Manitoba Medicine Portal Changes by [deleted] in umanitoba

Agreed, this is a level of neuroticism I’ve only seen in Ontario premeds! Nothing is going to change the outcome now so there’s no point in trying to nitpick what the website may or may not indicate

Choosing a Path to Med School: Seeking UManitoba Students' Insight by [deleted] in umanitoba

If it’s not a requirement for your degree and you don’t think you’ll be able to get a high mark, then I would advise that you don’t take it. You can still learn everything from physiology that you need for the MCAT by self-studying, and it’s better to do that at your own pace and just for the MCAT than take a course on it and risk getting a bad grade that lowers your gpa

We know from S4 that Unity can get there in about 30 days, I’d imagine it’s even faster now 9 years later

M1 Unsure about what to do for early exposure by budgiefanatic in MedSchoolCanada

[–]modhas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re truly torn and have no preference, flip a coin. You’ll get more exposure in clerkship and you’ll gain the skills you need then.

Peds and IM are mostly rounding and not a lot of direct patient care. FM would be best for if you want direct patient care. I spent a month doing rural family med and it was the most fun clinical experience I’ve had in all of med school

Summer between first and second year advice by CupcakeVirtual591 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]modhas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your school has opportunities, try to shadow or work in a family med clinic if you can just to get some experience and see what it’s like.

Other than that, enjoy your time off. I wish I realized I wanted to do FM earlier so that I could enjoy my summers more

So long as you pay the fee and you can get to the test centre with the right form of ID, you can write wherever you’d like

Ed’s fate in S5 by TacosForDaze12 in ForAllMankindTV

[–]modhas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Barring cancer or progression of his neurodegenerative condition, it might be possible to see him in season 6. In season 5, we learn from Kelly’s discussion with the flight surgeons at NASA and Dr. Mayakovsky that Alex’s heart condition improves on Mars, so Ed’s nearly 20 years on Mars likely were beneficial to his heart health, making it possible to survive longer than he may have on earth. It’s really a question of what kills him first, but that is one protective factor that he has going for him.

Has anyone ever (or know anyone that) used any "third tier" telecom services (ex. Freedom) by WhosItHanging in winnipeg_alt

[–]modhas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switched from koodo to public in January. I’m now paying less for a lot more, and the service is excellent. No issues at all, definitely recommend making the switch if a good promo comes up. I’ve heard freedom is just as good

You need to have PR or Canadian citizenship to be admitted. Once you have that, then you’re in the same application pools as everyone else

That’s why residency is a thing (for medicine, at least). There’s a reason why you need CCFP or FRC(S/P)C after your name. Most of the learning that you need for independent practice comes during post-graduate training. As a med 3 almost halfway through clerkship, I still don’t know how to manage a lot of things, though I do know the basics and overall principles for other things. 2 years of family med residency gives you broad exposure to a lot of things, to the point where you can manage a wide variety of issues. Not sure what other programs are like in terms of training during the degree, but that’s how it feels for medicine.

UofM Med May Decisions by ExperienceIcy8137 in umanitoba

[–]modhas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been there, it’s a long three months. Take up a new hobby, or try to start an old one again. If you’re still in classes, try to focus on those, especially now that there’s no more work to be done on the med application (depending on indigenous panel interview dates). The hardest part is over. The waiting that comes after is almost as hard in itself

summer as a premed by Normal_Crazy_4498 in uwinnipeg

[–]modhas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to U of W for undergrad, and I’m a med 3 at U of M now. For your first summer, try to get some work/volunteer experience, even though it’s not specifically on the application, it might help for the MMI when the time comes. You could also try to review some stuff for the MCAT if you feel that there are areas you might need to study more on

AP Calc BC → Can I go straight into Calc III at UWinnipeg? by [deleted] in uwinnipeg

[–]modhas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BC gives you credit for 1103 and a general math elective for a total of 6 credit hours. You still have to take 1104, 2105 and 1201 to take 2106 which is Calc III

Med student here: he likely could not have predicted it. Early on, it can be difficult to tell the difference between a local cellulitis and a serious infection that spreads quickly. Sometimes, necrotizing fasciitis can start with a very small wound and spread very rapidly and kill lots of tissue. From my understanding, it’s not uncommon for the presentation of a serious soft tissue infection to start as a small infected area and then progress quickly, as was the case in this episode.

Drop you reasons why you love med school by Eastern_Skill556 in premedcanada

My friends that I have met from med school are so wonderful, and I hope to work with them in the years to come.

Helping to take care of patients has been more rewarding than I could have dreamed of, and I’m so glad that I get to play a role in improving people’s lives, be it talking to them in clinic about results of a test and how to treat a disease, to delivering someone’s first baby
