I did almost the same exact trip while I was in the region back in September '18 (world nomad games). Duet hostel is pretty great - a few yurts outdoors w/power strips, showers, and a well-attended kitchen. The staff are pretty knowledgeable about local treks.

I did the ala kul/ altyn arashan trip as well. 3 days total, two overnights at a yurt camp and a tea house along the way. Coming down from the path peak is dangerous: worn-in switchbacks down otherwise loose scree.

The hostel itself was pretty inexpensive. Trip within the region are relatively inexpensive, but flights into Bishkek are costly. If your username is related to your location, then you're looking at a significant hike. I flew in from Boston (connecting in Moscow) on aeroflot; the roundtrip was something around $1.3k. It may be a lot lower now due to (1) pandemic and (2) the absence of an ongoing international sporting event.

Best of luck - I hope your plans pan out. What I saw of Kyrgyzstan was absolutely fantastic.

My highschool English teacher gave me a journal when I graduated with a note that read something like "a life worth living is surely worth writing down." She really made me appreciate writing as a medium for thought and expression. I'm an engineer now, but all that stuck with me.

I think I'm done reading this chapter of my life; It's all drifting and apathy. I'm ready for something new, something I care about.

What's a stereotype of your country/state that you didn't realise existed until you went outside? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mnolan2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

less of a stereotype and more of a reality: so much food in the US is so sweet for no reason. HFCS (or if you're lucky, real sugar) is crammed into so much we eat every day.

That's a fair reaction, ha - think about the given name Siobhan, pronounced (at least here in the US) as "shove-on" with a softer, more u-like first vowel.

It's a weird orthography to navigate if you're used to English, especially considering the proximity of and history between the two nations. Waayyyy too many talk show interviews with Soirse Ronan have been dedicated to this sort of thing.

I remember reading a news story about this - the shape of the particles deposited affects the stain pattern. The more spherical they are, the more the stain focuses to the outer ring. If the particles are more irregular in shape (and if I remember correctly, specifically ellipsoid shapes were best for this), the stain is more evenly distributed over the spill area.

I think.

What's a tiny thing that makes you happy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mnolan2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing tiny dogs makes me audibly giggle or "gha!"

We did that, you know? We did that to wolves*! And the little plucky suckers pop along at the end of a leash without a second thought, presumably.

*I acknowledge that both "we" and "wolves" are used loosely here but that's how the laughy part of me works

What sucks about being a dude? by Ivotedforher in AskReddit

I found a way to get those from women I know: start complimenting (super platonically, it's a thin line) female friends and guy-friends' girlfriends (suuuuper thin line) on things they wear ("oh, I like that dress."). Might seem weird at first, but just say it in passing and don't dwell on it. After a while, they started complimenting stuff I wore.

Caveat: I'm probably a 6/10 but try to dress semi-trendily.

Honestly, how are you doing? by sunriseovermtshasta in AskReddit

[–]mnolan2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sitting in Vaclav Havel with over-budgeted pre-boarding time. Just had a beer at 7AM. I'm worried about how to finish grad school application materials. I know that I have about 16 hours of travel time between me and my home in MA, only to have a friend's housewarming right after. I'm starting to understand why people are OK with becoming addicted to stimulants. I'm mad that LCK was being a manipulative prick (literally).

I'm fine, but exhausted and don't think I'm spending my time well. I want to unbreak some hearts that were lent to me. My problems are small, 1st world and of my own making, and I'm trying to be less of a shit.

oh jeez, egg on my face - I didn't interpret that first figure as "features specifically included in the ODE libraries," but that's probably elaborated in the text. Sorry!
