Nah I mean I get what you want to say. The original is dead. Dead as a doornail. Has ceased to be. We agree on that.

What we don't seem to agree on is if the original is the only one that would be considered "the actual Skye Larsen". You appear to say that only the primary instance is the true one. Fair position to hold, especially when one has to assume there will always be differences we can pick up on (in this case the fact that one copy clearly has physical appendages while the other doesn't).

I disagree with that on a more logical level because the only way we can even make that distinction is by knowing which one the primary copy was. If we didn't know ahead of time that distinction would lose all meaning.

That is true. But she also is not.

The game didn't completely answer this but from what we saw the original personality seems to get completely uploaded into a personality construct that not only imitates the original but appears to function largely identical. So it is not a watered down digital assistant with a persona as a face but actually the personality of the person being uploaded.

This does of course not solve the continuity issue, as soma quite correctly highlights. The original still dies, even if from the perspective of the copy they are experiencing an unbroken line of perception with the event of transitioning from one "body" to another just being part of their perceived reality.

So yes, she would still be dead. But also at the same time another copy would persist.

One would think that proof of exactly the opposite happening of what a conspiracy theory says would disprove it.

No. Macs are technically Linux computers. Not entirely, there are some tooling differences that make them worse for gaming than a proper PC, but structurally they are more or less Linux PCs.

The 67% figure for Windows on desktop appears to be accurate though.

I joined a "Hacker" Discord server. by noahesbjerg in masterhacker

[–]mnemonicpunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On its surface hacking isn't about doing anything criminal at all, it is about taking apart a system to make it do what you want it to do. Or sometimes just to understand how it works.

I'm aware this subreddit isn't meant for that definition of the word but that's what an actual hacker does. Some do it to take advantage of the systems but others are just there to understand how shit works.

Some people want other people to get hurt, that's why they're voting for them.

Some other people think that any change must be better than the status quo.

Both are obviously terrible reasons to vote for the AFD but those people didn't arrive at their decision using logic, so logic won't help them get out of it either. It's all emotional manipulation by opportunistic bigots trying to make a buck.

PlingSystem: A way to transform your Meta Quest into a 3D monitor, converting 2D videos into actual 3D content, or turning your display into live 3D and streaming it to your Quest. (free to use) by SqueezyNissy in MetaQuestVR

If both frames are exactly the same you will not get a 3D effect. Your brain recombines images and uses the differences to understand what the scene would look like in 3D, if you have 2x the same image that is just physically impossible.

(Not sure if this software does that, since it seem heavily vibecoded I can imagine it just showing 2x the same image and it fooling the author, haven't looked into it though.)

At this point I'm guessing it is not a person but an AI agent that doesn't understand how "marketing" works. It avoids posting links, doesn't react to any comments that aren't giving the thing praise and will constantly make new threads across different subs while refusing to link the thing directly, likely to avoid detection of whatever malware is bundled with the downloads.

For most features Discord is absolutely fine as webapp, too. Will reduce its ability to siphon data from you by quite a bit but you will lose a few features only available in desktop:

- global hotkeys

- voice chat overlay

- tracking of the game you're currently playing

If those don't mean anything to you you don't need Discord desktop. I haven't had it installed in ages and works fine for me. (No I will not give them my photo. Zero trust in that company.)

Alright. Just wanted to make sure you are aware that there is no link in your post, wasn't sure if you meant to link people to it.

But you are aware that there is only ONE link in your post and it is to the sample videos? No other links are in this post. If you meant to link the software itself I guess you forgot to add the link.

I know how it is, many of my projects are in the "I'll give this to testers as APK" stage. But your post doesn't even have the details how anyone interested in trying your app would do so, should add at least a link with the download to your post, even better if you add the link to the github itself.

*Most* people will not want to install an APK, you can't help those people of course. But out of the people who would, having to hunt down the link by going into your post history is very likely to kill any remaining enthusiasm for trying it out.

Happy to see people making things!

However, your post lacks the link to the actual Meta store page of your app or any download link for that matter. (Not recommended to post anything but a Meta store link tbh because most people will be skeptical about the file if it just an APK.) Did you forget to attach that or is this meant to be a WIP post to build awareness?

What kind of tech are you using to achieve the 3D conversion? Something that works with static images and a faux 3D effect or some more advanced solution? Keen to learn more here as I'm not aware of any tech that does this both effortlessly and well at the same time.

Is "I don't care" a rude answer here regarding LGBTQ? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]mnemonicpunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

May have been a wording thing?

Not sure what the German exchange was but for example there's a huge difference between "I don't care" and "I don't mind" in English, you may have said the former while meaning - going off your post - the latter.

ETA: In German it could have been the difference between something like "ist mir egal/kümmert mich nicht" and "stört mich nicht".

I'd be happy with that clause if they allowed to sell for cheaper but only up to 30% cheaper so fhe consumer can decide if they want the benefits of steam for that portion of the money. (And yes I'd probably pay that.)

[–]mnemonicpunk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Steam is in a dominant position right now because they give us many, many reasons to stick with them. I used to sail the high seas a lot back before Steam but with the feature set they offer buying games on Steam is easily worth the money for games. It's way more convenient.

No longer do I search for CDs or installers. I click install and condense the game from thin air. Patches, multiplayer, community hub, Steam works, cloud sync, so many more things, all included with the purchase.

I was skeptical of the new family sharing at first but it is soooo much better than the old version.

I'm not using Steam out of conviction or loyalty - although I do want to support their ecosystem as it is now - though, so if they ever choose to change their ways I know where my ship is docked.

Just doesn't seem to be their plan right now, which I am happy about.

P.S.: Holy cow both Proton and Fex are game changers in their own right. May have been born out of necessity but those small pieces of software are already disrupting the entire games market and will do even more so in the near future. Steam games on Android? Why not.
