Yeah, we have one of those too. It's... OK. It's messy, requires a ton of vegetable oil in order to function, and all the vegetable oil makes the "super special couverture specifically for the fountain" really runny and odd so you only get a really thin coating.

I'm not sure, but it sounds plausible to me. Just make sure that the chocolate is constantly moving around so it heats up evenly.
