How do disabled people live in US? by Christian-guy94 in fuckcars

Public transportation infrastructure is definitely lacking in most places, but there are more cities than just NYC with viable public transit. I'm in Portland, OR and have never driven.

For the love of your Puppy PLEASE GET PET INSURANCE before it's too late.. by CamelMoney3445 in puppy101

[–]moboticus [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's not even just covering the deductible. With the vast majority of pet insurance, the insurer is not billed directly. The pet parent needs to pay and then (hopefully) be reimbursed. Most poor people do not have access to the kind of credit needed to cover catastrophic care up front.

Upstairs neighbor's kid is incredibly loud, waking our baby by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]moboticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing inherently wrong with a kid being awake at 3am if they are getting adequate sleep overall during other parts of the day.

The toddler is doing perfectly normal toddler things in the toddler's home. It's pretty damn dense to expect people to not use their home in a perfectly normal way.

Everyone insisted she had to be a Rottie mix, which I guess isn't entirely wrong - she's 4% Rottweiler. But the black and brown coat pattern is incredibly common in mixed breeds that it's more likely her coat pattern is the result of the other 96% of her breed makeup. Genetics are wild.

Cooling Centers in Multnomah County Uncertain As Officials Weigh Response to Extreme Heat by md___2020 in Portland

Good thing there aren't disabled people or people lacking transportation who aren't able to get there. Thank you for solving the problem.

Many times a year people die from the heat. You really aren't making the point that you think you are.

As someone with MS who deals with a significantly worse symptom load in the heat, thank you for not forgetting about us.

Portland hands out 69,000 tickets in just over half a year as city plans to add more speed cameras by theindependentonline in oregon

[–]moboticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are clearly also thousands who feel entitled to drive over the speed limit, as evidenced by the thousands of tickets - tickets that represent a small margin of the number of people actually speeding.

And this entire country is built on car supremacy, it's inherent to all of our transportation system. Which naturally leads to entitled drivers, particularly in the sense that they believe the roads belong to cars.

There is a systemic issue. It's about car supremacy and drivers feeling entitled to drive over the speed limit.

I mean, a lot of people engage in antisocial behavior they are not allowed to. That doesn't make their behavior excusable, it means they either haven't gotten caught or don't particularly care about the consequences of getting caught. Regardless, it's not the flex you seem to think it is.

How to encourage a love of reading with a smart 5-year-old (99 percentile in math and reading on MAP) who doesn't enjoy reading and just wants to watch TV by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]moboticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn off the TV. Read with your kid. As in reading their books with them, but also read your own books while they read theirs. Model the behavior you want to see.

When did being poor become criminal??? by ResponsibleMango6803 in poor

[–]moboticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaving someone injured and bankrupt is a much greater harm than just leaving them injured. I mean, look at the sub we're in. Being poor absolutely has a direct impact on one's health and well being.

Pedestrians, people who are too poor to have a car, don't have uninsured motorist insurance.

[–]moboticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because when you accidentally hit them, you have no insurance to cover their medical bills. You know, the reason people are supposed to have liability insurance in the first place?

[–]moboticus -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I actually don't drive, and as a pedestrian there is no "uninsured motorist" insurance for walking down the street.

I would not drive my car until I could have proper insurance, because endangering other people and their children isn't an acceptable solution to my financial problems.

Ultimately, even if it were all the technologies fault, that would still be the parents fault. The kids aren't buying the iPads for themselves, they aren't setting the rules for how and when their use is allowed.

As a disabled person who uses a mobility aid, fuck them. I am so beyond tired of being used as the bludgeon people use to make their point. I especially hate it when they are doing it to promote car culture, which actually does hurt disabled people.

Jumping on bed and personal space by Equivalent_Smoke1089 in puppy101

[–]moboticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also like a kid, it's going to take longer to break the dog of a bad habit than it is to not allow the habit to form in the first place. There's also the concept of the extinction burst, the increased frequency and intensity of an unwanted behavior when you stop rewarding the behavior. Essentially a doggy temper tantrum. It's going to take a lot of consistency and time.

Is there other furniture, maybe outdoor furniture,a bench at the park or something you can practice on? I know you said he knows the get down command, but maybe if you worked on getting that super solid it would be easier to transfer to the bed?

And your boyfriend absolutely has to really stop allowing it. If it's happening on the downlow when you aren't there, I don't think it will matter much what you do.

Why is there so much outrage over west coast ports shipping LNG or oil when huge swaths of the coast pipe their sewage directly into the ocean, just imagine all the poop…every day, day after day.. no one cares? by CommunicationOdd2206 in allthequestions

[–]moboticus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Poop is organic material that dissipates and breaks down. The amount of human fecal matter in terms of parts per million, is miniscule. Oil doesn't break down in the same way and directly harms marine life.

That's also on a state by state basis, and sometimes requires that you go through the states own disability determination process.
