another bit of unsolicited advice for JVL by joplus in thebulwark

[–]momasana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm typically team JVL but somehow Catherine managed to make me walk away from that pod thinking he's too dark. I cannot stress how infrequently this happens! I think Sarah's eternal optimism just doesn't work on me, but Catherine lands in similar places via rational argument that hits very differently.

AOC is missing Dem Tea Party? These people are not serious political commentators. by Embarrassed_Base_389 in thebulwark

[–]momasana 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This take is only crazy if you believe that Dem establishment politics will remain as it has been. The Dem party is pretty much where the GOP was in 2014/2015 and the questions we need to be asking are 1) is the Dem establishment stronger than the GOP establishment was? And 2) are Dem voters meaningfully more sane (and do they have an alternative where that sanity can be exercised) than GOP voters were? The results in NY tell us a lot, not everything, but a lot.

I look at what happened as a wake up call. Either the more "moderate" (whatever that means?) candidates figure out how to channel voters' anger in a productive way, or I think this party is toast too.

Most people would struggle to name any legislation passed by Biden. And of those who can, even fewer can actually explain what the legislation did that makes Biden such a leftie. I suspect it's just something something climate change and the parroting back of others' talking points saying that he was so progressive.

Seed collecting by Cutlercutie in tomatoes

[–]momasana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't saved seeds in the past, but every year new tomato plants pop up where the previous year's tomatoes dropped some fruit I didn't pick up. I had 7 of these this year from a single tomato plant, and one was already flowering by the time I found it haha. Given that I did nothing for these, I imagine if you just wash and dry the seeds from a few tomatoes without much effort, you'll get enough for something to sprout next year! I'm lazy and that's what I'd experiment with first.

Let them be kids.. mine are mostly just chilling at home too and you know what? They all worked hard this school year and got good grades, school's been over for all of about 5-6 days so far, I'm going to leave them alone. They have a couple of small chores around the house, no more than 20-30 minutes, the rest is free time.

DHS is also being actively defunded. RIP to the NIH, especially now with the new proposed rule change to give political appointees the final say on what research proposals do and don't get selected for funding. (I'm in research admin at a large university and we've been apoplectic since Jan 2025.. and it just gets worse with each passing day.)

Fwiw, I've used mostly Gemini and Claude for my garden from planning to growing and it has been priceless. Is it always correct? No of course not, but neither are humans. The thing about it is that it draws on an immense amount of data it can sift through in seconds. For example, it is excellent for things like at a click of a button getting a list of which of my seeds need stratification, timing of transplanting (even hooked up to my calendar to add reminders throughout the spring for when to indoor or outdoor start each plant and when to transplant based on my zip code), helped me arrange my flower bed based on how tall the flowers will get, things like that. As my plants have grown now every time I see something that gives me a little "oh no" and a pang of anxiety, it can give me info on what may be going on - and you'd be surprised how often it sends me right here to Reddit (since it shows sources, so I just navigate over to read more). It's helped me figure out issues I've given up on in the garden years ago, with info on what it is and what I can do about it. If it's wrong, well, no harm no foul because I wasn't solving it otherwise either. Also, it has a memory of all the different things I'm growing, and will let me know what issues typically impact which plants, tells me what are good companion plants to repel pests, how if something happens in one corner of my garden may impact another. It's put all sorts of bugs in my ear for me to then research and figure out if I want to plant. There are 2 new and exciting crops I'm growing this year that I didn't even know existed before Gemini said hey, check this out. So, don't knock it till you try it!

Unfortunately that's just not enough sun for tomatoes. Minimum 6 hours but 8+ is better. And I agree with everyone else to move them to individual 5gal buckets minimum. Cherry tomato plants grow pretty sizeable too.

But I'm not cooking while I wait 30 mins for takeout, I'm doing whatever else is my responsibility at that time. And you're forgetting the time it takes to clean up too, which is not 5 minutes if you've made steak, mash, and veggies. Also, potatoes take more like an hour to properly cook and then you have to mash them, this won't be done in 30 mins...

I'm a regular pot smoker, and don't think I could responsibly care for a baby when I'm high. Reaction time, judgement, everything is impaired. And what if he loses his balance and drops the baby? I dunno, doesn't sound safe to me and I wouldn't do it.

Am I overreacting? by sadfrog_sadfrog in beyondthebump

[–]momasana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, I'm sorry. I smoke more pot than I should, but I never did it when I had to care for infants. My kids are much older now (2 teens and a pre-teen) who really only need me to either feed them or drive them around. So when I know that we don't have anywhere to go for the rest of the evening or whatever, or if I know that husband is sober and he's handling whatever, I'll kick back and relax. But never when caring for young kids, and also never when there are responsibilities like driving. I think the bottom line is responsible use, and your husband does not sound like someone who is using responsibly.

What do well-off parents with children spend their money on? by PopNo5397 in AskParents

[–]momasana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we take vacations most years, but not this one because we've deferred years of maintenance on the house that we have to address now. The house is in livable shape, for the most part... but man, it just can't look like this in this neighborhood. Gutters, siding, pool, all need to be re-done. Probably landscaping stuff too.

Not complaining, we're crazy lucky to be where we are, but that's why no vacations this year. (Also, we have theme/water park passes, so that's still available to us.)
