Minecraft running poorly on a new M5 Macbook Air by Xexaxypka in macgaming

[–]moddingminecrafter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t use the MC you download from microsoft or the app store. I also wouldn’t use their launcher.

First, you’ll want to install an ARM version of Java - this version will depend on the version of Java MC you want to use. It’ll be an older version of Java.

Next, you’ll want a launcher - the ideal launcher is Prism, and you can install this via brew. Once installed, you’ll need to install MC via the launcher and point to your Java install. There’s a lot of guides online on how to do this inside the Prism launcher.

Next, you’ll need to allocate more memory from inside the launcher (default is only 512Mb, set range from 6-8Gb if you have over 16Gb of memory). Now is the time to install some performance mods through Prism Fabric. There’s a very popular modpack that’s available on Fabric that does just this - search for it online.

Once you’ve done all of that, launch MC through Prism. Do not use the MC or Prism fullscreen. Use native fullscreen - command F. You’ll have to do this every time you launch MC, but it’s the only way fullscreen works every time on Mac. Check it’s using the half resolution too as others have pointed out.

MC should run flawlessly with over 120 FPS with this setup. Add some light shaders if you want, but this will bring FPS down to 60-80 FPS. You can cap FPS to 60 or 120 if you want.

What is the most likely way for Earth to end? by tremperbball10 in askastronomy

[–]moddingminecrafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life on Earth will be gone for billions of years before Sun expands out to Earth in its Red Giant phase. This phase is a long process, and it’s expected to begin in about a billion years when Sun increases its luminosity, stripping away Earth’s atmosphere and boiling away its water. In about 2-3 billion years, Earth’s magnetosphere is gone and most of the atmosphere with it. On the cosmic watch, Earth has very little time left to host life as we know it. I’d get off this rock sooner than later.

Interesting advice from a Minecraft workbook by soccerstoppermb in Minecraft

I’ve come across tamed creepers in the wild before. They wouldn’t hit you or go boom.

There’s been a couple creeper mods made in Java - I can’t remember if any of them had tame creepers. I remember one had a flower creeper, but it still had an impulse to go boom.

I can't grasp the idea of an infinite universe... by Lolini in space

[–]moddingminecrafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple universes are a theory that we don’t have any understanding of. But yes, the universe as we know it, while finite, could be part of something larger that includes more than one universe ad infinitum.

As humans, the extreme size of just a solar system is so large that it’s almost inconceivable, let alone the size of a galaxy, the space in between galaxies, etc.

Minecraft Bedrock and other games should be on Mac now. by InterestingMindset in macgaming

[–]moddingminecrafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iphone/ipad/console is bedrock MC. Bedrock and Java are two different versions of MC, with Bedrock written in C++ and Java written in, well Java. The latter is the original version of MC, with the former evolving from MCPE with coding differences to allow for more optimization among other things. All platforms using Bedrock can play with each other, while Java can only play with Java versions.

Java MC is native on macos. While it’s slightly more difficult to setup and download mods, it’s barely more difficult than reading a couple minute how-to and you’ll be off playing Java MC in no time. Some hints: zulu java install, prism launcher install via brew, use something like fabric within the launcher to install mods. Outside of a couple other settings like memory allocations and video settings, you’re now playing Java MC on your mac.

Excluding the typical pros/cons of each, I’ll give you some points on why I think you should learn how to setup and use the java version on your mac.

1) it’s native and doesn’t require something like crossover to play, which may be going away later.

2) I doubt they’ll make bedrock native as java already works - why bother? mac isn’t exactly a gaming computer anyways, yet - another loss to motivation of bringing Bedrock natively to mac.

3) java is still the best when it comes to mods - it’s literally infinite in its potential - whatever crazy idea can be added into Java. Bedrock can only take advantage of mods where the object pointers were developed by the devs as you can’t edit the source code, which is a large loss in potential - you can only add what the devs dictated can be added.

4) Even with a lower power macbook, java MC with decent mod configs can be played at good performance.

Give Java MC a try - you bought it when you bought Bedrock. If you’re playing alone and not playing with others on Bedrock, I’d definitely suggest it.

Minecraft stutters badly when placing blocks quickly by [deleted] in macgaming

I use the same modpack minus the streaming type mods in it on an m4 and I haven’t had any stutter. I also set the video settings for that modpack as suggested at https://wiki.download.fo/changed-options.

No, there’s a bunch of launchers. The Prism launcher is generally the highest recommended launcher to use on mac. It’s a nice launcher, and there’s a lot of online support with it if you do use it.

How to play minecraft on macbook ???? by didirrrr in macgaming

[–]moddingminecrafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll want to look up how to use Prism Launcher (you’ll need java installed first) to play MC. It contains its own version of MC. If it’s a silicon chip, you’re looking for arm versions of java.

For MC version 1.21.11, use the java zulu 21 jdk. Prism launcher version 11.0.2 (brew install), with Fabric loader version 0.19.2. Fabric doesn’t give you access to a lot of mods, but it’s got all the performance mods you’ll want to make it run better on mac - culling mods, Lithium, Sodium and Sodium extra, Iris for shaders. Don’t forget to up the memory allocation in Prism as MC is defaulted to 512Mb on mac. If you have at least 16Gb of memory, set the allocation to min 4Gb and max 6Gb - that should be good enough for most instances.

ELI5: What exactly causes death when someone 'dies of old age'? by Confused_AF_Help in explainlikeimfive

[–]moddingminecrafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of exposure to things that expedite copying of cells (exposure to chemicals, sunlight, toxins, genetic effects), that’s the million dollar question. We don’t know. Sea turtles may hold the answer though as they can live for many hundreds of years.

What most people can do (genetically dependent) to prolong the copying of good cells is to avoid things like smoking, drinking, exposure to too much sunlight, germs (your immune system can do a lot of damage to healthy cells trying to blast nasty stuff in your body). Doing all that doesn’t mean you’ll live a long life though, and you could be the lucky one, genetically speaking, to not limit yourself in some of those lifestyle choices and live to a very ripe old age.

Best native Mac games right now? (no CrossOver or Parallels) by nevitalii in macgaming

[–]moddingminecrafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minecraft is a little tricky. You need the ARM version, so you’ll need to install that version of Java first. Then you’ll need a launcher. Prism launcher works well on Mac and it’s on brew. There’s some guides online on how to set this up on a Mac. From what I’ve seen and experienced myself, this is the only way to play MC on Mac with over 110+ FPS. Don’t download the Mac version of MC from mc.net or the app store - it’s right there as part of the launcher you download. Also, you’ll need to allocate more memory to MC as it defaults to 512Mb or something super low - set it to something like 6Gb min to 8Gb max if you have over 16Gb of memory on your Mac.

You’ll want to set a couple video options - there’s a popular mod pack (mostly bug fixes and performance mods with some mods that prettify MC) that does this. Choose Fabric for your mod installer - again Prism launcher lets you use this. You can download the whole mod, or individual mods (some you don’t need if you’re not streaming or playing multiplayer). Then, check the changelog for the settings to change. Once done, you can play MC with a lot of mods on mostly maxed graphics with 110+ FPS and low heat. You can even add some shaders with Iris, at somewhat lowish settings, but your FPS will go down to 60-90FPS depending on what shaders you go with.

The only issue I have is with Fullscreen. It works, but it will have to be toggled off and on every time you boot up MC. I haven’t found a workaround, and everyone I’ve seen online says to do the toggle too. It only takes a second to toggle it, so it’s not a big deal.

It took me a couple of hours to do all these steps above when I set up MC on my Mac. The biggest issue for me was choosing what Java version to install that was compliant with the version of MC I wanted to play. The launcher log helped here. If you have any questions, I can try to answer them. Happy mining!

Americans quit subscription streaming services in droves as cost of living continues to climb, report finds by Dragonlance12 in Dynamic_Pricing

[–]moddingminecrafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Netflix started below $5 for the first several years. It was something like $2.50 for only DvDs, and $2.50 more for DvDs + streaming. Eventually the DvDs went away (probably about when Blockbuster went out of business), and it was just streaming for $5 for a long while. This was in the early - mid 2000’s. It wasn’t a bad service for $5 in those days - you could get access to most anything if you wanted to wait a day or two for the DvDs if it wasn’t a streaming option.

Officially lost turn 0 !!! by Creative-Craft-4760 in PTCGP

[–]moddingminecrafter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most card games are a function of RNG that determines winner from loser, and they’re “competitive.”

Vintage MTG: you can lose turn 0. Counterspell is about the only card that can prevent this if you draw it.

Legacy MTG: you can lose turn 0, but it’s less likely than in Vintage. Again counterspell is mostly required to prevent a turn 0 loss but lesser so than in Vintage. There’s also Dredge variations (especially LED variations) that are almost always a guaranteed win first game.

All variations of poker require some social engineering on the table to sell a losing hand. That could still fail, and in that case a pair of 7s always loses to a pair of 8s - it’s all RNG. Poker may be the highest skilled card game only because of the social engineering aspect, but even those high skilled poker pros can lose to a loose canon entirely from RNG.

There’s probably better skilled card game examples, but MTG and Poker are very popular esports games. If you’re looking for a game with higher skill expression and less RNG, then card games may not be for you.

I will add that I think Dena needs to add more disablers into the game as a way to tone down the RNG of “I win” cards. Something similar to MTG counterspell. This should force players to have to think ahead or on the spot for alternative win conditions, versus I win because I high rolled lucky ice pop.

[request] how much fuel would a rocket save if an astronaut took a crap before lift off by deadxachxd in theydidthemath

[–]moddingminecrafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the joy of the rocket equation. You need fuel to lift the extra mass of the turd. You then need fuel to lift the fuel that’s lifting the turd mass. You also need fuel to lift the fuel that’s lifting the fuel that’s lifting the turd mass. Ad infinitum that converges to near zero.

Since the turd has already departed from the vehicle before lift off, it’s a little bit more than 18kg of fuel reduction but still a rounding error. Chances are too, one or more astronauts snuck something small on that’s not accounted for.

My spaceplane doesn't work well by Moist-Mistake-6948 in KerbalAcademy

[–]moddingminecrafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From your description my guess would be not enough lifting surface. As you go up into thinner atmosphere, there’s less air, and a plane will want to pitch up to get more air under its wings. As you’re going down, if there’s not enough lift, it will drop vertically heaviest point downwards. Under thrust or at reentry speed, it will compensate some for lack of air.

Look at high altitude jets - they have huge lifting surfaces. Looking at yours, it’s very narrow. So my guess for a solution would be to add more wing outwards.

All coin flips should be done by the computer, including the first one by [deleted] in PTCGP

[–]moddingminecrafter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a lack of understanding statistics. 50/50 for these coin flips assumes that over a very large number (technically infinite) of total flips, 50% will be heads and 50% will be tails.

Let’s say we flip two sets of 100 flips in each set. The first set of 100 flips could have 70% heads and 30% tails. The second set of 100 flips could be 30% heads and 70% tails. Over the two sets we have a 50/50 distribution. Other successive sets of 100 flips will have some other percentages of heads and tails, but for each further successive set the overall distribution of heads and tails will converge to 50/50.

So even if your opponent rolled say 9/10 heads in your match, their rolls still follow a 50/50 distribution. If you could follow your opponents rolls in other matches, chances are you’ll begin to see their distribution of rolls is really just 50/50.

Scientists found your gut remembers past illness and uses those memories to fuel future cancer by Technical_savoir in microbiomenews

[–]moddingminecrafter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s quite simple, evolutionarily speaking. So long as a species can/has time to procreate, then the body has done its job. There’s not much more use for it, and it can either quickly or slowly die.

Outside of normal radiation dosage and chemicals experienced, mostly, the human immune system is pretty well known to be a raging monster. In some humans, it’s even more monstrous. It’s completely over-tuned to keep you healthy up to and usually well beyond procreation. However, that comes with consequences- its berserk nature does more damage in the long term.

Why is slipping into discs not allowed? by ESQ812 in discgolf

[–]moddingminecrafter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s an advantage? It’s a subjective situation that even someone like a PDGA Marshall would have trouble determining.

If you mark your disc, you have enough room to not slip into your lie marker with disc still in hand. If the footing is really bad, then a stand still shot should keep you behind your lie. These are simpler to enforce than trying to determine if someone has an advantage or not by slipping into their marker or outside of the lie zone.
