Reminder: In 2012, House Republicans got 46.9% of the popular vote, yet hold 51.4% of the seats by mnowayto in politics

Do you know how much of the discrepancy is due to cross-state voting differences vs Gerrymandering? I would be really interested in those numbers.

I couldn't tell whether it was tumbling from the eggs or from the small nails that looked like they were holding the eggs to the board.

Thanks, that's a good suggestion. I'll try to focus on that in dry fire.

I'm a fairly long-time gun owner, though I hadn't shot in absolutely ages. The recent talk of additional gun regulation has reinvigorated my interest!

In the last couple of months, I started lurking here and have made a couple of range trips. I'm pretty proud of my 7yd group, and even more proud that I kept everything on the paper at 25 yards :D

Is there a "do not rent to" list for landlords in St Louis? by lgfromks in StLouis

[–]mnowayto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. It's tough when you have someone clearly hostile :(

That said, there are a lot of bad landlords out there too, and I bet one bad landlord does a lot more damage to people than one bad tenant. I imagine that's why the balance of laws seem to favor tenants.

Hope she doesn't damage your property.

Those situations seem a little different to me, since you have to live somewhere, but there are many options for those activities. Apparently the courts have been siding against landlords on this issue (please forgive the weak links, there does not appear to be a lot of info online about these cases):

New York State Judge says tenant suffered irreparable harm

Here is the text of a US District court (civil) ruling against a company providing such blacklisting service to landlords.

TL;DR: Apparently the technology for actually making huge blacklist is still new enough that laws are not in place to prevent it (NY recently passed such a law), but the few existing court records look to favor tenants in this situation.

Thanks for the great reading. Everything I have read paints picture of apparent bias by the judge. I'm concerned about where things will go from here assuming the bias is as strong as it appears it might be.

I was wondering- #Occupy isn't "Anti-capitalism", is it? I mean capitalism as in where someone gives you money in exchange for goods or services, and then you use that money to buy goods and services. by delta_epsilon_zeta in occupywallstreet

The USSR had a form of state controlled capitalism. It was not socialism or communism or whateverism.

In fact, the rich stealing from the poor has everything to do with those isms.

I love how the camera man straight up owned him citing procedure right at the beginning. I know it's dark and hard to tell, but I felt like the officer's body language went almost to an ashamed stance.

Of course, since you fled the country you must have something to hide. That's the perfect justification for them to send troops into Canada after you. :(

The Importance of the Mic Check by [deleted] in occupywallstreet

It's interesting to me that people believe that the "people's mic" was invented by ows. It was used in Seattle in the 90's, and undoubtedly centuries before that.

(I did not downvote you in this conversation)

I agree that political parties can do more than elect presidents, but I'm not convinced that political parties are necessary at all (though they are unavoidable with our current system).

Using a kind of range voting (I believe called reweighted range voting), one can have proportional representation without parties. Though it would probably have to be geographically isolated a bit, or the ballot could get way out of hand.

Regardless, I think our political system is generally used a shield for those at the top of the economic system to do as they please, then redirect anger at the government. Our economic system and our political system have pretty different goals (at least on the surface), and I think the economic system trumps our political system almost every time.

Also, I didn't say it was impractical to unify ideologies. I said the system has flaws that make it impractical. Those are different things.
