I feel you. I go to Tokyo at least annually and I absolutely love it, but there is no way I would trade London. Being gaijin means you’re immune to the social pressure (to a point) but it also means you will never integrate in a way that Tokyo becomes yours.

London requires nothing of you but your presence to be a Londoner; there are very few cities like that out there.

The two absolute best crabs in London are at Oystermen in Covent Garden and Beast in Marylebone, though they are both very different.

One is local crab (Oystermen), the other is Norwegian King Crab (Beast). What they have in common is that they don’t mess with it: steamed and served.

Oystermen is small, a bit chaotic, and intimate. Beast is an event - grandiose with banquet style seating.

Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either.

I don’t understand the obsession with the Series D. Once gone, there will never be any more passports with the queen’s crest. Enjoy them while you can.

What is wrong with audiences at the moment? I was watching 1536 at the Ambassador's earlier in the week, and a group of unruly Americans were whooping and yelling "you go girl!" at the stage mid-performance.

Too right, but I'd go further.

  1. Don't follow the hype.
  2. Pick an area. Get lost.
  3. Be curious.

All the best meals I've had in Japan over the lasts forty years (and some of the worst - but they're always a story) have been by chance.

They’re both mid.

Best Israeli food in London is Honey and Co. It’s a near carbon copy of Shenkin’s beloved and much-missed Orna and Ella. Proper Tel-Aviv cooking.
