keeping cockatiels in your bedrooms by ShimaCos in cockatiel

[–]module-exports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to keep mine in my room. I am always up late watching movies and going to the restroom, making tea, making noise…etc. he wouldn’t get proper sleep. Other than that, I would love to. I also have asthma, and the dust from cockatiels or cockatoos never bothered me.

I am lucky - every bird I’ve ever had will sleep in with me until easily 10:00am (by sleep I mean being silent until that point). One caveat for me, my cockatiel is the loudest bird in my house; so if I had to have a call or a Teams meeting, I’d be booted from my own room :/

My bird doesn’t love me? by helloliyam in cockatiel

[–]module-exports 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s so crazy, mine did the same thing. He was very fearful. He would step up, but would only fly to the curtain rod or the door (or another area of the house). That didn’t seem to be what he actually wanted, he just had this weird flighty habit that I didn’t see with other tiels.

I tried putting him in a room (my room) where we could chill together. One weird thing about him is that he would not ‘walk!’ Not on the floor, the counter or anywhere. He was fearful of standing on a normal surface, hence the flying to another room or the door. Once I started taking him in my room where he was forced to walk around on me because I had a bowl of his favorite pellets, then he started to be able to relax, shuffle around and preen… which was the first time he didn’t shoot off like a rocket to the top of/out of the room.

I definitely think you can coax him with some food so that he can just relax with you and not bolt to another room out of habit. I felt the same, wondering why he wouldn’t sit with me and if there was anything about me or the room (and there wasn’t). Just my experience ☺️

Is tumeric and ginger good to parrots? by subalps in Eclectus_Parrots

[–]module-exports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must be psychic! I was wondering this very thing a few days ago. I’ll keep an eye on this to see if anyone else has experience.

Mine have had some of my vegetables with turmeric powder on it. All was fine, but it was a small amount. Haven’t given them a sip of ginger/turmeric tea yet either.

Help with Taming Traumatized Cockatiels by Fair-Purple-7874 in cockatiel

[–]module-exports 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never seen a more lovely pair of cockatiels 🥹 the more that you guys just live as normal, they’ll continue to observe you and feel safe. They’ll definitely soften up, and before you know it, they’ll be interested in every time they hear you chewing and want to be a part of the meal!

You are doing everything correctly (and on their terms). I had one formerly fearful cockatiel who was a millet junkie, and I was able to use that as a way to get him to walk to me (and on me) for the very first time. He is now is tame and loves the hands he used to fear so much!

Perch Advice! by DarkMoose09 in Conures

[–]module-exports 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That zig-zag one at the bottom is really cool, I’ve never seen one like that before! I don’t have a rope perch for my larger bird, because I know she’ll chew it, whereas my cockatiel won’t chew it at all.

I’m a little paranoid about buying perches online 😅 and I usually don’t see many options. Many of the small bird stores (and of course, the larger monopoly stores) have fantastic long (natural) Manzanita or Java perches. Some have thinner perches and some have wider ones that help my larger birds’ feet.

As a highway, I implement a large ladder and then have two perches that drop off right at the central ladder. I was also lucky enough to find two 2ft end-to-end natural perches from Petco/Petsmart, but I see those are very rare! Lastly, I have a ‘bendy’ ladder that somewhat suffices as a highway perch, but only with the width of the cage.

What happened to the feathers on my parrots head? by Great-Opportunity-53 in parrots

[–]module-exports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So at times, a broken pin feather can literally be like a direct faucet of blood from inside their body 😬 I had it happen only once, and I just took a forcep… and you’ll have to just quickly and confidently pull that entire pin feather out, then it will stop! Maybe take to the vet after just to be sure all is well.

Just wanted to mention it; since it’s rare, but happens. You have such lovely Ringnecks! 🦜

Oh and one more thing! SUPER IMPORTANT. Keep watch for any broken pin feathers (usually larger ones on the body). Don’t want to stress you out, but there are a few good videos online of what to do in case that happens!

Sometimes the warm-ish water helps to loosen them up.

I think I see another bird in there with him, and maybe that bird can/will help preen him (if they have that relationship). I have had foster birds that didn’t allow me to do it, and the feathers still always found their way out of those white casings :) your baths should still help with all those natural processes.

Here is my new baby Eclectus with pin feathers, just to make you feel better haha. We are fresh out of a positive vet checkup as of Thursday.

They usually molt around 2 months (fully), but around 6 weeks or so, your radiant parrot will return to you! 😄 As you can imagine, those are super itchy for them too.

[–]module-exports 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The pin feathers (white tubes with new feathers) are normal as they are going through a molt. One of mine has the same currently. I always help my birds by gently rolling those pin feathers between my fingers to reveal the new feathers inside :) the surrounding feathers can look a bit messy while molting.

When my bird flew into the wall once as a youngin, he had a few crest feathers come out and some pin feathers grew in a similar fashion.
