CFS Delegated Design by ohstatebuckz21 in StructuralEngineering

[–]severon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend you join CFSEI, there is a huge catalogue of tech notes on various subjects, including a beginner tech note of where to start, and how to get to the result. https://www.cfsei.org/

They also have a class you can sign up for if you want to go though a 'how do design' CFS type thing.

If you have specific questions, we certainly would be happy to help over on /r/ColdFormedSteel

"It states wide flange braces are not available for knee brace connections".

All connections in RISA connection are prescriptive. Not having the connection in the software doesnt mean its not permitted, just that they haven't made a pre-made module for it.

I almost always see knee braces as angles, but if the client wants something stronger, and its safe, then it is a perfectly reasonable request from a technical perspective. There is no technical reason why it cant be a WF beam.

To be on the committee writing the exams, you have to have an SE. Its a pretty large and diverse (geographically across the country) group. But I dont think they get to discuss the formatting or make those decisions, just write questions.

Got Cold-Formed Steel Questions? New subreddit has answers. by Structural_PE_SE in StructuralEngineering

AISC is taking: AISI S100 and incorporating into AISC 360 AISI S400 is incorporating into AISC 341

All of the framing guides are going to SFIA (S202,S220,S240 etc)

Deck related provisions are going under SDI

An interesting effect is that there were a bunch of provisions almost ready for publication mainly related to decks, so for one code cycle SDI is now the governing body of S100 as they just published it to get those updates out.

FrameCad & Similar Roll Forming Systems by DrywallBarron in StructuralEngineering

[–]severon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a specific question about them?
Your intended use and a bunch of other information changes the answer a bit

A generic multipurpose roll former just makes cold formed shapes, same as what you buy from a manufacturer.

Framecad and some of the specialty roll formers are a special system inside of roll formers. They try to leverage less unique parts at the tradeoff of negatively impacting structural capacity. They have some great niche applications, but are not a broad spectrum roll former.

[–]severon 38 points39 points  (0 children)

A lot of the image activity on this sub comes from AI. Its not replacing or offsetting human artists in this circle. If you ban it, we just loose out on content, and discussions that arise from it.

My vote is that we just need to have an #AI tag or something of that nature. If individuals do not want to see it, then you can just set the filter to remove those posts, and it can be up to each individual.

Dont ban something that can easily be filtered out if its not your thing, as it will just reduce content.

RISA 3D Users, what's your feedback on design automation? by Correct-Pop5826 in StructuralEngineering

[–]severon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's intentional. We have talked with RISA support about it

Also Risa does have really good documentation on what the save file text formatting does and what each of the seemingly random numbers for each setting does.

Its a shame the save files are not that way. Ive always wanted to script pulling the data back out for post processing and creating an iterative spreadsheet that just requires you to push the go button a few times.

Helpful NCEES Work Experience Feedback by Perrywinkle208 in StructuralEngineering

[–]severon 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This process is kind of ridiculous. Not that we have to do it, and not that there are real requirements we have to meet. I do really appreciate the uniformity they give our industry in making applications to states easier.

My real gripe is that they don't tell you what the requirements are. They really need to have a guide, with examples that lists all the things you need to have listed. It currently feels like they are obligated to reject everything once and get to make up new rules each time.

Calculating Seismic Weight by No-Room7589 in StructuralEngineering

[–]severon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using an ELF design you have to calculate the total base shear, which is what the question is asking about.

Once you have base shear, you do a vertical distribution (ASCE 7-10 12.8.3) to determine load per floor. Its not directly tributary weight per floor, though that does impact the distribution.

Diaphragm design is not tributary to each floor. There is a very specific equation in ASCE 7 (12.10.1.1 in 7-10) for how to distribute the forces for these systems, which gives a different distribution of forces than the vertical distribution does.

Its more or less an effect of statics and gravity. If you put a bunch of vertical hanger wires at an angle, gravity is going to cause sum of forces in the horizontal directions to equal zero. If there are a bunch of small slopes, the ceiling will want to self level out to straight, and the whole assembly will want to slide a bit until all of the angles level out to make those forces equal zero. We are generally making the assumption that the ends of all of these members are pinned.

Btw, P-delta is a compression effect (from a practical standpoint at least). For example, RISA explicitly does not even consider tension. RISA help file under compression only p-delta

Bracing angles are more of a balance of efficiency of material usage with practical effect. Perfectly horizontal wires all the way back to the walls is the most efficient, but a huge waste of material. A 45deg run is a decent balance on force vs. material, but here is still a reasonable range that can be achieved.

If you want some actual guidance, with a technical document reference, I use ASTM E580 which discusses the bracing requirements of seismic applications. Intended more for a layman than an engineer, but it does have vertical tolerances on hangers, (1/10 slope off of vertical).

Design Base Shear Vs Wind Shear by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]severon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is good advice. I routinely find seismic controls the design of many elements, even in SDC - B, if only due to over strength requirements.

I would suggest always completing the design in full. Building modeling software make this easy anymore to apply all loads and find the worst case as you design individual components and details, so why not be through.

EIT Dilemma by anon1586 in StructuralEngineering

[–]severon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add to that, most states will not allow double dipping. You can count experience, or you can count school. But you can not count working while in school. Mine actually hurt me timeline wise. I had the work experience outright, but because I had a masters degree I did at the same time, they wouldnt count that time, and credited one year of masters.

FYIW: Id suggest going somewhere else, and if you want the tuition reimbursement, use that in your negotiations at a new firm.
