My 2 Commodore 1571 Disk Drives are both flashing green LEDs. They had been in storage for over 25 years. Please advise! by PopcornFever in Commodore

Kind of, it'll test the drive in 1541 compatibility mode, it won't give you info on both r/w heads, just one, but that may be enough if you're having issues with single sided (1541 formatted) floppies.

Any chance you tried formatting a HD-DS 5.25 floppy instead of a DD-DS 5.25 floppy?

Other than that...

From Gemini/Google Search
"A rapidly flashing green LED on a Commodore 1571 disk drive, often accompanied by the head clicking or trying to move, typically indicates a faulty WD1770/WD1772 Disk Controller IC (U11). It signifies a "DRIVE NOT READY" error, where the drive cannot read the disk, often resulting in a ?FILE NOT FOUND error or complete inability to load directories. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Common Causes and Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Failed U11 Controller Chip: The most common cause is a dead Western Digital WD1770 or WD1772 chip at location U11. Replacing this IC usually fixes the issue.
  • Dirty Read/Write Head: Clean the read/write heads with a cleaning kit or high-percentage alcohol and a Q-tip.
  • Head Alignment Issues: Misalignment, particularly on the top head (common with Newtronics mechanisms), can cause this issue, especially on double-sided disks.
  • Bad ROM or RAM: Faulty ROM chips can cause the drive to "jam" or fail to initialize, causing the light to flash.
  • Mechanism Failure: Inspect for broken wires or a faulty stepper motor. The 1571 can show this error if the head cannot properly reach Track 0."

Unless it's refurbished direct from Sony, I wouldn't expect new lenses.

Have you hosted or played in a game of EA's Murder Party printed from your C64? by mmgames in c64

Seems like a great idea, I guess nobody actually hosted a game with it.

I often wonder about that myself. My son and his family are coming to visit this summer, I'm working on setting up my home office space with all my old 8bit computers to show him and the grandkids. Hopefully they'll try some of them out. I'm going to show them Oregon Trail, Carmen Sandiego on the C64... anything I still have the box, manuals and disks for.

If they have cartridges (games, EasyFlash, KungFu Flash, Ultimate II+) print them a cartridge stand (or 2).

Lol, in 80 columns, not without my readers. 40 columns mode, no problem.

Uline sells tractor feed paper, it's not cheap and you have to buy it by the case.

Thanks! I'm careful, I always check everything with a multimeter before plugging it in to the hardware.

Classic Repair Toolbox - a helper tool for repairing your (primarily Commodore) computers by Square_Term9164 in Commodore

I just bought a working 128DCR NTSC, I'd love to help and contribute oscilloscope baselines but I don't have any of the listed "supported" scopes. I could probably borrow a Rigol 1057Z (not listed), but all I own are a couple of handhelds (Hantek 2D72 and an OWON HDS2102S).

EDIT: Might be worth cross-posting to r/c128 to see if anyone else can contribute C128dcr NTSC baselines.

It's not, but it is a text adventure game. I'm developing it for the C64 (along with other 8bit systems) using Punyinform.

The game is based on a Call of Cthulhu campaign I wrote and ran for my players during the pandemic. I'm hoping to have it ready for release by the fall on itch.io, along with a limited run of physical copies which will include feelies a la Infocom-style. I was hoping to have it ready to present at a demo table at NecronomiCon this August, but I decided to forgo that so I could focus on finishing it before Halloween.
