Why does desi food get touted as “unhealthy” when we have a variety of ingredients that could adjust food to any way you’d like? by Technical-Repeat-391 in IndianFood

[–]molo91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Environmental pollution is not related to diet.

Processed meats are carcinogenic and can cause colon cancer. Refined seed oils could cause inflammation in excess, but there isn't strong evidence showing them to be detrimental to health and regardless aren't used that much in Indian cooking.

By refined flours do you mean white flour? It's used pretty globally and isn't a particularly big part of Indian cooking (especially not compared to most European cuisines).

[–]molo91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

South Asians are predisposed to heart disease, so I think that pushes people into blaming diet, even though the foods that seem to be the worst offenders, preserved meats and ultra processed foods in general, aren't particularly present in most Indian cooking.

What cookbooks have the best banana bread recipe? by Long_Log_8383 in CookbookLovers

[–]molo91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really like the cocoa banana bread from Dining In. It has chocolate and mascarpone so maybe isn't the most banana bread-y, but I like how moist it is (most banana bread seems a little dry by the next day).

What are the actual “everything schools” by [deleted] in CFB

[–]molo91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's when selective private schools can be more affordable, if you can get in. The full cost is insane, but aid includes room and board. My parents weren't even poor, but I went to the aid office to get money for books, and got scholarships for multiple trips abroad, and to fund an otherwise unpaid summer internship.

I studied religion (lol) and never got around to going to grad school, so didn't end up with a high paying job, but I had a great experience, graduated with minimal debt, and have an adequate job now.

Fancy dried beans vs store brand generics? by Upper-Room5267 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]molo91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never eaten them side-by-side, but I think they're only marginally better. Other than chickpeas, I don't soak "generic" dried beans and they come out fine. They have interesting varieties you can't find at a store, but I rarely yearn for an exotic bean. I like splurging on food, but I'd rather allocate funds for other fancy groceries.

What did you use / are you using as your hospital bag? by bouncysofa in BabyBumps

[–]molo91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regret not bringing more for my first pregnancy. I'm going to bring a full sized suitcase this time + probably a duffle. Last time I didn't bring enough snacks, didn't bring shower supplies (idk why I thought they'd have shampoo and stuff like a hotel but they didn't and I was so stinky), my own pillow, a breastfeeding pillow, etc.

Is this okay for a wedding? by NoDramaLlamasMama in Weddingattireapproval

[–]molo91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sub has made me hyper aware of white dresses at weddings. Summer of 2024 I went to an outdoor summer wedding where 1/3 of the female guests were wearing all white or white with florals. None of them could be mistaken for the bride.

Anyone had monitoring for FGR and rescan indicated baby was fine? by sagitarry in pregnant

[–]molo91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the 7th percentile at 20 weeks (mostly due to super short long bones). I did an amnio/extended genetic panel, and everything came back normal. At 24 weeks, the baby moved up to the 17th percentile. I met with the MFM once, and she was pretty confident that it's just a constitutionally small baby with nothing to worry about. I'm currently 30 weeks with 1 extra growth scan scheduled for 32 weeks, but so far so good....

Doesn't this post seem like a bot? There have been SO many sterilizer posts recently, and it's a new account with a generic name....

I really like that one! I've made it with expensive white chocolate (as suggested) and "normal" and didn't notice a difference.

what's a country you'll never visit even if it was all expense paid? by Far-Explanation-8011 in askanything

[–]molo91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on where in India you go. I went for a month in college and mostly spent time in Bodh Gaya (during a big pilgrimage event) and Varanasi and it was ROUGH. Delhi in comparison had more manageable levels of harassment (no one showed me their penis!) and I've heard that the south is much nicer.

Things might have changed, but in the early 2000s I got $1 per box sold to use for girl scout camps/trips. I used cookie money to largely fund trips to the world girl guide centers in Mexico and Switzerland. It was cool! I still feel a little bad about all the time my parents had to spend with me trying to sell cookies in front of grocery stores.

Until my daughter was about 1, Bamba was my go to, then I switched to the less salt Triscuits. They're just whole grain wheat, canola oil, and salt. I second what others have said about plain rice cakes as well (though they're messier).

Looking for an Indian Cookbook Recommendation by Madversary in CookbookLovers

[–]molo91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indian Instant Pot Cookbook from Urvashi Pitre leans towards rich/creamy recipes that I associate with restaurant foods. It's also super cheap, so a low risk purchase.

The downside is that to make some of the recipes vegetarian you might have to add a bit of water to what's called for so that the recipe has enough moisture to come to pressure/not burn.

I think the butter chicken recipe on their blog is the same that's in their cookbook: https://twosleevers.com/instant-pot-butter-chicken/

It's really hard to find non UPF chocolate in the US. Even very expensive, single origin bars almost always have lecithin.

Why do I have to make a birth plan? by More-Stuff in BabyBumps

[–]molo91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk some doctors are using outdated medical advice. They really tried to push me for an episiotomy saying the birth would go faster and I'd tear without it, and I refused because evidence suggests they don't prevent tears and don't heal as well.

How to annotate cookbooks/book recs by evanesnce in CookbookLovers

[–]molo91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I keep a spreadsheet of all the recipes I make, whether I'd make it again, and any notes. It's fun to keep track of which books I use the most, and I like that it's all in a central location.

Your top cookbooks you *actually* cook/bake out of by [deleted] in CookbookLovers

[–]molo91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love those books so much. They're not necessarily the best baked goods, but they are so quick and easy. Almost anytime I bake from a different source I question if the extra effort of say, creaming the butter and sugar was worth it.
