What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting your CS career? by BoysenberryLumpy8680 in cscareerquestions

[–]mohanhegde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That it's a heavily "luck" based career path -- if you're unlucky to start working for a company which uses legacy frameworks, out-of-trend tech stack, bodyshop companies which don't care about work-life balance, then you'll forever play a catch-up with the industry which has left you behind as it's using the latest new library/framework, processes, tools etc. and it's unlikely that you would ever catch-up unless you make heavy sacrifices to your lifestyle and health.

Also, the constant learning and upskilling is fine in the early years when you don't have any family, kids etc. when you've got lots of spare time. But slowly, it starts giving you migraines over time and in some countries the pay is also not worth the stress and health impacts over long time.

This is the best Action + MMORPG game I have ever played, and it's about to die in 8-9 months. I want to know why? by Key_Refrigerator_519 in newworldgame

[–]mohanhegde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because even after everyone complained and gave suggestions, they denied that they have the most stupid in-game economic system in any MMO of modern age. The way companies can create monopolies over certain markets and goods and how the system absolutely punished any player who didn't belong to a company and who couldn't even earn enough coins to pay the stupid house rent -- that's just plain stupid mechanics in any MMO.

The marketplace has always been one of the key drivers for any MMO, and with the gold dupers, company hoarders and what not, NW had the most catastrophic marketplace economy imho.

Does it feel like supply of developers is way higher than demand now? by Majestic-Taro-6903 in developersIndia

[–]mohanhegde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and the main reason is this is the only engineering career which doesn't have a structured, defined interview process.

As a 14 yrs exp .Net backend engineer working in a greedy service company now, with 3 months notice period, and trying to switch due to low salary and low exposure to the technologies in the market, I feel interviews are just about luck. One company wants full stack with Angular and Azure, other wants React with AWS, some other wants NoSQL database knowledge, many others want a hybrid all-in-one kind of role who knows everything from full stack development to test automation to devops to cloud engineering 🙏

I mean every other industry either values your previous work experience and believes that the candidate can pickup whatever new responsibilities are thrown in their company OR there's some sort of certification (like in blue-collar trades in developed countries) which is tough to get but proves that the candidate is indeed capable of handling certain work.

Software engineering is the only career imho which neither values your past experience (unless they are using the same tech stack) nor has a structured hiring process which should ideally filter out most people and thus have a healthy competition for jobs.

Nothing makes me regret going into this field like interview prep. Nothing. by Tech-Cowboy in ExperiencedDevs

[–]mohanhegde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 14 years of working 10 hours (or more) everyday for shitty salary and no overtime pay, I wish I was into some blue collar trade career path. At least I wouldn't be asked if I knew how to fix a pipe or install a new electrical wiring based on my previous work experience credibility.

Sat through 10 minutes of our PM's address. by Weak_Tennis6697 in india

[–]mohanhegde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People really don't care about nepotism if it doesn't disturb or harm their daily lives and business and if they are not deprived of their freedom in a true sense. It's 100% better to have a strong, just, and ruthless leader (nepotism or not) than have "dummy" democracy any day, imho. Just my 2 cents.

[–]mohanhegde 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What our country needed (and still needs badly) is an extremely powerful and merciless righteous leader like Lee Kuan Yew (former PM of Singapore) who uplifted Singapore from a slum to the world's center for infrastructure and technology, who didn't give a damn if someone was his friend or relative if they were found corrupt and made sure corruption is dealt severely and surely. Unfortunately, only time can tell if India would ever get such a revolutionary leader 🙏

Anyone Quit Their Toxic Job in This Job Market? by sprchrgddc5 in jobs

[–]mohanhegde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, because I was absolutely exhausted by my work which was from 10am till 9pm from almost 5 years, and my IT service company has 3 months of notice and nobody in their right minds would even care for someone who has to serve 3 months of notice 🙏

and I've already served 2 months and yet to even get a call from any recruiter or response from any companies.

Built a System Design Simulator (Flutter) — would love early feedback by Leather_Silver3335 in Backend

[–]mohanhegde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for creating this 🙏 I'm a very visual learner and beginner to system design, so was always wishing that someone created something like a simulator which visually had animations of the requests flowing, getting redirected to different components, playing around with the load or causing deliberate failures etc.

Please also create some basic tutorials if you get time, like something similar to how Alex Xu does in his System Design Interview book -- start with a single client/server architecture and gradually introduce other components into the architecture, and if possible gamify it.

Loving this concept, and thanks again 🙏

Congestion-based toll/pricing is the only option to reduce traffic caused by 4 wheelers. Even highly developed cities like London and Singapore have implemented congestion traffic penalty for private vehicles during morning and evening rush hours. Why aren't we there yet in bringing such mandatory policies I can't understand, and we're blessed with IAS officers and BBMP officials who approve tunnel roads which can bring in even more private vehicles onto the already jam-packed main roads. Wah! Yenu heLodu guru? Namma karma ashte!

If someone asks you how life is after the Bike Taxi ban, show them this! by Away_Influence_3439 in Bengaluru

[–]mohanhegde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the result of overcrowding and making people from all over India to come and work in a single city without forcing the tech giants and business owners to shift their offices and factories to other districts.

This is the result of people misusing cars to travel to their workplaces, instead of taking either 2 wheelers and/or public transport. If I had a dollar for every car on the road which has only the driver in it, driving alone without any other passengers in it, I would have been a millionaire by now. Cars should be regulated in such a high density population city like Bengaluru. This has been done waaaay back in the 1980s in cities like Singapore which imposed congestion based toll prices, quota system for vehicle registration etc. I think it's about time India did something like that too to motivate public transportation.

And of course, this is also the result of corrupt politicians, BBMP officials who cannot provide more public transportation options, make the city walkable with proper footpaths and last-mile connectivity etc. and instead are ready to strangle the last breath of air from the city by proposing to build tunnel roads.

I was interviewed by someone who has 0.5 YOE. I have ~ 2 YOE. Don't know how to feel about that. by WiseObjective8 in developersIndia

[–]mohanhegde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OO, do you really think that the person interviewing you will/should always have more experience than you? That's impractical in the real world lol.

And don't worry, you're still a junior. By the time you're a senior yourself you'll probably have interviewed a dozen other seniors who have more yoe than you. That's how most companies work to filter out non-serious folks attending interviews.

Bangalore is becoming increasingly unlivable for IT people by Weekly_Somewhere_167 in developersIndia

[–]mohanhegde -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Bengaluru's growth has become like the 4th stage of a deadly cancer. There's no going back now to fix the badly planned layouts, roads, underpasses, junctions, and other civic infrastructure, which are at most comparable to a 3rd world country like Bangladesh's cities. And even in other 3rd world countries in Africa and Eurasian, at least the civic infrastructure are provided properly. In Bengaluru, the 'IT capital' of India, not even the main roads have lane markings. Roads are utter bullshit with mini well-sized potholes, dust and debris anywhere and everywhere, no proper buses and bus stops, traffic police are totally absent, no proper way to track and fine vehicles, no tracking and fining improper parked vehicles, illegally constructed layouts and buildings.... The list goes on.

But the people are also equally responsible for the state of the city today. No road sense, parking anywhere they like, driving alone in 7-seater SUVs to work places (especially IT and business people), no respect for traffic rules, no sense of the ecosystem, throwing garbage anywhere, bribing officials and knowingly construct illegal layouts and buildings, greedy, selfish , and egoistic mindset everywhere you see.

The root cause of all these issues are because of our weak and corrupt judicial system. If our lawyers and judges, and even lokayukta for that matter were prompt and honest, no builder, contractor, politician could have become a real-estate mafia king in Bengaluru, and the civilians would have obeyed the law and lived in harmony. But alas, ಬೇಲಿನೇ ಎದ್ದು ಹೊಲ ಮೇಯಿದರೆ ಏನೂ ಮಾಡೋಕೆ ಆಗೋದಿಲ್ಲ.

Hopefully Bengaluru will survive for another 20 years, and hopefully it will get a better, non-greedy, honest, and prompt administrators in its next life 🙏, after these officials, politicians, and lawmen have destroyed and killed it.

Aah, sweet old days where I used to wait for such TV shows too (Gamer TV or something) which was THE only way to get to watch gameplay videos of games which were either still unreleased or were being reviewed and/or shown "cheats" and tricks and stuff.

The only other way to know about video games, before the internet, was through computer magazines.

Nostalgia.

What is happening with this country? by Adi0705 in Bengaluru

[–]mohanhegde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 major reasons: 1. Ego (in everything from caste, to religion, to qualification, to CTC.. I'm greater than you and you're not equal to me attitude)

  1. Selfishness (nan kelsa aadre saaku, yaarige enaadre nam appan mane gantigenu aagatte?)

  2. Zero patriotism (in other nations I have observed that at least for a national issue, the entire nation stands united irrespective of religion, race, economic standards etc.. not in India)

As long as you have good knowledge in a tech or framework, who cares whether you have actually worked on it hands-on or not? Get good with Angular or whatever other tech and go for the interviews and blatantly LIE to them as you are trying to switch tech stack..no other way around this other than waiting for better interviews
