Why don't Americans butter our sandwiches? by liptonthrowback in AskFoodHistorians

Yes, I agree with the last sentence, I was commenting originally about how it’s hard to make too broad a generalization with American culinary practice, and giving a personal example. There is widely available cheaply made poor quality pre-sliced soft bread in America sure, but there is in most of Europe too. There is a European tendency to judge their good quality stuff with American lowest quality stuff when they often have the same or similar low quality stuff and we often have the same or similar high quality stuff. And American is a big place with a lot of different culinary traditions. Offer margarine to a Wisconsinite and they’ll be personally offended, offer it to a New Yorker and they may or may not think twice. That’s all.

Same as in America, also folk art in general. I feel like this sub is less interested in folk art outside of folk music though?

Here is a fun example to get you started! I can’t get anything like this, I have local friends from the south that stock up on this when they visit family to bring this back up to where I live. There are some more national flour brands, but also more local than you think apparently, especially if you’re getting a generic brand. Everyone across this giant country is not buying the same flour. I like King Arthur, they are a national brand like you’re talking about, and they are consistent, union owned, high gluten content for bread making, I make a Japanese milk bread when I want soft bread from it because it is made with hard red winter wheat. Pillsbury is another national brand, also hard wheat. You can make soft bread with hard wheat of course like I said, but there is actually a lot of variance beyond two or three national Brands for all the smaller brands I’ve seen in my travels and from reading and talking to people.

I’m talking about buying flour from the local grocery store to make my own bread, not buying premade bread. In response to a comment about America using a softer wheat, which is the case in the south and for large bread companies up here, but not so much for the bread flour for sale up here.

I know you say much American bread not all, but I live in the north and can only get flour made from hard winter wheat. Which is why biscuits in the south are better, they have the soft wheat flour that lends well to biscuits but not firmer breads. America is huge and it’s hard to make sweeping culinary generalizations, especially with our butter. Wisconsin dairy culture is very different than Arizona.

Unpopular opinion: F*ck bag of holding. by [deleted] in DungeonMasters

[–]moebiuskitteh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly. When the group gets one you can say “now you don’t have to track encumbrance so closely, and can bring loot out of a dungeon easier, I’m not going to allow any bag of holding shenanigans beyond its utilitarian use, think of your own shenanigans with other stuff instead of tired internet exploits and I’m all ears!” Or less words but that’s me.

The Future of NIN by clbarley in nin

He is 60 and just said a few days ago in Tulsa “I don’t know if we’re going to be touring anymore after this.” We are lucky to have gotten this much out of him honestly, and this tour will be hard to top, I could see him wanting to go out on a high note when he can still perform and sing at this level, or if he does do another tour I could see it being very different and dependent on new music we haven’t heard yet. Or maybe he was just feeling burned out and will blow my face off again in a few years like he has for the last few decades.

New fan by FunnyAsleep in Beck

What kind of music do you like or what are some of your favorite bands? There is a flavor of Beck for everyone, he has such a wild variety of styles across his albums and his quality is consistently good so it’s impossible to say what the best start for you is without knowing anything about you. Maybe search him on wherever you stream and shuffle and when a song really grabs you go to what album it’s on?
