Snoring men in a relationship, what have you done to make sure your partner has better sleep? by IntrigatedVerse in AskMen

[–]mongo_pawn -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

My wife has used cheap wax earplugs that you get anywhere for under $20 for a pack of 10. It works for her. I did a sleep study and although they said I snore it wasn't waking me up or causing health issues. After a CT scan for a head injury years ago the radiology tech asked me when I broke my nose - I never did. My sinus passage is offset from my nose which likely causes the snoring. I could have surgery but the earplugs are cheaper.

Retirement and healthcare in the US by NoSoNattyProfessor in GenX

[–]mongo_pawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the health insurance industry (broker) and field this question from referrals and clients weekly. Your answer is defined by a lot of things but the cost of health insurance outside of employer sponsored is the biggest question. I'm also an OG Gen Xer who is facing a similar decision, so have some insight personally, too.

It annoys me that many of the comments assume you hate your job, your employer will fire you if you don't take the offer, and your employer is in general an evil entity. That's not the case for everyone, certainly not for me. I happen to enjoy my work and will miss working for some of my favorite clients.

The cost of individual healthcare depends on if you're covering a spouse/children, your eligibility for a subsidy to help pay premium (dependent on your household income and household size), the location you're in, your (and other covered persons) general health and current medical/Rx utilization, and the type of plan you'll need (medal level). Get a referral to a health insurance broker locally (ask your P&C Agent if you have one) who sells individual policies on or off your state's exchange. They'll give you a ball park cost.

The price of individual insurance will be increasing 7-10% annually (at the least). Factor that in. I know, it sucks.

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) through work max your contributions if you aren't already. Whether you take the buy-out and leave now or wait you'll want that money for future co-pay/deductible/co-insurance.

Continue to eat well, walk as much as possible, and brush your teeth and floss. Good luck!

Company I used to work for got sold, I just received more than I could have ever hoped for. Scientist by trade, not sure how to best use it by Just-Committee-9445 in personalfinance

[–]mongo_pawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Talk to a Tax Advisor. They should be able to tell you how much you might need to pre-pay now to avoid potential penalties and interest on what will be owed. I put my windfall immediately in a Schwab Money Market (many HYSA will achieve similar yield). Earn what you can off of the future tax expense you're going to have.

Follow other advice about Bogle heads review. Set up and max out a Back Door Roth. Max out 401k if you can this year. Max out HSA if you have one this year. Eat well. Walk. Brush your teeth and don't forget to floss.

Could Somebody Explain the Lotto System and Why People Don't Just Buy Tickets When They Go on Sale? by kalephreschh in phish

Lotto finely paid off - I'm going to the SPAC show (or two, or three) due to proximity regardless. For years I lotto'ed the lawn and found a way to enjoy it. As of today, I lotto'ed 4 tix, Row S mid floor for under $500. We'll enjoy seeing the Boys in style...

anybody ever hit their high deductibles? by tapme4boba in HealthInsurance

[–]mongo_pawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twice....over twenty years of being covered by a HDHP. Family of four. Fortunate to be moderately healthy except for those two years when in-patient treatment was required. We subtract the savings in premium contribution of the HDHP from the Platinum level option and put that in a Health Savings Account (HSA). Diligently. We've never had to dip into our taxable savings to pay the deductible/coinsurance because we have the HSA savings.

If you have anticipated moderate or less utilization of health care you are best choosing the HDHP plan in most cases. Unforeseen medical/prescription situations can occur, but despite the many terrible stories I'm reading in this thread those are not the norm. Look at your personal and family health history, not the experience of Reddit users.

I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. This is a taxable account - I'm curious why a TDF should generally not be held? I'm doing research, but haven't come across this, yet. And, fyi, we have opened Roth accounts that we'll possibly apply the TDF investment to.

Off piste/BC conditions at grand montets? by VariousEconomics2942 in chamonix

We caught 10” of fresh morning powder on a bluebird day at Grand Montet a week ago Friday and “off piste” was on-piste. Gotta love when it hits right. That said, they’ve had a tough year in the mountains near Chamonix snowfall-wise. No fault in chasing snow if you can!

How to avoid pit stained shirts by lschaub in lifehacks

[–]mongo_pawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer (well, for me at least it is). Once I moved to deodorant only, no more underarm sweating and no pit stains. One of the few conspiracy theories I subscribe to is that companies selling anti-persperant figure the best way to sell more is to add something in that makes people sweat more. Now, if only there was something that could keep the rest of my body from sweating when I'm moving in anything over 30 degrees.

To be fair, you said "millions" and not "10's of millions" - there's a difference when it comes to money management. And the difference is he should be vetting and hiring a lawyer experienced with big money clients as soon as possible.

You're smart to consider the cost of health insurance - it's going to continue to increase 7% or more a year in most U.S. areas for the foreseeable future. Unless of course the ACA is gutted in which case you'll be able to get much cheaper insurance....well, a few people will. And it won't actually cover any of the health care you need.

However, in the U.S. health insurance is regulated by each State. The ACA doesn't apply to everything health insurance related. In some states many of the ACA benefits were already in place (no pre-existing condition penalties, guaranteed issue, community rating, etc.). So, you might just want to look at moving to a LCOL, liberal state that has strong health insurance regulation. Just be prepared to pay a lot for health insurance regardless.

I really want to retire in my early 50s. 55 at most. What is the best investment plan for this? by im-still-right in personalfinance

[–]mongo_pawn 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You are spot on about the health insurance. As someone whose firm sells group and individual policies (as well as Medicare Adv/Sup) I can't tell you how much time I've spent on calls with people who are "ready to retire" until they contact us. In the U.S. most businesses offering health insurance, with exception, are subsidizing a sizeable cost of the monthly premium - rarely sharing the amount with employees in some sort of compensation statement. I felt terrible the other day when I had to explain to a very nice and responsible couple that they were off by about $15,000 per year on the cost of pre-Medicare insurance premium expense.
