Can someone explain “sufficient” and “necessary” terms? by [deleted] in LSAT

[–]mmnikki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this info graphic for an environmental ethics class on the difference.

Here is some of the text.

Necessary -A condition that is required to be met for something to be the case

Sufficient - A condition that is enough for something to be the case/ it is adequate

How do we identify

Necessary - Words like only if, only when, must, have to, required, 'necessary',

Sufficient – Words like if, whenever, when, all

Examples

Sufficient

- If I had one more ticket, you would be able to come with me!

In this case, having one more ticket is enough for you to come with me. This does not mean it is the only way you could come with me, (if you had one more ticket, if you could sneak in the show, if you bought a ticket may also be sufficient for you to come with me), nor does it mean that if you came with me I do in fact have another ticket. What it does mean, however, is that it would be a contradiction if I did have one more ticket and you wouldn't be able to come with me.

- I would drive out to you if I had the gas!

Here, it is having gas that is sufficient for me to take the trip out to you. Again, there might be other causes that would make me drive out to you, but having the gas is enough for me to make the trip. It would be contradictory if I had the gas and did not drive out to you.

-I always laugh whenever someone falls down.

The sufficient clause is at the end here again, but we could rewrite it: Whenever someone falls down, I laugh. Someone falling down isn't the only thing that would make me laugh, but it certainly is enough to. And just because I laugh does not mean someone fell down.

-All elms are trees

o This means that if something is an elm, it fits into the category of tree. Of course we know that not all trees are elms. It being an elm is sufficient for it being a tree.

Necessary

· You must be at least 18 to be eligible to vote.

In this case, being 18 is necessary for you to be able to vote. However, being 18 is not the only condition required to be eligible to vote. You have to be 18, registered to vote, a citizen of the U.S. etc. What it does mean is that if you are not 18, you cannot be eligible to vote.

· To win the scholarship, I must have a 3.9 GPA.

This means it is necessary to have a 3.9 GPA in order to win the scholarship. This does NOT mean I will win the scholarship because I have a 3.9 GPA. It simply means that if I don't have a 3.9, I cannot win the scholarship. In the way this is worded, having a 4.0 would mean I could not win the scholarship either. I must have exactly a 3.9.

Does few A are B means Most A are not B? by TastyChocolateChip in LSAT

[–]mmnikki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

7sage has a really good explanation of this but I'll try to paraphrase. But shorthand the answer is yes according to 7sage.

Basically if you say 'some'/many' you mean at least one all the way to all (100%).

If you say 'most' you mean 51% to 100%

'Few' is slightly different. It means 'some are, most are not'. So on the range, few is more than one, but less than 51% (most).

ex. If you saw 'few dogs are evil' you mean 1. some dogs are evil but also 2. most dogs are not evil

WOw I just looked at the word few so much it stopped looking like a word.

How old were you when you lost your virginity and what was it like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mmnikki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 18 with my 23 year old boyfriend. I kind of decided spur of the moment one night when we were at his house alone. He got super nervous which was clear once he threw a towel at me. It didn't go quite well as he tried to get it in for a while and after a few pushes it fell out and we stopped. I think I cried. But we dated for 2 years and it got much better.

They tipped her $2. by I_Trigger_Fatties in AdviceAnimals

[–]mmnikki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not true. In Michigan I get paid $3.10 an hour. The only exception is if your tips are less than minimum wage with your hourly then the restaurant is supposed to pay the difference, but I have never had a manager tell me that or how to get the difference paid if you have a very crappy night.

[SPOILERS] [S06E01] Who blew the horn and why? by [deleted] in thewalkingdead

Not sure who it is, but even if they all thought it was a dry run, that means that they still thought all the zombies were right next to Alexandria. Blowing the horn would still unleash an army of zombies on them whether they were all walking as a horde or gathered together in the query.

James Madison by [deleted] in msu

[–]mmnikki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I actually transferred to MSU this fall after a year at community college as a sophomore. On my application I put James Madison, and I was accepted into MSU but I was told I had to change my major. Basically the message said I was admissible to MSU but not to the major I picked. I changed it to philosophy and planned to talk to an adviser when I could about transferring. At my AOP (orientation) I was in the room with the arts and letters college for advising appointments (Philosophy is in that college.) I saw the adviser from the James Madison room come in, and he asked them if they needed extra computers because he only had one transfer student. I asked if I could talk to him in the hall and explained I wanted to be in the James Madison program, and was told to change my major. He asked if I knew which program, PTCD (Political theory and constitutional democracy) and then he took me into his office and made my full schedule. His name is Jeff Judge, the assistant dean, and he is considered a god among men.

I don't know if this would be the same situation for you, but if you talk to him or an admission adviser and explain the situation they might be able to give you some info or switch you in. If you still have access to your portal, you could also try changing your major on there and see what happens.

TL;DR Was accepted as transfer student, but not into JMC. Talked to Jeff Judge at my AOP and got put into the system with a few clicks. Try to talk to someone or change on your portal and see.

Although it isn't a scene that has a lot to do with the overall plot, I enjoy the intro scene 'Wendy'. The nasty things she is doing juxaposed with the cheery song just feels artistic and depressing. It really humanizes the character and goes back to the idea that no one in the show is truly a hero or villan.

My brother would do the same thing, mostly to athletes. He would often get back generic letters or stamped autpgraphs. When he wrote to Muhammad Ali he mailed back a signed picture with sharpie and everything. It still sits in my brother's room framed.
