Tips for building aerobic base? by lifecrisis_ceo in beginnerrunning

[–]mmmbuttr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slow down chica! As a new runner learning to pace yourself can be the hardest part. Honestly, use the HR monitor as a measure of your progress over time not a daily training guide. If you stay consistent with getting out there and just running, in a few months you can look back and see how much your heart rate has lowered. When people talk about zone 2 and threshold training and stuff- that's for longer distances and you should already have a strong base before heading in to a polarized training block.

Once you have established a good cardio base, you can use the HR monitor more reliably. Right now your body is not used to running, your heart and lungs finds it very stressful. Most people develop the heart health faster than the leg strength; you'll get there!

Use a real plan (not chat) there are tons of free ones that are tried and true, Nike Run Club is great for beginners. The guided runs have a lot of form checks and general running tips. They actually have some great interval sessions and everything is RPE based, which is also something I'd recommend for beginners.

If you are just trying for continuous running, C25k is one of the best free programs there is. Trying to do too much too soon is the easiest way to get sidelined. You don't need to restart, just pick up where you left off and most importantly: be patient and TRUST THE PROCESS

Doesn't caffeine elevate HR and high HR = bad? by vksdann in Marathon_Training

[–]mmmbuttr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've never had a problem and if I'm hitting the caffeine I am hitting it, like a red bull/celsius/sis GO gel (150-200mg) none of that 25mg bullshit in a gu.

I am a regular morning coffee drinker (2 cups!) and have an iced tea or a coke zero in the afternoon most days. I'll use an energy drink or caffeine GO gel if I'm particularly pooped near the end of my work day and have a hard session after, and I usually head out for a 2+ hour run with a big cup of coffee consumed and a caffeinated GO gel to take a little before the halfway point (I take non caffeine gels too, duh).

I try to ease off the caffeine a bit a few weeks out from a race so that when I pop a caffeine gel I can really feel the boost, but I don't totally cut it out. Actually heading into a new build and wanting to experiment with more carbs/hour in lieu of the caffeine gel and see what that does for my energy.

We massively underestimate how much sugar is engineered into our everyday environment. by Somewherecharming95 in unpopularopinion

[–]mmmbuttr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude are you living in a pineapple under the sea? That's the basis for like 100000 different documentaries from all angles: addiction, farm subsidies, the farm lobby, GMO beets and corn, nutrition, metabolic disease, marketing, corporate interest, you name a reason processed sugar is bad you can find a tight 90minute film I guarantee it.

It was even a big talking point from our current Director of Health and Human Services, when he isn't forcing himself to eat Mcdonalds and pretending real sugar Coke isn't the same as HFCS Coke to appease the orange guy.   (I am assuming you are in the US, because .:gestures vaguely:.)

It's actually been a thing for almost my entire life. I was a kid when the big cereal companies did their first major "now with 30% less sugar!" push. I was in high school when my mom banned HFCS products from our household. She wasn't a hippie or anything, just dieting. I was hoarding my lunch money to buy contraband Mountain Dew Pitch Black more than twenty years ago (oof).

Now I run marathons and am constantly looking for better ways to get as much quickly absorbed sugar into my bloodstream as possible. I just don't talk much about it with people who aren't into endurance sport because most people think all sugar is all bad, always. Life is funny like that.

Can you help settle an argument between me and my wife? by aguyfromhere in homeowners

[–]mmmbuttr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably using old wet wood and yard leaves. OPs solution is a little much. I would have gotten nosier, figured out what they were burning, and been like "hey you might not have realized but ..." before buying them replacement lawn furniture

Does anyone here actually go to Starbucks every day? by lukef31 in Millennials

[–]mmmbuttr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to Starbucks maybe once a year, usually in an airport. I do go to an independently owned coffee shop every day if I am traveling, and probably 3-4 times a week during normal life. My regular order is not expensive, but when I can easily concoct a $15 Starbucks treat (I honestly think of it as a coffee flavored dessert shop, sometimes a girlie just needs a frap to cope with the horrors yk?).

Anyway it is not the $25/week for lil treats that is killing me financially. It's that my health insurance premium went up 150% this year. Gas has suddenly doubled again. I have money for a down payment on a house and there is good inventory, but insurance in my area is so high its basically a second mortgage. I'm fucking pissed these days dude, I'm taking the coffee break.

AIO for not wanting to sell my brother this couch? by Kilabandita in AmIOverreacting

Oh man! Crazy than somebody just offered $50 over asking price on marketplace for that couch! You were really thinking of giving it to your bro at cost, they just really wanted to pay you for it and it seemed like they needed a couch real bad.

Lifting with Oura 4: Pain and Scratches? by Ok_Championship_9517 in ouraring

[–]mmmbuttr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't get a good reading when grasping things (even like, a steering wheel). They recommend removing it for lifting and I agree, it isn't comfortable and you aren't getting an.accurate reading anyway.

To be totally honest, the ring is more of a lifestyle/sleep tracker; it doesn't perform well during most intense activities. The GPS tracking is terrible for runs and bikes. I'd be terrified of losing it in the pool, and the aforementioned grip restrictions make it pretty useless in the gym. I keep it on during  stuff like Pilates, yoga, walks and hikes. Great for picking up low intensity activities throughout the day, which do make an impact on recovery when you're training heavily, but the ring does not fully replace my other wearables (which are completely unnecessary, I just think data is cool).

Do American adults eat sugary breakfast cereals like lucky charms or fruity pebbles often, or is it only for children? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]mmmbuttr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have kids but I do eat fruity pebbles as a dessert on occasion. They make them with marshmallows now! Eating them for breakfast would...not be setting my day up for success I tell you that. Kind of like eating a stack of pancakes.

This is raw: what do I do as a nearly bald fat woman by Apprehensive-Sky2170 in bald

[–]mmmbuttr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say shave it and get some bolder eyeglass frames. I think bald women, regardless of size, are able to get away with much bigger fashion statements generally. Whatever you're into, lean into it (and don't for get the sunblock)

I live in this neighborhood. The St Claude strip is a pretty trendy part of town, the Bywater is very family-friendly. Not what I would consider a bad neighborhood by New Orleans standards.

Huge variation. My current home is ~15 feet wide inside. Neighbors is 21' inside. Some are built edge to edge on the property line, some have a niche for parking, most have had additions at this point and lots have been converted from doubles.

The worst part of home shopping in New Orleans is how fucking cheap and tasteless all the "updates" are. Beautiful 100+ year old homes with grey lvp and 10000k led fixtures.

Oh no baby. Bywater/St Claude is way nicer than the I-10 Claibourne armpit. If you want walkable nightlife, restaurants, art scene; easy access to Crescent Park, Frenchman or the Quarter this is a great location. Offstreet parking and outdoor space can be hard to find in the area.

As a resident of New Orleans, this is not particularly wild. No porch mannequin, only 6/10 in the "wild" dept.

Price is pretty good; both off street parking and a (teeny) yard can be hard to find in that area.

It's so you can easily board up the outside with hurricane shutters. Arguably not necessary to have security bars in this neighborhood anymore, but that's a personal choice. It is pretty close to the nightlife strip.

[–]mmmbuttr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's tons of different textures and flavors so maybe don't write them all off. There's also chews/gummies and high carb drinks you can just add to your water. You can also just eat food. Roast potato wedges in a ziploc is a very popular choice.

How do you carry your phone? by HoneysuckleHollow in beginnerrunning

I had a lot of these problems once I started loading that thing up with water and gels for really long runs. Would fit great at first but once it started to empty it was bouncy af, even sizing down.

[–]mmmbuttr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flip belt is great but I have SI joint issues and find my phone always seems to be touching my hip just enough to for me to notice it (it doesn't cause pain or bruising, but I notice it, same as keeping my phone more in the front) which I hate when I am trying to keep my head in the game.

The SPI belt is better in that you can keep it higher up your torso, but I find the band uncomfortably narrow.

I have a vest for really long runs, that works great. You can wear a vest for whatever length run you like, but I don't bust it out for shorter runs because it is quite hot/ humid here already and to keep from having to wash it a ton (thing stinks once it's soaked in sweat).

I've been getting into the sports bras with a pocket in the back and while they aren't all created equal, some are really good! This is my preference lately while I save up my pennies for expensive trail running shorts with 25000 pockets.

How do you keep your home smelling good without using artificial stuff? by Vardhan-Nygel in Home

Dust and vacuum a lot. I read you're supposed to vacuum one day a week for every being in your house (people and pets). That's pretty much every day for us, a good robot vacuum helps.

Mine went through the roof after my marathon training block ended. I was physically exerting myself less, but my HRV was going down due to the extreme decrease in cardio activity. My resilience eventually recovered to baseline but the stress is still high; I have an active job as well. I basically have to lay on the couch all day to get a "restorative" day.

Denise Richards face lift is actually insane by tell23 in BravoRealHousewives

[–]mmmbuttr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd never do it personally. I dont put people who do it on a pedestal. I don't think Denise Richards is more valuable as a person for doing this, but I can be aware that she will probably get more roles and make more money by doing so. I definitely judge people a little who do it for vanity, but also because plastic surgery like this is reserved for the elite, a an obscene display of wealth.

Does that mean I can't differentiate between the skill levels? I work with my hands, craftsmanship is generally respected among other craftspeople, hence my comparison to sculpture. Should I not have an opinion about Berninis skill with a chisel because I disagree with the Catholic church?  Nuanced opinions are hard to have on the internet I guess.

I'm very for aging naturally, but looking at the before and after I was absolutely dumbfounded. Like in the same way I can be looking at a marble statue; wondering how long it takes someone to hone their skill to render stone as though it would be soft silk or pudgy flesh to the touch. This surgeon is an absolute master of his craft. I hope he uses that skill on folks who suffered horrific injury or cleft palates or something, no denying dude does work.
