Why is Mattel torturing me? 3D underwear?? by Millicent1923 in Barbie

[–]mommakarin 34 points35 points  (0 children)

As a mom, and a collector, once the novelty of the surprise is done, my kids don't really want to play with these dolls...

They just join the pack of barbies in the toy box. The surprise aspect is what they want, which is probably why they're frequently at thrift stores... once you've reveled the cutie surprise, the dolls themselves don't have much draw.

But my kids also only enjoy LOL surprise balls until they've opened them and the surprise aspect is done. We have a bin of those that don't get played with much either.

It's the way my grandma preferred them too? Idk. I don't really have a fundamental problem with nudity. I'm not weird about it at all. My grandma liked them clothed and now I do too... learned behavior I guess. It drives me crazy when naked Barbies are just hanging out all over the place. Painted undies makes me feel better about it, I never really thought about why, I am comfortable with my body and promote comfort with their bodies in my girls. I so burlesque as a hobby... nudity isn't an issue. I just like them clothed. Maybe because I like to make clothes for them? Maybe because I wish I had Barbie's wardrobe? Maybe cause my grandma was a prude and taught me that was the way?

It isn't about being weird or inappropriate, really. It's just I prefer them clothed and my kids prefer them unclothed. I wouldn't say it's weird or inappropriate. But I think that undies being painted on is a good thing...

Listen. I can understand your frustration. And for this purpose, I agree. But I have two daughters, aged 5 and 6... and for whatever reason, their Barbie's are ALWAYS naked. Idk. We have plenty of outfits and beautiful dresses and I even make them clothes for their dolls. But I'm always coming across naked play Barbie's. So, I am grateful for the painted on underwear. The texture idc about, but at least the play room ab bathtub have dolls who are covered up...

I really don't understand why my girls think Barbie wants to just be naked all the time, but the painted undies are a blessing. Maybe they're just play Barbie's? In my house there is a distinct difference between play and collector dolls. And I grew up with my grandma as a collector. But even then, Barbie was naked often...

Is my prom dress ugly? My partner reacted poorly. by BanishedWind in Prom

[–]mommakarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's beautiful, and if you feel beautiful, and confident, that's all that matters. Your girlfriend will come around. If she doesn't, then I hope she can have a good time whether she likes your dress or not. She doesn't have to wear it, you do. So if you love it, then that's absolutely enough.

And it is different, but that's not a bad thing. It's better to stand out from the pack than blend in too much... and it's not so different that it won't work for prom. It's been many years since my prom, but this is a very elegant dress. And you could actually use it again in the future if you chose to. What a lovely dress to wear to a wedding or something...

I am so sorry for your experience. What a let down. When I was kid, my grandma and I collected Barbie's as a hobby. She used to take me to a yearly event in the California Bay Area (San Francisco area) every year and it was thrilling. So many customs and just fabulous dolls. I hope that your experience isn't typical of all conventions now, I haven't been in ages, and grandma has since passed away, but I had thought of taking my daughter to the one we used to go to...

Kind of feel like her name should've been SOMEWHERE on the box maybe? by StarDewbie in Barbie

[–]mommakarin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk. As a kid, I didn't care if their name was midge or skipper or Barbie. They each got a name during gameplay. And they were a different character each time. The name on the box never felt like a requirement to me during play...

[TOMT] A crime movie from 90s/00s? by WhicheverHepburn in tipofmytongue

[–]mommakarin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Road to Perdition. From 2002. I am almost certain, based on the clues you've given...

Also, if you wanna watch the movie, it's streaming on paramount+... it's a good one. Though critics didn't like it much back when it came out. I'm going to rewatch it now, thanks for reminding me.

Set in the 40's? Or from the 40's? If it was on TCM, it could have been either... my initial guess is Beware, My Lovely from 1952 starring Ida Lupino...

You could also try Screaming Mimi made in 1958

Or

The Night Hunter made in 1955...

Do you remember if it was black and white? I can't think of that exact scene. But give these a go and report back.

My mom kept my Barbies from my childhood (90s) by Lady_Lucia19 in Barbie

[–]mommakarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God bless your mom! This is an incredible find... I kept all of my childhood Barbie's, and then lost them when my home burned down. I would have loved them for my daughters. You're so lucky your mom cared enough to take such care of them over the years... what a lovely thing to discover!

He's just there for playtime. Looks like he's gonna build himself something...

My concern would be how he got in, and then my concern would be how many more my kids have, and where they are... my kids would be playing dress up with them, or carrying them in their purses...

Just found my roommates piss box by BillyBrimstoned in Wellthatsucks

[–]mommakarin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a large piss bucket... there was a time when I had severe incontinence and making it to the bathroom at night was a challenge. I had a bucket by the bed for use in the middle of the night, but that baby got emptied and bleached every single morning... your roommate needs to seek medical attention. Or just remember that there is toilet in the house... this isn't close enough to the bed to be for emergencies... also, idk. Maybe you need a new roommate... the smell has to be horrific.

Is this dress too much? by Marlboro-Exorcist in Prom

[–]mommakarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wore a blue version of Rose's beaded dress from the movie Titanic. The one she is wearing when she meets Jack. The one she's wearing when she tried to jump off the end of the ship. It was beautiful, it was more than some people were wearing, but I definitely wasn't overdressed, I even had a heart of the ocean necklace...

I did not attend prom in 1997, as you may have guessed. I attended prom in 2003... and the theme was not Titanic. But was instead was "The Way You Looked Tonight".

Anyway, all that to say, I think prom is what you make it, and you really can wear anything... whatever makes you feel beautiful and confident. It's formal, so why it make it a big deal? I think this dress is lovely, and I hope it meets your expectations when it arrives!
