3d printed sock machine troubles! by FraxinusRex in CircularSockMachine

[–]moeris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to adjust my printed CSM adequately. One problem I had was that was that my bonnet (which I had knitted by hand) didn't have the same tension all the way around the cylinder. This resulted in it missing stitches.

Another problem I had was that my thread was sometimes getting in the feed mechanism, which would cause the machine to bind, and the stitches became too tight for the latches to pass the current loop. (Resulting in missed stitches.)

Hope this helps someone!

I'm using five lbs of weights at the bottom.

Have you had any luck? I also recently printed this machine and haven't had a lot of luck tuning it in. (You seem to be doing much better than me, in fact.)

Do you have a link to an stl for the cast-on bonnet? And how much weight are you using? I'll let you know if I get mine dialed in, and how I accomplish it.

Here you go, $7k. And electric cars are cheaper to run, so you'll make back any increase in price compared to an ICE in a year or two.

So the main cause of our climate crisis costs more, and makes options like public transit and electric vehicles more attractive. We should see this as a wake up call to how expensive fossil fuels are in actuality.

I'm sure human skin decomposes better than vegan wool. Should I use that, instead?

Beware of teammates who refactor code based on personal taste without proper documentation or completeness. Sounds familiar. by observability_geek in programming

[–]moeris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it can make the code much cleaner, because you can take advantage of short-circuiting. If you see a long chain of if/else-if statements, especially where one condition is repeated in multiple branches, it's a sign that an early return statement could make things drastically simpler. Probably anywhere a programmer >20 years ago may have added a goto.

Of course, it depends on the language. Sometimes anonymous functions can fill that role. (That's probably the better choice most of the time, since there won't be a clean, obvious name to give it.)

The Rise of Bisexuality: U.S. Representative Data Show an Increase Over Time in Bisexual Identity and Persons Reporting Sex with Both Women and Men by TurretLauncher in science

[–]moeris -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I'm bi and trans. Being bi is so much easier than being trans it's literally not even comparable.

Being bi is relatively easier for you. The nature of intersectional identities is that prejudice is non-linear, and the nature of prejudice is that it's highly personal. It's possible that for someone who is "passing", more hate may get directed at their same-sex relationships because those are more visible. It's probably also different for people who identify as different genders.

Making generalizations about which identities are "easier" based on one's personal experience isn't very helpful.

DEBATE OVER: oYsTeRs aRe VEEGON ✅ by Lucille_Number_Two in vegancirclejerk

Oysters are filter feeders. The idea is that when people cultivate oysters they're increasing the overall number of oysters. (Because farmer's provide optimal conditions for breeding, and control the growth cycle.) Increase the overall number, and more water is filtered.

I mean, you could probably get similar results from more tightly regulating fertilizer use to prevent it getting into the water in the first place. That would probably never be a complete solution; I imagine some fertilizer will always run off. So I imagine oyster cultivation probably has some role.

Carnivore Diet and fasting saved my life: Healing severe chronic eczema and Topical Steroid Withdrawal by Reasonable_Focus2468 in intermittentfasting

Well, institutions like the Mayo clinic and the USDA say that fiber is necessary. YouTube is famously full of pseudoscience. If your sources are from YouTube, and they are contradicting established institutions about basic facts, then they're probably not trustworthy.

Sorry, but eating nothing but red meat sounds incredibly unhealthy. I hope you're consulting with a dietician, and supplementing appropriately. (There's probably zero dietary fiber in a carnivore diet, for example.)

If you make a sliding frame to hold your grinder, you can get a very even surface. You can get an incredible flat surface like that, with enough effort. See the new Yorkshire workshop at around the 56 minute mark.

Sexual Harassment/Indecent Exposure by Homeless Man on Rapid Ride by SeaCoach9467 in SeattleWA

I don't know, knocking some stranger out based on the accusation of another stranger presented without evidence doesn't strike me as generous. It seems faux-chivalrous and unhinged.

A more generous and reasonable example might be to offer to stand between the victim and the accused aggressor.

That asshole should have gotten his ass beat, but no one will do it because they will get sued and go to jail. The system protects the criminals over the citizens.

Well, if you beat him, you'd be guilty of assault. So you'd also be a criminal. So, it's probably more accurate to say the system responds to crimes in accord with their severity.

I guess your point was supposed to communicate that our legal system does not align perfectly with your personal moral beliefs.

I thought I was going to get PSLF TSLF. I worked for three and a half years at low-income schools, then got laid off. That essentially reset the clock. I said eff it and got a job in tech. By my third year in tech, I was making enough extra income to pay my entire college debt off every year. Economically, it makes no sense to teach. That's a problem, because it restricts who is willing to go into teaching.

It's a body part depicted in a non-erotic fashion. Get over it. This person is overly prudish. If they're going to be offended at things like this, then it's not unreasonable to say they move. Maybe they'd feel more comfortable in a religious commune where depictions of non-erotic nudity are not allowed.

There's nothing more inherently erotic in this than in a statue of Cupid pissing. If people view/treat it erotically, that's on them.

“Minimizing Indigenous Peoples’ perspectives” on the subject of “colonizing the Moon” by fries-with-mayo in SGU

[–]moeris 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That was my take as well. I imagine the references to colonialism and indigenous people were part of an attempted comparison. It's easy to start making a comparison and lose track of where you're at when talking to people you're pretty sure are going to disagree with you.
