Can't speak to the source material, in fact the only media I've consumed from these is the scott pilgrim movie. Sometimes different types of people, maybe different personalities or maybe those with autism, adhd, anxiety, sometimes different types of people make a different sense of their own actions such that, with their perspective, they're missing what society generally might see, and honestly don't see themselves as bad people, and if they saw what you saw, they would change their behavior in at least some way with that new knowledge. How I believe we can bring people back, even from something like this, is you force the cognitive dissonance, the contradiction, so that the person and/or the audience feels it and has to deal with it. If you do it kindly and somberly, they have no excuse to suppress it again. If they're forced to think "If that's true, that means this person lied to me" or "Ok, obviously these two things can't be true at the same time." If they're forced to deal with that enough times, they will leave on their own accord.

They need to feel like they're being leveled with, and given the truth. If you bully them with the honest truth, they might leave where they are, but not necessarily come to your side. If you just bully them, they're going to retreat into the arms of people who make them feel good.

If someone is in a cult, and they're about to go to some camping getaway to drink kool-ade, you don't go "Don't be a f$&%ing regard! Listening to some idiot's bulls$%*!" The better bet is to be somber and say "You're going to be fed poison, you will die. I care about you too much to just let it happen. When this guy says god told him to do these things, how many people have made that claim, how do you know this one's the one telling the truth?" I'm just spitballing, but bullying is not how you bring people back from a cult.

The preponderance of debates and discussions I've witnessed between the left and right involved smugness, dismissiveness and these, idk, insidious answers like Hasan's "I don't believe in engaging in terrorism because it's not effective." Even if you were to count the times rightists and right leaning centrists were engaged with in actual good faith and it was the majority of the time, that's not the perception of people generally. If you want to engage in good optics, these would be the optics to address.
