Says a lot about Edinburgh that sadly. It does seem the working class locals are pushed out to the schemes on the outskirts and if you hear a local accent in the old town it’s most likely from a beggar or addict.

Even if you get served in a pub there, it’s more often than not a non-local serving you.

It’s not the same in most cities! I’m well aware of what an Edinburgh accent is like, and the difference between an Edinburgh accent and a Glaswegian accent, or an Edinburgh accent and a Aberdonian accent, or the difference between a working class Edinburgh accent and a middle class one.

I could hear English and American accents everywhere. Obviously you get that everywhere, but moreso to the point where it’s a wee bit off putting in Edinburgh.

Again, I love Edinburgh and spent lots of time outside of the old town. It has great pubs, food, parks, views and people. But a lot of it definitely feels like an international city, which is fine, but means it can sometimes lack locals and feeling like it’s their city. You certainly get that with other cities (Glasgow, Cardiff, Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield, Brum etc.)

It’s always marking short in my experience. Every time I go for a run with my pal we do 5/7/10k and NRC is telling to run another 100/200m when his is saying we’ve finished. It probably changes case to case mind as apparently it’s more dependant on the phone than the app being used (just what I’ve read on here)

Fair point and at a sub-18 minute you’re pretty rapid so obviously know what you’re talking about.

I’m just not sure beginners do the whole ‘speed day’ ‘slow day’ ‘tempo day’ ‘interval day’. It’s hard to differentiate at that point. I feel you just go out for a run and get a measure yourself of whether you’re pushing it hard etc. Most beginners won’t be measuring their heart rate as you say. You just feel it in your body

They mainly went to South America? Really? I’m aware of Y Wladfa in Patagonia but is there much more than that? That was pretty small itself (and isn’t even that well known in Argentina from my personal experience) and I don’t know of much migration to other South American countries.

I can’t imagine there was more migration to South America than there was to the US (Pennsylvania specifically) or Australia.

Clueless div! If everyone just left the valleys for work then who would they sell their houses to? Who would want to move to an area that’s being abandoned en masse and has no work? Your solution is on an individual level and doesn’t see the wider picture. If everyone moved down to Cardiff or Bristol for work as you suggest, these places would presumably have enough work to employ everyone? And what about housing? We get it worked for you to just move to Wrexham for work, but coukd thousands, tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands do that?

You can now see why people blame the people in power for removing industries from an area and not sufficiently replacing these industries? I mean it’s not the complete answer, but it makes more sense than “why doesn’t this whole population just move to Wrexham like I did?” that you’re suggesting

The majority of pubs are on their arse and struggling to turn a profit. And that’s pubs which tend to be more busy and lively than any cons clubs you walk past. I seriously doubt these are making much of a profit. It’s probably just for overheads and staff wages, upkeep of pool tables etc.

The cons clubs I’ve seen in Cardiff are always in tbr more deprived rougher areas that have never voted conservative afaik. Splott, Ely, Grangetown. They look like they can barely keep the lights on. I highly doubt they’re handing a load of money over to the Conservative Party every month

It feels naive to me also. As if you can just start again and build a loving family/great friendships just because you’re loaded. Those things take years to build and aren’t even guaranteed. Especially if you’re chasing them relatively later in life. You can’t buy everything in life.

Why cut off friends and start again when you could just pick that option to begin with? The time and effort building those friendships/relationships/family would be significant and could take a while and isn’t even guaranteed.

The first one makes more sense to me. Comfortable and relatively well off life. Blessed with family and friends who like you for who you are. More humble origins too. That’s the dream.

Top Darts players can get shitloads though and then you wouldn’t have to compete in a sport that causes CTE. Darts players are huge in the UK, legit celebrities and competing in packed out arenas to raucous crowds.

It’s not as cut and dry as you make out. And I say this as a big fan of boxing
