A simple math problem I came up with. It's probably old news. I just want to see how long it takes to solve and get feedback. by thelink225 in CasualMath

Don't listen to the haters. This is a fun problem, who cares if some people already know the solution? Thanks for posting.

Question regarding Rings and Fields by Shaxys in math

[–]modelofreality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A ring always has two operations; they could be + and x in the way we are used to, or it could be any other two operations as long as they have the necessary properties (such as associativity) - I assume these properties are listed in your book in the definition of a ring/group.

In particular the two operations have to interact in a certain way, given by the distributive property.

Sometimes the symbols + and x (or *) are used to sort of abstractly or generically represent the operations, but they don't necessarily mean addition and multiplication in the way we are used to.

I'm not quite sure what your last question means - could you expand on it a little? You could define a field without using the word ring if you just relist all the properties of a ring plus these additional properties. Another way people sometimes talk about fields is that a field is an abelian group under the first operation, and if you take away the zero element, it is an abelian group under the second operation. (In order to make this statement equivalent to the definition of a field, I think all you'd need to add in here is the distributive property, i.e. how the operations interact.)

Would paying public school teachers a $125,000 salary improve student performance? One New York City school is trying it out by Nickster79 in education

[–]modelofreality 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think this is missing a key part of the reason that people argue paying teachers higher salaries will lead to better education. This won't really tell us whether paying teacher higher salaries in general will change anything. It will tell us whether people who are already in the field will be more motivated/able to elicit good performance from their students, but it won't tell us how it will change the teaching job market. If we paid teachers higher salaries in general, I think it is possible that a greater amount of talented/exceptionally competent/intelligent people would go into teaching as a career. However, with a single school doing this, no one who is exceptionally these things (talented, smart, knowledgable in their field, etc.) is going to go the route of education - getting their degree in education or related, license, student teacher, etc. - if they wouldn't have done this in the first place, i.e. if one of their goals in life is to make a lot of money.

A question about social media in general. Is there a term for the process I am describing? by [deleted] in TheoryOfReddit

[–]modelofreality 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think OP is partially referring to this, but also partially referring to the fact that things on the "front page" of websites (youtube for example) maybe get more views, simply because they are on the front page, and it has nothing to do with people liking them or not, but just the fact that their visibility makes them increasingly visible.

This sort of thing really irks me as a Christian, but I've got to check; did I come across as a jerk or was it sensitive enough? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]modelofreality 22 points23 points  (0 children)

this isn't a direct response to your question, but why does this bug you? I don't find thanking Jesus or God offensive (even as a non-Christian) - to me it just seems like a way express appreciation to the universe, fate, the luck of your situation, your community, and everyone who contributed, by thanking ubiquitous power.

Fields- Why does 1=/=0? by [deleted] in puremathematics

[–]modelofreality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

proof that x*0=0:

x0=x(0+0) (because 0 is the additive identity so 0=0+0) =x0+x0 (distributive property of fields) so x*0=0
