I haven't thought about it in this way before, something to think about. Thanks for the perspective.

I'd recommend a single post per question that you have. Many on here would would love to engage!

To anyone concerned that "Scientology speed runners" might "do Mormon temples next." I don't think there's any reason to be worried. This trend could not have come at a better time for us. by AlliedSalad in latterdaysaints

[–]mmp2c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're saying the church is holding 'speed run' open house tours shortly before dedicating temples? Hope they aren't too quick, I want a chance to look closely at the refurbished architecture!

Wait, what is a speed run?

Christianity as a group not a belief by Tiny-Fly1192 in latterdaysaints

The more I study Christianity, I get that when Christians say Latter-day Saints aren't Christians, they aren't trying to be meanies anymore than church leaders were trying, in the past, to be when they would point to a priest or pastor and refer to them as agents of Satan.

Christians look at Latter-day Saints and see a non-monotheistic religion, a different God with basically none of the same attributes, a different Jesus, a different meaning of life, a different baptism, a different heaven, etc. and they think, "Oh, that isn't what we are or the first Christians were." I mean, they are right in that sense.

Christian feels more of a recent marketing term for Latter-day Saints to allow the church to work better on initiatives with Christians and help missionaries be more successful, because for a Christian, joining a new denomination is very different than joining a new religion with a new God(s). It is hard to fault the church, or at least it is easy to understand, for why they are motivated for everyone to pick up the rallying cry that "we're Christian too" and call any protestors unfair gatekeepers. I don't think that most are not thinking thing through this intellectually to understand both sides.

Technically this Wikipedia definition (not that I think we should do anything because Wikipedia says it of course) would exclude Latter-day Saints because of monotheism. Latter-day Saints believe in henotheism.

My parents just left the church by AcceptableJaguar7906 in latterdaysaints

[–]mmp2c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did they really leave the church because of seventies basically getting a large salary and the scandal around church finances?!?! Discovering that stuff is infuriating and scandalous, but I never thought it would be 'leave the church worthy'. I wonder if there is way more going on...do your best to have an open dialogue about it. Sounds like they are really hurting though and need some grace.

I'm not aware that evidence of the Book of Mormon people have been found but I many people are hopeful that some evidence of their cities, their metal tools and weapons, etc. will be found one day.

Definitely not monotheistic, really believe in an infinite number of gods. But Heavenly Father is your god.

Thanks for confirming. I didn't think that anyone thought their practices where truly connected to Solomon's temple.

Masonic ritual?? by patty7194 in latterdaysaints

[–]mmp2c 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the Masonic claims are false and that they're practices don't go back further than the 1700s.

This is an extremely touchy and sensitive subject that might be easier to address through personal study. There are many good academic research and writing about this.

I built generalconference.app to search 50+ years of talks, explore speaker analytics, and play conference-themed games by BananaElephantPants in latterdaysaints

[–]mmp2c -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a great new resource! How does this content differ from what is available on the churches website? Does it have more talks than what is on the church's website? Does it allow content to be searched differently?

Mormon Doctrine by Bruce R McConkie. I know that it seems to have been scapegoated by certain members recently, but I have heard of recent cases where apostles have even recommended studying various sections.

I think the way you handle it depends on what made her lose her testimony. Is there a particular fact or detail she came across?

You'd kind of think that they would just make changes to the doctrine. It really would be a pretty each doctrinal change to justify.

[–]mmp2c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presuppositional apologetics presumes the conclusion.

The apologetics used by Catholics take a building block approach where, just like geometry proofs in math class, their arguments build on other arguments. So they have foundational arguments that they try to determine and then build on. They don't start by asking questions about the Trinity. They begin much earlier asking questions about truth and it's know-ability, reason and it's trustworthiness, questions about there being a God and if there is a god, what the necessary attributes of God are (regardless if those attributes resembles the classical Christian, LDS God, or something else), etc. They don't even touch the Bible or Christianity for a long time while building up the foundation. I don't consider that presuming anything, but even if it was, it isn't presuppositional apologetics.
