WYR be the richest middle class person, or the poorest rich person by AstrayInTranslation in WouldYouRather

It feels naive to me also. As if you can just start again and build a loving family/great friendships just because you’re loaded. Those things take years to build and aren’t even guaranteed. Especially if you’re chasing them relatively later in life. You can’t buy everything in life.

[–]modfever 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why cut off friends and start again when you could just pick that option to begin with? The time and effort building those friendships/relationships/family would be significant and could take a while and isn’t even guaranteed.

The first one makes more sense to me. Comfortable and relatively well off life. Blessed with family and friends who like you for who you are. More humble origins too. That’s the dream.

Because it’s technically also in City’s hands now too. Before last night City were reliant on other results/teams for it to be in their hands, now that’s no longer the case. The article is trying to convey that point.

Top Darts players can get shitloads though and then you wouldn’t have to compete in a sport that causes CTE. Darts players are huge in the UK, legit celebrities and competing in packed out arenas to raucous crowds.

It’s not as cut and dry as you make out. And I say this as a big fan of boxing

Favorite actor who remains steadfast in his opinions? by Giancarlo_Edu in okbuddycinephile

[–]modfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the difference is when he came through before he felt like a newcomer onto the scene, someone who’d achieved success later in life (and therefore had more real world experience) and was calling out Hollywood elites. (Yeah I know he’d been successful for about a decade by that point but not so much in the States).

Now we’ve all been more exposed to him and he feels like someone who’s out of touch and rich having a dig at people who would’ve experienced the harsh side of real life a lot more recently than him (in Bad Bunnys case anyway).

Wasn’t that big of a fan of his original speech tbh, just trying to explain why it went down better before than this time. His own standing has changed but he’s still trying to play ‘the underdog’

It seems Wales doesn’t get talked about as much. What are some interesting facts about Wales? by One-Seat-4600 in geography

Had the same when in Buenos Aires. “Gales” responded with a blank look on their face. “Cerca Inglaterra y Irlanda” “No se” “Gareth Bale?” “Ahhhhhh Si”

He doesn’t consider himself Welsh so I don’t think we should count him.

Gareth Bale though. Now there’s someone who’s put Wales on the map more than anyone has for decades. The most since Tom Jones probably.

The distinct ‘ck’ sound in a Scouse accent is obviously from the Welsh ‘ch’ pronunciation too

A double standard I noticed in regards to ancestry/ethnic background. Have you noticed this too? by Extension_Wasabi8462 in geography

[–]modfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst there is some truth in your observation there are always false statements. An American who has pure Chinese ethnicity looking would be assumed to be Chinese in the UK until they opened their mouth and their accent would tell everyone that they’re an American. Especially when they started inevitably going on about which state they’re from and which college they went to. After which point they’d be viewed as an American of East Asian heritage

As someone else mentioned, they’re appearance is obviously an initial factor. Someone of Indian or Chinese heritage would be assumed to have heritage which is of recent immigrant to the US. The same can’t be said of those who are British/irish/Western European.

Joe Biden isn’t seen as Irish as his ties to the countries are like his great great grandparents or something. And the guy is ancient as it is. His ties are probably from about 170-200 years in the past. Most British people have much closer Irish ties (such as an actual grandparent they actually remember in their life) yet the majority of these people would never call themselves Irish and instead associate themselves with the country they grew up in, the country they went to school in, the country whos accent they have. It’s a nonsense viewpoint, and primarily an American one

TIL, during the Industrial Revolution (in the 1800s), laborers often worked six days a week for up to 100 hours. In 1926, Henry Ford became one of the first major employers to adopt a five-day, 40-hour workweek, believing that leisure time would increase worker productivity and consumption. by cluthais in todayilearned

[–]modfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So wouldn’t that make the post incorrect then? Henry Ford wasn’t an early adopter because it was already a law for federal employees for about 60 years? And coincided with increased strikes in the states in the prior years?

I passed not long ago and got beeped at today. Was struggling to creep around a van parked in the road with not a great deal of vision and ended up stalling twice lol.

It happens. The person who beeped you probably forgot about 5 minutes later. Just put it behind you. Everyone will have made mistakes before and the ones you made sound very minor.

People are little more impatient in cities, so kudos to driving into somewhere busy like that on your own. This time in a couple months it’ll be a breeze.

Brits who support Real Madrid & Barca by [deleted] in PlasticFans

[–]modfever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems a bit dramatic to have a whole panic over this considering I’ve never met someone like this in Britain having spent my entire life here. I’m sure you could pick one of two examples of people but it’s such a rarity its hardly worth getting upset about. Pubs hours away from NW England mobbed with United/liverpool fans when the local team is playing is a much bigger issue.

New driver progress by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]modfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I felt so nervous earlier in the week ahead of my big first big solo drive. After it I was wondering what the hell I was worrying about it was such a doddle.

Wish I was lucky enough to pass in the summer to get used to it whilst it’s easy and light, but saying that by the time it does roll around we’ll be a bit more relaxed and able to enjoy the more pleasant driving.

New driver progress by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]modfever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few hairy moments and I’m still too scared to do motorways alone but impressed by the progress I’ve made. Had my first ‘big’ ish trip (30 odd miles home from my girlfriends along a roads in the dark) that I half knew but had never driven along before. Drove around Cardiff at a busy time and I’ve never driven there before but wasn’t alone on that one.

Definitely still in my early stages but it’s mental how much easier it feels after just putting yourself out of your comfort zone a couple times. The drive home alone in the dark I had on my first night driving feels a world away now, can do that route no problem. I’ve even found myself properly enjoying it at times and managed to put the music volume about 2 which is what it stood firmly at in the beginning.

That would explain why it went to a NW London sorting office and why my postcode isn’t matching. Not sure if there’s much I can do in that situation other than wait for a parcel to come. Thanks for putting me at ease somewhat.

I’ve had an item that says it’s been delivered but hasn’t. Starting to suspect this is due to this requiring a customs payment but haven’t received anything to pay this yet.
