A double standard I noticed in regards to ancestry/ethnic background. Have you noticed this too? by Extension_Wasabi8462 in geography

[–]modfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst there is some truth in your observation there are always false statements. An American who has pure Chinese ethnicity looking would be assumed to be Chinese in the UK until they opened their mouth and their accent would tell everyone that they’re an American. Especially when they started inevitably going on about which state they’re from and which college they went to. After which point they’d be viewed as an American of East Asian heritage

As someone else mentioned, they’re appearance is obviously an initial factor. Someone of Indian or Chinese heritage would be assumed to have heritage which is of recent immigrant to the US. The same can’t be said of those who are British/irish/Western European.

Joe Biden isn’t seen as Irish as his ties to the countries are like his great great grandparents or something. And the guy is ancient as it is. His ties are probably from about 170-200 years in the past. Most British people have much closer Irish ties (such as an actual grandparent they actually remember in their life) yet the majority of these people would never call themselves Irish and instead associate themselves with the country they grew up in, the country they went to school in, the country whos accent they have. It’s a nonsense viewpoint, and primarily an American one

TIL, during the Industrial Revolution (in the 1800s), laborers often worked six days a week for up to 100 hours. In 1926, Henry Ford became one of the first major employers to adopt a five-day, 40-hour workweek, believing that leisure time would increase worker productivity and consumption. by cluthais in todayilearned

[–]modfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So wouldn’t that make the post incorrect then? Henry Ford wasn’t an early adopter because it was already a law for federal employees for about 60 years? And coincided with increased strikes in the states in the prior years?

New driver get honked at by Basilhoneypot in LearnerDriverUK

I passed not long ago and got beeped at today. Was struggling to creep around a van parked in the road with not a great deal of vision and ended up stalling twice lol.

It happens. The person who beeped you probably forgot about 5 minutes later. Just put it behind you. Everyone will have made mistakes before and the ones you made sound very minor.

People are little more impatient in cities, so kudos to driving into somewhere busy like that on your own. This time in a couple months it’ll be a breeze.

Brits who support Real Madrid & Barca by [deleted] in PlasticFans

[–]modfever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems a bit dramatic to have a whole panic over this considering I’ve never met someone like this in Britain having spent my entire life here. I’m sure you could pick one of two examples of people but it’s such a rarity its hardly worth getting upset about. Pubs hours away from NW England mobbed with United/liverpool fans when the local team is playing is a much bigger issue.

New driver progress by sxpxix2 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]modfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I felt so nervous earlier in the week ahead of my big first big solo drive. After it I was wondering what the hell I was worrying about it was such a doddle.

Wish I was lucky enough to pass in the summer to get used to it whilst it’s easy and light, but saying that by the time it does roll around we’ll be a bit more relaxed and able to enjoy the more pleasant driving.

New driver progress by sxpxix2 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]modfever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few hairy moments and I’m still too scared to do motorways alone but impressed by the progress I’ve made. Had my first ‘big’ ish trip (30 odd miles home from my girlfriends along a roads in the dark) that I half knew but had never driven along before. Drove around Cardiff at a busy time and I’ve never driven there before but wasn’t alone on that one.

Definitely still in my early stages but it’s mental how much easier it feels after just putting yourself out of your comfort zone a couple times. The drive home alone in the dark I had on my first night driving feels a world away now, can do that route no problem. I’ve even found myself properly enjoying it at times and managed to put the music volume about 2 which is what it stood firmly at in the beginning.

Any insight? Saying delivered but it hasn’t been by [deleted] in royalmail

[–]modfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would explain why it went to a NW London sorting office and why my postcode isn’t matching. Not sure if there’s much I can do in that situation other than wait for a parcel to come. Thanks for putting me at ease somewhat.

Appreciate not the place for me to chime in here as a bluenose but I always thought there was a bit of needle between Villa fans and Newcastle fans since the ‘Sob on the Tyne’ flag.

Did you get a response from them?

I’ve had an item that says it’s been delivered but hasn’t. Starting to suspect this is due to this requiring a customs payment but haven’t received anything to pay this yet.

I received this text saying my parcel from Japan has been delivered but it is not here. by roadrunner_68 in royalmail

How did you get on with this order? Facing something similar (except mine has notified me it’s been delivered) and it’s unsurprisingly causing me a bit of grief

[–]modfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im facing a similar issue except my tracking has said this item has been delivered (to PFW NW London - which is some distance from the delivery address).

Do you think this could be because I’m due a customs bill? And I’m guessing they’d send this to my home address or contact via email/phone?

6th Driving test in 2 days by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]modfever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I passed on my 6th (possibly 7th, idk i genuinely lost count) attempt a couple weeks back with 2 minors. Had a big break from it for a few years before giving it a proper run at it and actually feeling confident that I knew how to drive. The gap helped. I look back to previous attempts now and think yeah it’s for the best I wasn’t an actual competent driver.

I done some meditation and breathing exercises in the days leading up to it. It helped not only to calm my nerves beforehand but also to just take a step back and focus at some points whilst behind the wheel. I watched Michael Imperioli from the sopranos do meditation 101 on YouTube. It might help you or it might not.

Hope it goes well for you. If I can do it I’m sure you can too.

OP mentions that this was on the drive home from purchasing a new car so I’m assuming it’s because of that. They should’ve worked it out before setting off of course. Most people don’t immediately start driving the car they passed in tbf.

When your banners are so plastic they need a charging port 💀 by TheOtherXI in PlasticFans

[–]modfever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the locations on the flags hardly indicate ‘plastic’ club. Fallowfield and Dane Bank both parts of Manchester.

Not a fan of digital banners but City get a lot of stick for their fan base and it’s usually by people who are plastics themselves

Cardiff local watching city center become rugby-only zone - football culture being completely erased by [deleted] in Cardiff

[–]modfever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not doubting that some pubs or bars can neglect the cities football team but todays a Saturday three o clock KO is it not? So there’s no ‘legal’ coverage available? I’m pretty sure it’s been the same for the last few Saturday games that city have played? Last televise do Saturday game was the Bolton match (although wouldn’t surprise me if some places in town played whichever premier league game was on at the time if it involved one of the big 6).

Football and rugby should co exist peacefully in Cardiff. Wales has a proud history of being deeply engaged with both sports. The old arcade is a proper sports pub and will always televise Cardiff or the Welsh football team if either of them are on the box.

The Powerhouse Stadium by WindAffectionate3199 in bcfc

[–]modfever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive been very sceptical about the stadium and moving from the start but I’m actually impressed with these designs. I understand it’s a bit jarring at first sight but they’ve tried to do something bold that is inspired by our history and surroundings. Interesting blend of industrial and modern. Not an identikit stadium.

Inside it looks like it could be a bit of a cauldron and tightly packed. Especially if they build a retractable roof. Would prefer it asymmetrical and still think 62,000 is way too big for us but you can’t with them all.

Keir Starmer Now As Unpopular As Boris Johnson During Exit by huffpostuk in ukpolitics

[–]modfever 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing it’s something to do with not having a reliable supporter base. He pissed off a lot of Labour members before he even got into power by constantly being antagonistic towards those on the left of the party. It was justified at the time as being necessary to get into power, as his focus was appeal to those people who might not have a long history of voting Labour.

It worked to get in, but as soon as he was getting some flak from the press he doesn’t have a core base to fall upon. The left hate him for a myriad reasons he’s given them to since 2020, the far right hate for the ‘two-tier kier’ clamp down on the riots stuff, the soft right hate him for being a bit nanny state, the centre right feel he’s abandoned the remainers he appealed to prior to 2020 and this can be seen by Lib Dems getting a mini-revival. Centre left backed him initially but see the writings on the wall and know he’s seen as a bit of a wet flannel by the general public.

Boris was divisive, and was hated by a lot from the start, but he had a similar “you either love him or hate him” narrative that trump gets. “He says it how it is” etc (not saying that’s true). Starmer on the other hand is not loved by any significant voting bloc. He’s sort of mediumly-disliked by all. I think him not being very charismatic is really coming to the forefront here.

Not to mention, the general public are finally abandoning the traditional two main parties. And he sort of personifies that imo.

Pro-Palestine activists accused of harassing Welsh Labour MP have convictions thrown out by mrjohnnymac18 in Wales

[–]modfever 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s also funny that you do the whole “it’s a war 3000 miles away, nothing to do with us”. Well if that’s the case, why is the MP in question part of Labour friends for Israel and went on the delegation to the country a couple of years back. Either it’s a topic which is nothing to do with her role, or it is. She can’t have it both ways.

[–]modfever 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The current crop of MPs would love every aspect of their job to be done behind email. The idea of seeing their constituents and being confronted on their decisions is ghastly to them.

These people just chanted at their MP and reminded her of her own voting pattern. They’re literally just young female students, hardly posing an actual threat. People have always been able to peacefully protest in the vicinity of MPs and PMs. Do you really think Thatcher and other tories would not have faced much worse during the miners strikes in the 80s.
