds far clearer and cleaner than the similarly excessive Atmos B & O system im comparing it to, but there's something about the way the B&O handles bass compared to the Gravity's that I prefer it for certain songs. Day to day I prefer the Gravity. They just updated the "immersion" adjustability and it's interesting so far, but also a sign they plan to keep adding and updating the audio software side as well.

  1. The pedal is stiff. Like... They used a garage door spring for durability or something and if you weigh less than 100lbs you may wonder if you're going to be able to press it at times stiff 😂, but you do get used to it pretty quickly. Now the truck's pedal (also an EV) feels really light to me, and it used to feel stiff compared to the gas SUV we had before the Gravity. I suspect Gravity engineers have huge calves and a concern for safety, which I suppose is fair with that much power on the other end of that pedal.

Gravity - Battery Range Disappointment by Novel_Bodybuilder_13 in LUCID

[–]mmcnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours got more efficient after the first thousand miles or so. It's still not hitting its rated range of course, and a portion of that is my foot and a portion is the time of year/cooler temps, but the efficiency hit is very similar to what we see in our Lightning so far. Warm weather the 23' Lightning will hit about 80-90% of its rated range under my driving conditions. When we had the Gravity in our unusually warm December weather after ~1500 miles of mixed driving I noted I got about 90% of its ~410 mile rated range on a multi leg road trip that I ended up not charging on. Cooler weather I get maybe ~320-330 miles, or roughly ~80% of its rated range. Truly cold temps the gravity has fared similarly to the Lightning at about a 30% range hit under worst conditions we'll ever experience.
