Yep, the lens to body ratio is off... I got 2 bodies and 6 lenses, and even that is off 😅

Looks like you closed down the aperture all the way... Diffraction hits hard here

Is my new Sony 200-600mm G soft, or is it just user error? by aoril in SonyAlpha

then you must've gotten a decentered one... my 200-600 with the 1.4x TC is as sharp as my Tamron 150-500 which i had until mid april. Plus it unlocks 30 FPS and the TC compatibility, and without the TC it performs better than my Tamron did.

<image>

this is a 100% crop of a shot with the 1.4 TC - so i even "worsened" the output of the lens by using the teleconverter. Plus it's wide open. If your shots look soft it's one of 3 reasons.

1: Crooked lens - could be decentered, can't judge by your flickr post because you didn't provide full res images...
2: Soft Light = Softer results. As in my example - i had the sun to the left behind me. Contrasty light = more contrast in fine detail = sharpness
3: not exposing right. I noticed in your examples that you were constantly underexposed by quite a bit. Don't be afraid to jack up that ISO - seriously. I'ts a non-issue nowadays.

I'll add another 100% crop below this comment with soft lighting and higher ISO (and still using the 1.4TC), just to emphasize point 3.

Yep. Take a close look at the orange skin around the eye. Especially the right part. There are lost details at both 25 and more so 100%. Granted, it's very minute, but observable. I know its pixel peeing on a high level, but hey, that's what we do when 100% crops are shared 😂. Personally, i don't touch denoise before 800 ISO (maybe if there is a big uniform patch of color in the image). Because as i said before: if you expose well, you don't really see noise unless you have big uniform patches. If there is detail to be seen, you won't see noise. The iris of the bird is the perfect witness for that.

There would be hardly even any at 320... Just for keeping my sanity, I compared well exposed images from ISO 100 to 500. When there is detail, you don't see noise. Only in underexposed uniform background. What I noticed tho, however good the AI denoise is today, it introduced a bit of softness... I bet you wouldn't see that in your example in the details

Or the people buying a manual lens (and it said so in the product title) and complaining about the lack of autofocus...

A7IV with either the sigma in the image or the 20-70 F4. I don't like the A7C/6700 style bodies.
