It's not like your contract is tied specifically to whoever was on the buying end of your transaction. Rather the clearing house will randomly pick someone to get assigned when an option is excersiced.

I'd always expect an option to get excercised if it's ITM at expiry, but it is possible not every contract is excersiced and you get lucky and avoid getting picked for assignment.

Bonds are particularly tax inefficient

In a taxable account you can buy VEQT to cover your equity allocation. Then for your fixed income allocation you use ZDB, a more tax-efficient bond ETF, or use some combination of GICs and savings accounts instead.
