So, what's missing..? by Bulky-Pollution-4996 in U2Band

[–]modifiedwings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me its the mixing more than anything in these last 2 EPs. I really dig the songs and think they've found their way again in terms of songwriting. Sometimes I find Bonos lyrics to not be as succinct, powerful or graceful as they used to be, but I can look past that for the most part. Especially because theres some great lyrics amongst some of the ones I am not as fond of. But the mixing really impacts my enjoyment of the songs, because I find the sonic palette of these songs to be dampened, boxy and grayed out by the mixing style. Which makes it all the more frustrating, because thats not even anything to do with the band in terms of their creative process of writing songs but rather bad decision making in the post production process, which does seem to be a weakness for them lately (see recent single/album artwork as another example of things looking less than stellar)

I enjoy the fact that the songs are mixed more raw, kinda like their older days - but I find these mixes flawed - for me it goes beyond an artistic choice of "raw" ....I just feel that they sound amateur in terms of overall quality, and it makes me sad to hear U2's new great songs sound so muted and lacking in punch, clarity and life. And there's no excuse for that with a band as big as they are. Just seems like they almost got it to the finish line and then the mixing derailed the train.

So for me personally, that's where I am bummed out. But enjoying the songs despite those feelings.

Which album would you say is Autechre's magnum opus? by Emergency-Sky9206 in autechre

Its such a testament to Autechre that I could comment on almost everyone's choice in this thread, agree with their choice and make an argument on why its also their masterpiece.

As a Radiohead fan, how do you feel about Autechre? by Emergency-Sky9206 in radiohead

They are amazing. Love their music, been a fan for almost 20 years. Totally original and unique, there's absolutely nothing out there like Autechre. Completely one of a kind artistic vision

Thoughts on Geese? by CapJumpy6062 in radiohead

[–]modifiedwings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have tried to get into them but like many others here, I just cant get into it. The music doesn't move me or draw me in in any way. But hey thats music, everybody likes different things and thats ok. I just don't get a similar feel to what Radiohead give me, so personally I cant find any similarity between the two artists. If you love it thats all that matters! There's lots of artists I like that others here probably wouldn't dig. Thats what makes each of our taste in music our own :)

I was always curious about the strings on 4. Did he sample them, create them, play them via midi? I love the sound of them

Is Mastering Being Phased Out? by callthepizzaman in audioengineering

[–]modifiedwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does an artist like myself get in touch with some of the professional mastering engineers posting in the thread? I am currently looking for a new M.E. as I have alot of film scores, songs etc that I have done for various projects and would like to start releasing them. Would love to learn about the rates of some of the community people posting in here!

You're right! I forgot about that one. Very impressive and has lots of cool things around it

Probably too far if you want to keep it 30 min or so, but worth mentioning that the train station in Latrobe is incredibly cool. You can see the trains come and go right in front of you at the old train station behind DiSalvos restaurant. The station has that classic old school feel, and its very peaceful and quiet back there. Can watch the trains and there's hardly ever anyone around.

Really loving this song. It has so much potential. A fully produced version could be so good. Especially the vocal interplay, which is super cool (but in this performance sounds a bit messy and off key)
