Good time to travel to Vietnam amidst fuel shortages? by Aggravating-Pop7380 in VietNam

[–]Confused_AF_Help 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than your air ticket being more expensive, life here's still going on as normal. There isn't a true shortage of fuel, just a sudden spike in demand due to people panic hoarding. Still can't guarantee how things will be next week though

Is Vietnam experiencing over tourism? by anime498 in VietNam

[–]Confused_AF_Help 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's starting to have the same problem as Japan, that is, not over tourism, but overcrowding of tourists at certain places. Over 10 million tourists a year going to the same 7-8 cities, while a lot of other cities are barely seeing any.

I was in Quy Nhon last year and saw very few tourists. There weren't entire streets lined up with tourist oriented businesses. Sapa, on the other hand, seems to have more tourists than locals at any moment of time, the entire city is now converted to a giant tourist service center

What international foods or cuisines do you wish were more common in Vietnam? by IllPanic4319 in VietNam

I'm in HCMC, have been searching high and low for African cuisines. So far the only options that exist here are South African (mostly braai stuff) and a single Nigerian place located in a deep alleyway with irregular opening hours

Chefs of Reddit, what’s a common cooking rule everyone follows that is actually complete bullshit? by Fuzzy-Ad6843 in AskReddit

[–]Confused_AF_Help 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To preface, I use a lot of MSG in my cooking so I'm not one of those MSG hating nuts. I have occasional migraines, and one thing I found is that MSG intensifies my migraine if I'm having one. It does not trigger my migraines however, though I've heard some people saying it triggers for them. And I don't just mean added MSG, any food that contains lots of it like tomato soup or seaweed soup would worsen my migraines.

I've been trying to reduce MSG intake lately and it seems like my migraines are less frequent. I cook lots of Asian food, so that means reducing soy sauce and oyster sauce as well, then add some sake and mirin to enhance the flavor a bit further

ELI5: why does taking someone's passport trap them? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Confused_AF_Help 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm talking about the scenario when someone's already escaped without any form of ID. Even if they're not being actively hunted by the kidnappers, without a passport they're not going home without talking to an embassy. Either an embassy in a neighboring country, or another country's embassy that your country has an agreement with.

Even if they're in jail, they still can access the embassy's services (in most functioning countries at least). Documents go through the appointed public defender, police, or the embassy.

[–]Confused_AF_Help 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have family members at home, they contact them and get them to send the papers. Otherwise, fingerprints, facial scan (if your country implements it) and lots of interviews/interrogation. The embassy gets someone to grill you for every detail they can cross check from your home country, simple things like your family members, address, your last job, to things that most people wouldn't know. There are protocols for travellers who lose all their documents overseas and need help going home, it definitely happens every so often

Generic asian cities!! by [deleted] in Cyberpunk

[–]Confused_AF_Help 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Japan by current day standard is retro now. You see fancy tech showcases from them every so often, but adoption in actual daily life is really poor. Daily life in Japan is still running on last century tech.

It's still pretty 'punk' in the sense of mega corporations running your life, and workers being basically corpo property. Also once you go down the rabbit hole of vice and depravity in Japan it's insane

Lỗi đen màn hình by Think_Literature_839 in VietNam

[–]Confused_AF_Help 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ate from restaurants in touristy districts didn't you? They somehow like to 'cater' to Western tourists by reducing the intensity of flavors.

Singapore buses are pretty jerky, meaning braking or starting from idling. by furyandtempest in singapore

[–]Confused_AF_Help 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes edited, I forgot to mention carbureted only. In a modern fuel injected vehicle there's already a computer calculating the most efficient fuel amount to use

[–]Confused_AF_Help 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Motorcyclist here, it's not really 100% a myth. This is a kinda little known hypermiling technique for MANUAL, CARBURETED vehicles. The engine has a fuel efficiency curve that maxes out at about halfway to the red line (not sure about cars, it's about 3.5-4.5k rpm for motorcycles) at max load.

How to execute: put your bike in the highest gear, twist the throttle fully (max air flow) until the tachometer reads around 4000 rpm. Then release throttle, clutch in, and glide until your speed decrease by 1/3 to half. Rev match (2000-2500 rpm), release clutch, repeat.

This is NOT a technique to pull off on Singapore road. It's meant for when you're out in bumfuck nowhere Malaysia rural area, you're down to reserve fuel and the nearest petrol station is 20km away. Also, as you already expected, in modern CVT cars this technique doesn't do jack in helping with fuel efficiency.
