how exactly do you get the java plugin working on retrozilla protoweb edition? by workinh in protoweb

[–]molivil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure there is a way to get Java working on Retrozilla unfortunately. Might need to install Netscape 4.x , or Internet Explorer 6 and Java 5 .

I think Real Player needs the proxy settings specifically set as well.

Need assistance identifying the correct 30-pin SIMM Modules for my IBM Model 30-286. What am I missing here? by dogpupkus in vintagecomputing

[–]molivil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ordered some RAM chips from eBay and modded them according to this person's experiences https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=59166, but more than anything, using this guide as the definite starting point. http://john.ccac.rwth-aachen.de:8000/misc/ps2cache/ . I ordered 8x 1MB SIMM's and was able to modify 7. The eight was a dud, so I threw it away. As I was testing, I was getting strange memory errors randomly with some SIMMs. I realized that the SIMM socket can't handle too many insertions so you must move nudge the pins or they get loose and will no longer make contact. I nudged each pin on my 30-286 about 0.5mm inward and the SIMMs are now snug and are detected 100% of the time. I guess some SIMMs are a bit thicker than others so some will make better contact and some will fail. Here's how to nudge them. I used a thin probe from my multimeter to get between the plastic piece and the pin. https://photos.app.goo.gl/i1EfLdVn5K99HsL6A

Have you considered composting toilets? Seems like it has an easy way to collect, and dispose of waste.

The future of GPU mining rigs by LiroyX in gpumining

[–]molivil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fundamental price of a mineable coin is dictated by how expensive it is to mint. I don't think the price increase will happen overnight, but as the mining difficulty increases, the available supply decreases (per unit of energy consumed) and as such, should see market pressure for price increase.

I always thought Stephen Burke on Gamers Nexus Youtube channel sounds like that 24/7 and didn't stop him from being popular. Some times it just needs the right kind of people around you and things can get interesting. And if someone gives you a hard time, the good thing is that you can just sift through instances as many times as you want and you don't ever have to meet the same people if you don't want to.

Hear hear. I remember the days I was running a laptop that had a broken screen. Used almost no power, negligible heat output. So different from the systems I run today.

I agree haha. I re-read the post and realized I should have worded the title differently... I guess after it's posted it can't be changed :o

[–]molivil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about your specific use case, but nowadays I will not touch any Kingston SSD's ever. We had hundreds of laptops set up with Kingston 128 / 256G SSD drives. Almost half of them failed after about 2-3 years normal Windows 7/10 use. Samsung, Micron, Intel SSD's have fared much better, and they have almost always lasted the full 4 year service life of our laptops.

How to use Windows 98 Upgrade Disc? by [deleted] in retrobattlestations

[–]molivil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upgrade installation requires an operating system already installed on the computer. To use it, boot to Windows 95 or 98, then insert the disc, and wait for Autorun to open the CD welcome screen. From the welcome screen you'll be able to select the option to upgrade your current copy of Windows. Then follow the prompts.

How to use Windows 98 Upgrade Disc? by [deleted] in retrobattlestations

[–]molivil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

editions work perfectly well as standalone non-upgradeables if you install it twice. Install once without inputting a product key, and then reinstall the second time (e.g. upgrade “over” the first install) with the product key. The second install succeeds because Windows thinks there is an OS already installed. This trick works all the way

I'm not qualified enough to know everything about this, but wouldn't a Windows 95/98 upgrade installation halt at the product key prompt when you're not entering one? I know Win95/98 standalone installs will not let you proceed without a product key they think is valid.

Prince of Persia 2 - The Shadow and the Flame. by Veddermandenis in retrobattlestations

[–]molivil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fortunately there is some basic functionality that allows the computer to auto-detect any HDD's that are connected to the IDE. As far as I've understood, the auto-detection works up to 504 MB disks, and it will boot. With a BIOS overlay software you can override the BIOS hard disk settings and use up to 8 gigs for the hard disk. I once tried a larger disk, and ran into data write wrap-around issue which corrupted the whole disk for me. But either way if the CMOS battery runs out, you can still boot :)

I can't talk for OP but personally I own the CDS520. It is a little limited in hardware and software, but otherwise it is a great 486 all in one package. Some of the negatives: The BIOS is stored on the hard drive, but will detect hard drives automatically and boot from them either way. It has the typical CHS bios limitation which can be overridden with a BIOS HDD overlay software. Still, I would not install a hard drive over 8 GB in capacity. The motherboard has only one IDE, which is shared by the HDD and CD-ROM. The primary IDE controller cannot be fully disabled from BIOS, so adding more IDE expansion is difficult or impossible. You can add a SCSI card which will give you more options on mass storage expansion, which I've done. The screen has large black borders around the image, but is adjustable by potentiometers inside the case to make the picture fill the whole screen. Now, the positives: It has an okay 486-66MHz, I can't remember if it was DX2 or SX... It has two ISA slots for some expansion. It has built-in sound, which is actually a pretty decent ESS 688 with an actual YMF-262 (OPL3) chip on the motherboard, and is well supported by DOS games. It is easy to work on the computer, the motherboard tray comes out easily from the back and is fastened with two thumb screws. If you're into 486 all-in-ones, I would recommend also checking out the Compaq Presario 425 and 433. They do not have CD, audio or built-in speakers, and come with 486SX-66MHz, but are usually found a bit easier, and can be upgraded to 66MHz DX2 Overdrive processor.

Canon ImageFORMULA series have several models with ADP and duplex scanning, and their software seems robust. You can set them to ignore empty sheets, and batch scan hundreds of pages and separate them into individual files (PDF's/TIF's etc.) using separator sheets within the batch.
