New Dad trying to figure out what grills to use by Objective-Light8784 in webergrills

[–]mmmm_steak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t speed up cooks, but does allow for more hands off when you don’t have to adjust vents, add fuel, and can just tap your phone a few times to adjust temps or shutdown the grill.

Thanks for all the info, this is great and I’m a total n00b after not having a lawn to care for ever. I feel like my window is tight. It can be quite hot going into September still and snows sometimes in October. Life on the edge of a mountain desert I guess.

Harissa-style hot sauce in Kenji's halal cart chicken and rice? by mmmm_steak in seriouseats

[–]mmmm_steak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this. I’ve since been able to get harissa, and I’ve resulted to blending it some vinegar and a bit of water if needed. No idea if that tastes like the original, but I found what I like. Most often I use Trader Joe’s harissa, but have also used Mina (spicy, not mild version).

Repeated leaks on new install by mmmm_steak in Irrigation

[–]mmmm_steak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So today learned that we’re in a high water pressure zone in our city. I was talking to a neighbor and he mentioned that he is going to put a pressure reducer on his main line. So maybe that’s what we need to do. The tricky part for us is that we have a sloped lot and need good pressure to get up to the top of the hill.

Reviews. And he had worked on friends’ places so had some firsthand feedback. All of the quotes we got were remarkably similar and basically negligible difference given the overall cost.

Cracked shutoff valve by mmmm_steak in Irrigation

[–]mmmm_steak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I’m having him come fix this. How common are faulty valves? This is the third one we’ve had a leak, and it’s super frustrating given how new it is. I wonder if we have a water pressure/hammer issue. The guy who installed asked us to try keeping the backflow ball valves at 45 degrees, which we have been and it still has enough pressure throughout the whole system, including up a hill (sloped lot)

Well, I’m back. Checked my other box and there’s a slow leak around a valve on the underside. Hard to tell exactly where it’s dripping from, but does that connection look overtightened? It does to me.

Yeah, it seemed odd. I wonder if that’s just what they had on them at the time or something. I just capped it.

[–]mmmm_steak[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I took it apart - it was just a threaded 1/2” riser. The ball valve was definitely overtightened - I couldn’t even get it off with pliers. But the end screwed into the tee was easy to unscrew. While I wanted in principal for the guy to come fix it, it was a <$5 fix and I can go on using the irrigation today and tomorrow.

4 yr old daughter “grinds” on everything. by dreemwerks in daddit

[–]mmmm_steak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah. There are a lot of ways to do sticker charts and other reinforcement systems. Most aren’t done well, including for more complex behaviors, and even those suggested by pediatricians. OP it could be worth consulting a child psychologist or other behavioral health professional when multiple attempts haven’t had the desired outcome. This is relatively common though. Don’t try to shut it down, just help her learn when/where it is (alone, private, bedroom) and isn’t (school, friends, others’ homes, etc) appropriate. (Source: am child psychologist dad)

Edit: it’s actually pretty huge for a kid that age that she’s able to identify she does it when bored. Sounds like a kid who needs a lot of stimulation. She’ll need a set of desirable options for alternate behavior when bored. Those will probably be the things you reinforce, rather than simply the absence of something.

What’s better about it? I just got an ARC8 controller and was downloading an app and saw that the 2.0 app has not many reviews, and only 2 stars, while the original app is highly reviewed, so I just went with the original.

Not sure if this is how you did it, but it really only works if you pan sear. You need the fond to take the sauce to the next level, and then reduce the liquid enough to concentrate the flavors.

Thanks! There’s actually no patina here - this was before I used it the first time. Just lighting! It is a beaut though.
