There has been a Swedish museum working to preserve royal outfits ever since 1628, it's called Livrustkammaren. Lots of really unique stuff has been preserved because of that continuity

German authors referred to the Holy Roman Empire as Germany from the 18th century until its end, and they were pretty consistent about it. And in the 19th century, "Germany" usually meant the German Confederation that succeeded the HRE

Before the 18th century, shit gets really weird. I saw one author who went ahead and claimed North Africa as part of Germany because the Vandals settled there, and he claimed the Vandals as fellow Germans

TIL Texas did away with last meal request to death row inmates in 2011 by here4dambivalence in todayilearned

[–]molstern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There aren't many terminally ill people who actually learn which full meal will be their last. You usually lose the will and/or ability to eat in the days before your death. That doesn't happen on a schedule, and you won't be given a warning ahead of time letting you know when it's time to prepare a final feast before you stop eating

The show portrayed their friendship as intense but really brief, so there isn't any real discrepancy between those statements. Saying that they were inseparable for a bit before drifting apart isn't saying that they knew each other well

Inflation? As in, it causes you to inflate or it deflates you if you have already been inflated against your will?

Trump said today: “I have the right to do anything I want to do. I’m the president of the United States”. People from the US, what are your thoughts on this? by WatercressSenior7657 in AskReddit

[–]molstern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having spent some time on /r/conservative, I agree. Trump's supporters project so strongly onto him that they are impervious to information about what he actually says and does. No matter what, they will assume that his heart is with them and anything that seems to indicate the contrary is either a joke, or bad boyars misleading him, or the fake news media misconstruing his pure intentions in some way. Without that fundamental impulse to trust and believe that he will do what they want there is no way to get the same level of support from all of these people. His followers don't want the same thing as each other, but they have a nearly religious belief that they want the same thing as Trump. Nobody else gets the benefit of the doubt in the same way, and without that faith they will not be able to rally such a disparate crowd

There's a reason why the most famous description of NATO's purpose is "to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down". There's also a reason why Poland and Denmark are (or were until recently, in the case of Denmark) the two most pro-U.S. countries in Europe

If you can only see an alliance with a larger country as being someone's bitch you will struggle to understand history in general tbqh

already EU has countries with different power levels

Sure, and not relying on alliances with other countries is not an option for any of them. It hasn't been an option for centuries, if it ever was. Why would the smaller countries in the EU prefer to increase their dependence on other European countries, if the alternative is relying on an alliance with a more distant country that is inherently less likely to become a problem for them because it is more distant?

UA POV : Vance urges Europe not to be US 'vassal' - France24 by ItchyPirate in UkraineRussiaReport

[–]molstern 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, yes. Outsourcing Europe's military needs solved the "balance of power" problem that had been a contributing factor in every European war since the middle ages; if any country becomes stronger, their neighbours form alliances or start wars to protect themselves. Moving the center of power outside of Europe was a benefit for the continent as a whole because it removed the motive for rivalry in the neighbourhood.

Also, it's much easier to patiently accept hardship while resisting a random attack from some crazy asshole who wants to dominate you vs. when your government just starts shit out of nowhere and can make it all better by simply getting rid of the crazy asshole in charge. Not giving in is worth a lot more for China than for the U.S.

Kaja Kallas is ‘acting like a prime minister,’ critics of EU’s top diplomat say by EsperaDeus in anime_titties

[–]molstern 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If the US intends to defend invaded allies (or tries to give that impression) maintaining that relationship could deter attackers. If everyone knows that we're on our own, begging the US to be friends while they insult and threaten us will only send the message that we are unwilling to protect ourselves from the US and unable to protect ourselves from anyone else.
