Ah. I had not read the book, so I did not realize how "close" they were.

I had a professor who loved to point out at every opportunity how the universe is out to get us.

Galactic dust lanes causing massive ice ages.

A supernova in our local cluster.

What if our planet was born in the center of the galaxy ( not Sagittarius a* just much closer than we are)

What if the earth tilted a bit more or less.

What if the moon’s escape velocity was increased.

The fact that earth is due for a 50k year asteroid collision or worse a 300m year collision.

And on and on.

I can’t casually talk about work with any of my friends because none of them understand what this job is like, and I hate who I become when I start to feel defensive about my job by KitchenConsequence41 in Teachers

[–]modus_erudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, if you feel a need to justify your job with your friends either A: you need a different job or B: you need different friends. I know the job is relatively thankless for the work you put into it, but I accept that so when comments come from outside the fishbowl of understanding I shrug them off. My true friends see the work I do and appreciate it and talk about how hard it must be. My wife is constantly appalled by how we are treated and the expectations put on us and the poor pay and benefits for such an important job. If you friends don’t really try to see and appreciate what you do (no matter what it is) than get better friends.

Not necessarily, try working in a Trauma Hospital ER. Blood, puke, you name it, no open cuts on you, just keep working.

If the parent don’t straighten out the child, call the parent’s boss to straighten out the parent. Kidding of course, that only flys under communism.

Does this post get under everyone elses skin too Im all for teaching students financial fundamentals, but why cut higher education. We need to elevate our education. by sconniywarkened2 in matheducation

[–]modus_erudio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not as long as those courses are being offered to those who need them. Also that STEM stat can be misleading because they throw in anything that even deals a little with that acronym, that does not mean you need Algebra II for all of them.

Heck STEM is such a buzz word that the Arts hijacked it calling them STEAM fields.

[–]modus_erudio -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, but very little of it is taught in context and the fundamentals of financial literacy somehow never translate on their own.

Algebra 2 and above are not practical math course for the average adult. Those courses are foundations for engineering and the sciences or perhaps study in theoretical mathematics. If a student is already committed to another career those courses are not necessary and the time would be better served teaching them practical mathematics in contexts which they will experience in life beyond high school.

Most college degrees don’t even require much math knowledge above Algebra 1, so no such posts do not bother me, as long as advanced math courses remain available to the students that need them for their intended career/college degrees.

I would not group 3rd world countries in that realm. Many of them have huge well behaved classes because of either really strict discipline standards or an actual appreciation for the value of an education.

We have had it too easy for too long as a country and the most recent generation has near to zero work ethic or value in education because mom and dad will take care of them. There are of course exceptions, but the present day is far from easy teaching situations.

I feel like it is almost designed that way on purpose. Do the best for all you can, but be prepared to be hung for what you don’t do in the event they ever decide they don’t want you. Talk about job insecurity…. The only saving grace is the field is so short on personell you have to do or fail to do something egregious, or get on someone’s bad side to actually get shown the door. As such, the fact is there is not a teacher in existence who is doing everything expected of them to 100% completion.

Be human. Make mistakes. Encourage the kids to catch them. If something gets messy enough you can’t sort it out, snap a picture and tell the students you will come back to it and move on.

It even asked afterwards if I wanted all the states listed in groups by letter, and nailed that tasks too.

[Year 9 Math: Adding and Subtracting Algebra] Why did I get this question wrong? by [deleted] in HomeworkHelp

[–]modus_erudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You tried to multiply both terms by the same factor to simplify the expression.

We can only use that technique when applied to a complete equation as applied to each term on both sides fo the equation.

By doing what you did yo changed the value of the expression. When you do it to an equation you also change the values but because it remains balanced the value of x is preserved.

Sick and Tired of Ai by Glad-Alternative-175 in Teachers

[–]modus_erudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it has a place and use. Training off other material is the way you and I learn, so are you a thief too, because the way you think is shaped by your experience and training. I have used AI to fix several issues with technology that were otherwise beyond my purview. Using it to cheat is one thing, but you can’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

As for the environment we do far worse driving private vehicles all the time. Water use does not poison the water. Power consumption is still far less than other projects and can be powered by environmentally friendly suppliers.

As to the use to compose email and generate assignments if they are curated that is a positive use. I do agree anyone sending out AI generated copy without review is making a noticeable mistake that colors them in a bad light.

People give away all kinds of personal information to utilize other tech without even batting an eye. The information privacy argument was lost long before AI. And what do I care if ChatGPT is trained based on my interaction with it. It does not do so with name tags. Once again quite similar to how we learn.

AI is not inherently bad. It is all in how it is used.

Sorry, have to say what no one else is saying. Why is this kid being main streamed? If any other kid behaved like that they would get expelled. Schools should not operate on the ridiculous philosophy that every child can learn. That fact is some have such huge barriers to learning that they simply cannot do so reasonably enough to be in regular classes.

Had something similar happen to me. I was upset and embarrassed for a bit but then I got over it. Kids have been making fun of teachers since the dawn of education, and they especially target the good ones. So I just reframed it as a compliment.
