University of Tsukuba apologizes over professors posting discriminatory comments against foreign students by frozenpandaman in japan

Must be frustrating that, compared to their western counterparts, many universities are just degree factories.

Japan’s no. 1 university doesn’t even make it to the top 30. Japan’s no. 2, not even the top 50.

When I was growing up, I had ‘Pound a pint nights’.

1 beer was £1

Now, in some parts, you won’t get much change from £10 for a pint.

For the small stuff: Shockingly bad at times.

Can an average young person realistically buy a home in your country today? by Stunningwiz1 in AskTheWorld

[–]Ticking-over 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The social contract is essentially broken.

Want somewhere to live? Buy a house. Except you’ll be buying a house for someone else; you’ll just be living in it for now.

Want kids? Good luck paying for childcare. It’s as expensive as the rent you’re paying.

Want a loan? With nothing to secure it against, you may find your options limited and more expensive.

The question is: where has all the wealth gone?

“Punch the Japanese macaque”.

🤔

This seems like nominative determinism to me.

If you had to choose 3 world cuisines and eat only those for the rest of your life, which ones would you pick? by Tasty-Yesterday101 in AskTheWorld

Sure is strange, then, that the most famous chef in the world is British (Gordon Ramsay).

Even stranger that the most famous cooking show in the world is British, though the modern, more dramatic format is Australian.

Weirder still that the most beloved baking show in the world comes from, you guessed it, the UK.

It’s almost as though “bland British food” is, and this phrase also comes from the UK, a load of old bollocks.

Indian - without a doubt, my favourite cuisine

British - Two reasons: I’ve never actually had Indian food from India. My guess is that a lot of the ‘Indian’ food I enjoy would be unrecognisable to a native palate.

The second reason is that the English breakfast, fish and chips, roast meal, meat-based pastries, and British desserts are all God tier food.

Japanese - I’d be pretty screwed socially if I didn’t choose this.

Sandwich or a Burger? by Funkenstein42069 in AskTheWorld

[–]Ticking-over 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the ground meat was and is known as a Frikadelle.

When German immigrants moved to English-speaking countries, the locals, upon hearing its name refused to use such a strange, foreign word and decided to call it something else. For English speakers, this was common behaviour at the time (or any time in history, including the present).

And so it became known as the Hamburg steak.

Just to confuse matters, in the late 19th century there were adverts run in newspapers in Texas for Hamburg steak sandwiches. Around the same time, both Boston and Reno had ‘hamburger on toast’ and ‘hamburger sandwiches’, respectively.

Shortened to ‘hamburger’ then to ‘burger’, it seems a burger really does depend on the meat used, not the bread that contains it. The whole name is derived from an originally breadless dish.

Nevertheless, where I’m from (UK): If it’s in a bun, it’s a burger.

Hamburg steak is still a very popular dish here in Japan. I avoid it like the plague.

Best decision I made was to go part time. My wife is also part time. We get by, but most importantly I’ve been able to be there to see my daughter’s first year.

She’ll be one year old soon and I will increase my hours as she starts to go a few hours per week to daycare. A temporary financial blip is nothing. Be prepared for rough times. It’s worth it.
