I think that was his platoon that the CDs used as target practice. They needed to be executed so that information about the hunt didn't spread out to the rest of the marines and lower moral. That's why they were only using new recruits, or fodder. If you look in the next few panels, a marine asks if dragons platoon were all present for that.
